Audi MedCup – Barcellona – Emozioni a non finire nell’ultima prova della Regata Camper – Trofeo Conde de Godò – Barcellona, che fino ai cento metri finali ha lasciato tutti con il fiato sospeso. Merito, di un Paul Cayard che prima va a cacciarsi nei guai non coprendo i Kiwi, e poi mette a segno una rimonta storica che ha portato il suo Artemis dal quinto dell’ultima boa, fino al secondo posto al traguardo dietro a uno strabiliante Bribon. Il tutto, sorpassando nei metri finali Team Origin (poi autopenalizzato in nona posizione per aver toccato la boa), Emirates Team New Zealand (terzo) e Luna Rossa (quinta al traguardo dietro a Matador).

Kiwi a secco per la seconda volta consecutiva
Il secondo posto di Artemis è dunque sufficiente per terminare la tappa al primo posto, forte di 33 punti e di ben due regate vinte (entrambe ieri). Nulla da fare dunque per Emirates Team New Zealand: i kiwi attaccano, sperano fino all’ultimo, ma poi, anche a causa di un sacchetto sul timone, i vedono costretti a cedere alle tattiche del loro connazionale Cameron Appleton, e dell’abilità del timoniere Paul Cayard. Il team di Dean Barker, dopo il quarto posto di Marsiglia, qui a Barcellona deve dunque accontentarsi soltanto del secondo posto in classifica, con 35 punti.

Applausi per Bribón
Ma i complimenti più grandi, vanno oggi a Bribón, con l’imbarcazione spagnola, la più vecchia del Circuito con ben quattro stagioni alle spalle, capace di vincere la sua prima regata della stagione regalando una grande gioia ai propri tifosi. L’equipaggio spagnolo termina così il Trofeo nelle acque di casa in quarta posizione, a 58 punti. Quattordici in più di Quantum Racing (44 punti), terzo in classifica generale (sesto oggi) e comunque autore di una discreta tappa.

Inglesi fermi a centro classifica
Dopo aver fatto quasi tutta la tappa a braccetto, i due team britannici di Cristabella e Team Origin 1851 concludono la loro personale sfida per il quinto posto, con Cristabella (62 punti) che chiude oggi in ottava posizione beffando così i connazionali (63 punti), noni dopo aver buttato via il terzo posto per aver toccato la boa. Settima piazza invece per Matador (67 punti), quarto in regata.

Nona Luna Rossa
Chiudono infine la classifica Bigamist 7 (70 punti), Luna Rossa e Synergy, rispettivamente nona e decima con 73 punti, e Audi A1 All4One, ultimo con 84 punti. E proprio il team franco-tedesco, sempre sul podio nelle due precedenti tappe, è la delusione maggiore di questa Regata Camper – Trofeo Conde de Godò – Barcellona.

Nel Circuito, Kiwi sempre in vetta
Nonostante il secondo posto di Barcellona, Emirates Team New Zealand mantiene però saldamente la testa della classifica del Circuito Audi MedCup 2010, con 97.5 punti. Staccati di ben 28.5 punti e mezzo, infatti, gli americani di Quantum Racing, fermi a quota 126. Con la vittoria odierna, sale invece dall’ottavo al terzo posto overall Artemis, che con 143 punti supera Matador, quinto con 154. Sale in quarta piazza Team Origin 1851 (153,5 punti), mentre Audi A1 All4One (165 punti) scivola dal secondo al sesto posto in classifica. Decima posizione per l’italiana Luna Rossa (195 punti).

