Extreme Sailing Series – Londra – OC Events, titolare dei diritti e amministratrice di Extreme Sailing Series, il circuito di regate riservato ai catamarani Extreme 40 vinto quest’anno da Oman Sail Masirah di Pete Cumming al termine di un avvincente testa a testa con Gitana Extreme di Yann Guichard, ha annuciato che lo sponsor storico dell’evento, la iShares, ha deciso di non rinnovare il contratto per il prossimo anno. OC Events ha quindi comunicato che questa decisione non influirà sul normale svolgimento del circuito europeo 2010 e dell’appena varato circuito asiatico.

iShares aveva rinnovato il contratto di sponsorizzazione all’inizio di quest’anno, ma la nuova proprietà, la Black Rock Inc, ha deciso di avvalersi di una clausola per la rescissione anticipata dell’accordo.

Mark Turner, CEO di Oc Events, ha dichiarato: “Siamo ovviamente dispiaciuti, ma questo è il mondo delle sponsorizzazioni sportive. Il circuito comunque non si ferma e sin d’ora possiamo annunciare che nel 2010 saremo ancora in pista, assieme a tutti i partner che ci hanno seguito nel corso della stagione appena conclusa: fortunatamente le cose sono cambiate dal 2007, quando il title sponsor era l’unico a sovvenzionare l’evento. Questo non vuol dire che non cercheremo un nuovo main sponsor: la manifestazione è sana e apprezzata, non vi è quindi dubbio alcuno sulla rapida sottoscrizione di un nuovo contratto di sponsorizzazione”.

EXTREME SAILING SERIES EUROPE, NEW TITLE SPONSOR NEGOTIATION UNDERWAY
[Source OC Events] OC Events, owner and organiser of the award-winning Extreme Sailing Series, today announces its title sponsor, iShares, has decided to end its association with the European Circuit due to a change in company ownership. OC Events has confirmed this will not adversely affect the European Circuit for 2010 or the recently launched inaugural Extreme Sailing Series Asia 2009/10.

Mark Turner, CEO of OC Group that includes OC Events, commented: “Disappointing of course, but this is the world of commercial sponsorship: the Extreme Sailing Series concept will continue to be developed in Europe next year, along with all the stakeholders that have shared the success of 2009 – teams, sponsors and host venues. We have built up a benchmark sailing sports entertainment product, at the highest sporting level, providing excellent returns for all concerned. The European circuit has gathered fantastic momentum with ten top teams competing in close confines in Europe’s top venues and we plan to grow this a great deal further in 2010. Fortunately the event now has many stakeholders and many different revenue streams, so while we will obviously bring in a new title sponsor for 2010, things are very different to 2007 when the title sponsor represented nearly all the income. We have team sponsors, host venues and other event partners already contractually committed through as far as 2012. iShares Cup – Almeria – Ha dovuto aspettare sino alla conclusione dell’ultima prova, ma alla fine Oman Sail Masirah ha festeggiato il successo nell’iShares Cup 2009. L’affermazione dello scafo di Pete Cumming è giunta grazie a un margine di vantaggio su Gitana Extreme di appena 3 punti: quasi un’enormità se si considera che i primi tre equipaggi erano giunti all’appuntamento decisivo radunati in 2 sole lunghezze. A completare il podio della manifestazione, andata in scena nonostante l’assenza degli impetuosi venti che solitamente soffiano dalle parti di Almeria, eletta a teatro del confronto finale, è stato proprio il terzo di questi, Oman Sail Renaissance.

Portato tra le boe dell’evento da Loick Peyron, Renaissance si è però dovuto accontentare del quarto posto in occasione della tappa spagnola. A cavarsi la soddisfazione del terzo posto, infatti, è stato Groupama Extreme.

OMAN SAIL MASIRAH OVERALL ISHARES CUP CHAMPIONS 2009
[iShares Cup Press Release] Oman Sail Masirah has won the iShares Cup 2009, but it came down to the last leg of the last race on the last day of the last regatta at the iShares Cup Almeria in Spain, with Gitana Extreme – LCF Rothschild pushing Oman Sail Masirah right to the very last minute with a superb final performance.

Almeria’s usually strong winds never materialized, with light winds adding to the nerves of the 10 teams challenging for the Andulician final event of this benchmark season for the Extreme 40 Sailing Series.