Paolo Cian pigliatutto nella GP42 Series
Splendida settimana per lo skipper italiano a bordo di Madrid-Caser Seguros, con il team che, vincendo oggi, è riuscito ad aggiudicarsi sia la Regata Camper – Trofeo Conde de Godò – Barcellona (con ben 6 vittorie su 9 prove), sia il primo posto nell’Audi MedCup. A nulla hanno dunque portato gli sforzi dei diretti avversari, con Islas Canarias Puerto Calero costretto ad accontentarsi della seconda posizione. Staccati, con 19 punti, di cinque lunghezze da Madrid-Caser Seguros, fermo a quota 14. Terza posizione per Iberdrola (26 punti), davanti a Peninsula Petroleum (37 punti) e Airiessential, ultimo a 39 punti. Nel Circuito Audi MedCup 2010, come detto, prima posizione dunque per Madrid-Caser Seguros, a pari punti (50) con Islas Canarias – Puerto Calero, ma in vantaggio in virtù del maggior numero di vittorie. Terzo Iberdrola, a 61 punti, davanti a Airisessential (91 punti) e Peninsula Petroleum (101 punti).

Appuntamento a Cartagena
Dopo l’emozionante tappa di Barcellona, il Circuito Audi MedCup andrà ora in vacanza per tornare in scena a Cartagena, dal 24 al 29 agosto, per il Trofeo Caja Mediterráneo Regione di Murcia.

AUDI MEDCUP, RIPPING IT UP IN BARCELONA. ARTEMIS AND MADRID-CASER SEGUROS WIN
[Audi MedCup, Press Release] - Barcellona – Paul Cayard and the crew of Torbjorn Tornqvist’s Artemis won the Camper Regatta – Conde de Godó Trophy – Barcelona TP52 Series in considerable style, after a fantastic finale, coming from eighth at the first windward mark to finish second behind Bribón on the finish line of the last race, to clinch the Swedish flagged team’s first MedCup Circuit regatta win since 2007.

With Madrid-Caser Seguros winning the GP42 Series, three different boats have won each of the three regattas this season so far in both TP52 and GP42 Series, confirming this is the most open Audi MedCup Circuit season ever.

Leading into the one and only race of today by a single point, the odds looked suddenly to be stacked against an Artemis regatta win when they picked the wrong side of the first beat and rounded the top mark in eighth place, with their main rivals Emirates Team New Zealand in second.

But two electrifying downwind legs, twice gybing away for clear air and flatter water, diverging from the line taken by the pack, saw Cayard and crew gaining three places on each run to secure Barcelona’s top trophy.

Emirates Team New Zealand at one stage seemed to be hanging on, just on target for their second regatta win of the season, with Luna Rossa between them and their rival Artemis representing the 1-point margin that they needed to win, but in the end the Kiwi champions could do nothing to control the firepower of Artemis downwind.

On the final run Cayard, tactician Cameron Appleton and the Artemis crew gained 44 seconds, to cross just 16 seconds behind José Cusí’s Bribón who finished their regatta with a flourish to clinch a creditable fourth overall in owner Cusí’s home city.
Artemis top the Camper Regatta – Conde de Godó Trophy – Barcelona TP52 fleet after a miserable Marseille, where they finished eighth overall. In Barcelona they have sailed with confidence and cohesion, bolting together all of the required components to win a testing 10 race series.

Third overall last season their overall win at the first of two Audi MedCup Circuit regattas in Spain this season, boosts Tornqvist’s team from sixth overall on the 2010 standings to third.

And, after Emirates Team New Zealand in Cascais, Quantum Racing in Marseille they become the third TP52 Series team to win an event this season, just as three different GP42 Series teams Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, Iberdrola and Madrid-Caser Seguros have had regatta victories.

Artemis last won a MedCup regatta in Hyeres, France in 2007 when Russell Coutts skippered the team to win the Circuit title. In that season five different boats won the five regattas.

Emirates Team New Zealand finish disappointed not to have won in Barcelona. They were hobbled for boat speed at times, citing a plastic bag that they caught around the rudder which left them lacking speed.

But the reigning title holders head to Cartagena for next month’s (August 24-29) fourth regatta of the 2010 season, the Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy having extended their overall lead by ten points at this regatta. They now lead Quantum Racing by 28.5 points.

GP42 summary
The last race in the GP42 Series saw the team that has dominated all week – Madrid-Caser Seguros – win their sixth race in the nine race series, nearly from start to finish.

A strong start by Iberdrola and Airisessential put them into contention all the way to the first mark rounding, but a big four-boat pile-up at the mark had Madrid-Caser breaking free, followed by Iberdrola, and the Italians doing a penalty turn at the mark.

And with the breeze building up to 17 knots, the two B&C-designed sisterships – Madrid-Caser Seguros and Islas Canarias Puerto Calero – were able to put their speed to advantage and finish 1-2 on the day, despite a last-second charge to the line by the Iberdrola green machine.

The two are also now tied on 50 points each in the overall series, with Madrid-Caser Seguros now taking the lead on the tie-break.

Next Audi MedCup Circuit event is the Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy, Cartagena, August 24-29.

Audi MedCup – Barcellona – Si è chiusa la terza tappa del circuito Audi MedCup a Barcellona ed Airisessential ha concluso al quinto posto della flotta GP42.

I problemi dell’unica barca italiana presente nel circuito sono sintetizzati nelle parole del team manager Cesare Bressan: “Se parliamo del risultato sportivo, beh, non possiamo essere soddisfatti. Il quinto posto di Barcellona ci amareggia ma il lato positivo riguarda il percorso che stiamo facendo per poter raggiungere, in regata, il livello degli altri. Oggi siamo consapevoli della negatività dei risultati ma anche di aver saputo affrontare e risolvere alcune problematiche. Abbiamo risolto le difficoltà in manovra ma poiché nel confronto diretto con le altre barche non riusciamo a reggere il livello dobbiamo concentrarci nel fare solo le cose semplici”.

Audi MedCup – Barcellona – La vittoria era l’unico risultato che mancava ad Artemis in questa settimana di regate a Barcellona, e oggi il team di Paul Cayard non ha tradito le attese, andando a vincere addirittura due gare (intervallate da un quinto posto). Un risultato che ha permesso ad Artemis, non solo di recuperare i quattro punti di svantaggio dai kiwi, ma di sorpassarli portandosi, con 31 punti, in testa alla Regata Camper – Trofeo Conde de Godó – Barcellona.

Kiwi e Quantum devono inseguire
Emirates Team New Zealand non riesce infatti ad ottenere più di due quinti e un terzo posto, trovandosi ora, con 32 punti, costretto ad inseguire gli svedesi. Il tutto, quando mancano soltanto tre prove al termine delle regate catalane. Non va meglio nemmeno a Quantum Racing, che porta a casa oggi due splendidi secondi, rovinati però dal nono posto in gara uno. Gli americani, con 38 punti, mantengono comunque la terza posizione, anche se domani dovranno dare davvero il meglio di sé per provare a puntare al primo posto.

Sempre a braccetto gli inglesi
Sono ancora a pari punti i due equipaggi inglesi del circuito Audi MedCup, Cristabella (4-6-6) e Team Origin (8-1-7). Se Cristabella sta sorprendendo con buone prestazioni, non altrettanto si può dire del team di Ben Ainslie, che nonostante la vittoria odierna continua a non convincere. Bene, invece, Bribon (10-7-4), che malgrado l’età si assesta, con 57 punti, al sesto posto in classifica, davanti a Synergy.

Che succede a Schuemann?
Chiudono la classifica Matador e Bigamist 7, Luna Rossa e Audi A1 All4One. Davvero inspiegabili le prestazioni del team franco-tedesco, che oggi chiude una volta nono, e addirittura due volte in ultima posizione.

Giochi riaperti nella GP42 Series
Giornata positiva per Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, che grazie a una vittoria e un terzo posto ottenuti oggi, si porta a 17 punti, accorciando le distanze con Madrid-Caser Seguros, oggi sottotono con un quarto e un secondo posto. Sono ora 13 i punti per il team di Paolo Cian, che domani dovrà cercare di salvaguardare il proprio vantaggio di quattro lunghezze nei confronti degli inseguitori. Ormai fuori dai giochi invece Iberdrola, primo e quarto oggi, Peninsula Petroleum e Airiessential.

Il programma per domani
Domani, con Artemis ed Emirates Team New Zealand divisi da un solo punto, ci si attendono i fuochi d’artificio nelle acque davanti a Barcellona. Il comitato di regata cercherà di dare il via alle ultime tre prove della TP52 Series, con diretta sul sito www.medcup.org a partire dalle ore 12.50. Due soltanto, invece, le prove in programma per la GP42 Series, con Madrid-Caser Seguros chiamato dare il massimo per mantenere il primato.

AUDI MEDCUP, BOUNCING BACK
[Audi MedCup Press Release] After an uncharacteristically disappointing regatta in Marseille last month, finishing eighth, Paul Cayard and the crew of Torbjorn Tornqvist’s Swedish flagged Artemis have bounced right back to head into the final day of the Camper Regatta – Conde de Godó Trophy – Barcelona with a slender lead of just one point over Emirates Team New Zealand, the current Audi MedCup Circuit champions.

In the GP42 Series a second place and a fourth was enough to keep Madrid –Caser Seguros four points clear of Islas Canarias Puerto Calero which won the second race today. Iberdrola won the first.

Two wins in today’s modest SE’ly breezes, added to a fifth in the middle race of three ensured that Artemis was the best scoring crew among the eleven TP52’s by some margin, underlining how consistency, boat speed and sharp sailing have replaced their Marseille malaise. Since a seventh in the first race of this regatta, Cayard and crew have never finished outside of the top five, a consistency which is only just about equalled by the Kiwi circuit leaders.

The stage is set for a fascinating Sunday showdown for the Camper regatta title here in Barcelona. Cayard came ashore relaxed and smiling – in contrast to the drained looking skipper he was in France – and was keen to emphasise that the greater satisfaction would come from knowing they can sustain this type of form, to maintain the highest competitive level, than running out regatta winners.

That would be the icing on the cake. Sharper starting and boatspeed at the two key differences he highlighted, but the Barcelona race tracks today proved difficult to read with split breezes either side of the course.

Having stayed relatively clear of trouble so far this regatta Emirates Team New Zealand might look to two small factors which contribute to their second place overall, rather than leading or sharing the lead. In the second race they gybe-set at the final windward mark rather than stay with their main rivals Quantum Racing, which cost them one place. Then in the third race of the day they became involved pre-start with Matador which meant they ended up with too little room and opportunity to break clear off the start line.

The Kiwis 5-3-5 for the day leaves them six points clear of Quantum Racing who started with a ninth after they were one of three boats recalled in the first race, and then they stayed strong with a pair of second places.

Three races are planned for the final day of racing on this first visit of the Audi MedCup Circuit to the Catalan capital city, but with a time limit of 15.30, after which no start sequence can begin, it is a lofty target, while the GP42’s are scheduled for two races to complete their regatta.

GP42 Series: closing the gap
Race 1 saw Iberdrola take advantage of the early right shift by starting at the committee boat, tacking, taking an early lead and never looking back. The 9-12 knot conditions were ideally suited to this team of alumnists from the Desafio Espanol AC team, led by skipper Laureano Wizner. Series leader Madrid-Caser Seguros led by helmsman Paolo Cian got buried into the remainder of the pack to score her worst score (4th) at this stage, while Peninsula Petroleum slid into the runner-up slot for their best finish to date.

In Race 2, Madrid-Caser Seguros had to settle for yet another second, as her series arch-rival, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero led by skipper Jose Maria Ponce, took advantage of a building 12-14 knot breeze to vault into an unchallenged lead. But Cian and team had to fight hard for this spot, and the fight got ugly: on a close cross on the second windward leg, Iberdrola couldn’t quite cross Airisessential, prompting Wizner and team to cede the battle and roll into a penalty turn, costing them two places as the Italian team happily took the third place slot in their best finish yet in this stage.

Audi MedCup – Barcellona – Novità di un certo rilievo sono emerse al termine di due riunioni che hanno visto coinvolti i responsabili della classe GP42 e il management di Audi MedCup. La più eclatante riguarda l’uscita dal circuito della classe che, a partire dalla stagione 2011, tornerà ad essere padrona del proprio destino. Si conclude così un matrimonio durato due stagioni, iniziato all’indomani del buon successo fatto registrare dalla GP42 Quebramar Cup, circuito datato 2008 riservato unicamente agli scafi appartenenti al sodalizio guidato dal direttore Paolo Massarini e dal presidente Javier Goizueta, armatore di Madrid Caser Seguros.

Un futuro fuori da MedCup, quindi, tutto da definire. Ma Massarini, che Zerogradinord.it ha intervistato proprio questa mattina a Barcellona, sta già lavorando sodo per definire un nuovo circuito di regate: “Il nostro obiettivo è quello di risvegliare l’interesse di tutti quegli armatori che sono in possesso di un GP42 ma che non sono attualmente impegnati nel circuito. Le cinque barche presenti qui a Barcellona non devono ingannare: sparsi per il mondo ci sono più di quindici scafi disegnati per rispondere alla box rule della classe. Le nostre idee per il 2011 sono chiare: vogliamo creare un circuito basato sulla presenza in alcuni main event mediterranei del calendario agonistico internazionale. Poi, per rendere le regate sempre più avvincenti e tenere le barche al passo con i tempi, abbiamo deciso di puntare sui bompressi, riducendo al contempo numero di uomini di equipaggio e numero delle vele”.

Per una classe che esce dai ranghi, una è pronta a firmare il suo ingresso sotto le insegne Audi MedCup. Si tratta del Soto 40, un monotipo che secondo il management del circuito griffato Audi sarebbe in grado di raggiungere in brevissimo tempo le dieci unità. Certo, i costi – circa 300.000 Euro per uno scafo navigante – sono inferiori rispetto a quelli necessari per realizzare un GP42, ma è anche vero che al carbonio si contrappone la vetroresina e ai timonieri professionisti l’owner driver.

Audi MedCup – Barcellona – Due OCS, uno spinnaker rotto e tanta sfortuna hanno caratterizzato la giornata di Airisessential. Nella seconda regata odierna, prima l’OCS e poi la rottura dello spinnaker nonostante il secondo posto.

“Abbiamo commesso degli errori ma siamo stati anche sfortunati” esordisce il grinder Massimo Farina, gli fa eco Federico Buscaglia che spiega i due OCS : “In uno sono stati bravi quelli di Madrid ad indurci all’errore, nell’altro eravamo soli e dobbiamo solo riflettere sui nostri errori. Io sono convinto che domani ci rifaremo”.

Paolo Mangialardo non si spiega come è avvenuta la rottura dello spinnaker: “In strambata è esploso, probabilmente si era già rotto in issata o addirittura precedentemente, peccato perché non stavamo andando male”.

Il morale è buono nonostante le vicissitudini e la sfortuna che quest’oggi si è accanita sull’imbarcazione italiana: “I ragazzi devono stare tranquilli e non sentirsi responsabili– conclude il team manager Bressan – Le brutte giornate, purtroppo, capitano devono servire a crescere. In compenso questa sera valuteremo i nostri errori e soprattutto cercheremo di capire perché non riusciamo ad essere competitivi tra i 12 ed i 18 nodi”.

Audi MedCup – Barcellona – Che questa Regata Camper – Trofeo Conde de Godó – Barcellona fosse difficile da inquadrare, si era già capito da ieri, con risultati a sorpresa e molti team racchiusi, a fine giornata, in pochissimi punti. Oggi però le cose non si sono certamente semplificate, con il difficile campo di regata catalano che ha riservato molte sorprese nelle due regate odierne.

I Kiwi si riprendono la leadership
Dopo la piccola defaillance francese, Emirates Team New Zealand sale in cattedra oggi portando a casa un primo, un secondo e un terzo posto, che significano, a 19 punti, leadership momentanea della Regata Camper – Trofeo Conde de Godó – Barcellona. Per il team di Dean Barker, è arrivata dunque anche la settima vittoria della stagione.

Il riscatto di Cayard
Era stato in ombra troppo a lungo il team Artemis, che qui a Barcellona, con Paul Cayard al timone, sta finalmente dimostrando di non aver perso lo smalto vincente dell’anno passato. Oggi, per il team svedese, sono arrivati un quinto posto (dopo recall iniziale), un secondo e un quarto: risultati sufficienti per portarsi, con 24 punti, in seconda posizione. Ora la vetta è lontana cinque lunghezze.

Testacoda Quantum, sorpresa Bribon
Le sorprese, dicevamo, non sono però mancate: Quantum Racing, fino a stamattina leader della classifica, abbandona la tanto celebrata continuità portando sì a casa ben due vittorie, rovinate però dall’ultimo posto in gara uno. Uno scivolone che spinge gli americani, con 25 punti, fino alla terza posizione nel trofeo. Lontano ben 11 punti dal team di Terry Hutchinson, invece, Bribon (7-5-11), che sembra però trarre ispirazione dall’aria di casa, con buone prestazioni e un quarto posto di tutto rispetto.

Deludono Ainslie, Schuemann, male anche italiani e argentini
Ancora prestazioni sottotono, invece, per Team Origin e Audi A1 All4One: i britannici (3-9-7 oggi) rimangono in sesta posizione a 38 punti, gli stessi di Cristabella (9-6-9). Il team franco-tedesco (4-8-6) non riesce invece a risalire oltre al nono posto, dietro anche a Synergy e Bigamist. Chiudono la classifica, un pò a sorpresa, Matador e Luna Rossa.

Sempre più in testa Paolo Cian
Non molla la testa della classifica Madrid-Caser Seguros, che anzi oggi va a vincere due regate su tre (con un secondo posto nell’altra prova), e incrementa il proprio vantaggio su Islas Canarias-Puerto Calero. Per loro, solo due secondi posti e la vittoria in gara due. Madrid-Caser Seguros si trova ora a 7 punti, sei in meno rispetto a Islas Canarias-Puerto Calero. Si allontana dalla vetta Iberdrola (3-3-4), che rimane terzo ma scivola a 18 punti. Dietro, chiudono e Peninsula Petroleum (5-4-3) e l’italiana Airisessential (4-5-5), entrambe a 26 punti.

Domani
Condizioni meteo permettendo, nella giornata di domani il comitato cercherà di dare il via a tre prove per la TP52 Series, e due per la GP42 Series.

AUDI MEDCUP, KIWIS ON TOP
[Audi MedCup Press Release] The reigning champions won the first race after leading round each mark, finished third in the second race and chased Quantum Racing across the finish line of the third contest for a second place.

After a morning postponement ashore waiting for sufficient breeze to build, the Garbi sea breeze offered two excellent races under clear skies and sunshine with up to 17 knots of breeze before the wind backed to the left for the third race of a long day on the water.

Quantum Racing and Emirates Team New Zealand were best placed from the scrabble off the pin end of the line for the final race, fighting to get left. They were rewarded with first and second places as the 2008 champions held off the current Audi MedCup TP52 title holding Kiwis down the final run.

Quantum Racing’s 11-1-1 ironically fits the description of the type of inconsistency which skipper-helm Terry Hutchison recently described them trying to avoid, dropping them to third overall in the event, behind Artemis. Paul Cayard steered the Swedish flagged boat to 5-2-4 for the day to hold second place one point ahead of Quantum Racing.

Almost perfect for Madrid – Caser Seguros

Pacing themselves nicely through a long day of delays, wind shifts and a slowly building breeze into the sunset, the Madrid – Caser Seguros team led by helmsman Paolo Cian has had another phenomenal day in the GP42 Series of the Audi MedCup on scores of 1-2-1 for the day. This has strengthened their lead to 6 points in the Camper Regatta – Conde de Godó Trophy – Barcelona over runner-up Islas Canarias Puerto Calero led by skipper Jose Maria Ponce, but their lead has increased by only a mere point over the Canarias team near the halfway mark in the overall series scores.

For tomorrow, three races for TP52 Series and two for GP42 Series are scheduled. First start of the day due at 1300hrs.