Tens of thousands of spectators, the biggest stadium audience of the year, packed the port of Almeria to witness the heart-stopping tension of the double points final race of the season. No hull flying today, heart stopping it still was!

iShares Cup – Amsterdam – Vento in crescendo in occasione dell’ultima giornata della tappa olandese dell’iShares Cup 2009. Tra i canali di Amsterdam, infatti, la brezza si è stesa nel corso del pomeriggio, garantendo condizioni ideali per lo svolgimento delle ultime 3 manche. Condizioni che non hanno comunque impedito di confermare il grande equilibrio vigente in seno alla flotta degli Extreme 40: nella terra dei tulipani si sono registrati 7 differenti vincitori di giornata e la classifica è rimasta incerta sino all’ultimo.

Alla fine, a sorridere è stato l’equipaggio di Gitana Extreme di Yann Guichard, determinato nel difendere la propria leadership dagli attacchi di Oman Sail Renaissance, protagonista con il suo skipper Loick Peyron di un avvio particolarmente promettente, e Groupama, salito sul podio grazie alla vittoria ottenuta nell’ultima manche.

Oman Sail Masirah, leader della classifica assoluta, si è messo il primo infelice giorno di regate alle spalle – collisione con un avversario e barca seriamente danneggiata – e ha chiuso al quinto posto, confermandosi titolare della prima piazza overall, seppur a pari punti con Gitana Extreme e con una sola lunghezza di vantaggio sui compagni di squadra di Renaissance, in piena lotta per la vittoria assoluta nonostante non abbia al suo attivo vittorie di tappa.

Pete Cumming, skipper di Masirah, ha dichiarato: “Ad Almeria ci sarà davvero da divertirsi. Le condizioni meteo saranno molto più simili a quelle di Kiel e Cowes. Qui in Olanda abbiamo dato il massimo: la collisione di lunedì ci ha abbattuti non poco. Il team ha comunque reagito bene e siamo usciti a testa alta da questa tappa davvero impegnativa”.

L’evento conclusivo dell’iShares Cup 2009 è in programma ad Almeria tra il 10 e il 12 ottobre.

ISHARES CUP, GITANA EXTREME WIN ROUND 5 MASIRAH KEEP OVERALL LEAD
[iShares Cup Press Release] The best breeze of the day filled in for the final three races today producing some extreme racing – close calls, collisions, penalties and a nail-biting, final double-points race – entertaining the 10,000 strong crowd lining the IJ-Haven. There were seven different race winners in this penultimate event, that was more about tactics than boat handling. Gitana Extreme sailed brilliantly under pressure to win the penultimate iShares Cup Amsterdam event ahead of Oman Sail Renaissance, whilst Groupama fought back to win the final race and fill the last spot on the podium in third. iShares Cup – Amsterdam – Condizioni di vento leggero hanno caratterizzato il secondo giorno della penultima tappa dell’iShares Cup 2009, evento che si sta svolgendo sulle acque del canale IJ-Heaven di Amsterdam. Ad eccellere in una giornata che ha preteso moltissimo dai tattici è stato Gitana Extreme di Yann Guichard. Contro la velocità del team francese niente ha potuto Loick Peyron, leader della prima ora a bordo di Oman Sail Renaissance ma costretto a cedere la testa della classifica. Terzo, dopo aver sopravanzato Groupama raggiunto anche da iShares, Holmatro di Mitch Booth che a fine giornata ha dichiarato: “Le regate di oggi sono state molto tattiche, qualcosa di molto simile a una partita a scacchi”.

Il leader della classifica overall, Oman Sail Masirah, tornato in acqua a tempo di record dopo la collisione del primo giorno, ha fatto sua la sesta piazza in attesa di vedersi riconosciuta la riparazione da parte del Comitato di Regata.

Oggi, in condizioni meteo che dovrebbero ricordare molto quelle odierne, è in programma il gran finale.

ISHARES CUP, GITANA EXTREME EXCEL IN LIGHT AIR CONDITION
[iShares Cup Press Release] Light conditions dominated day 2, at times a bit of a lottery with 4 different winners in as many races today – not a day for brawn but brains. Overall series leaders Oman Sail Masirah made it back in the water in time but they wallow in sixth place on the event leaderboard after their redress. It was Gitana Extreme – Groupe LCF Rothschild who excelled in the light airs, although Loick Peyron tried everything to keep Oman Sail Renaissance in control, but ultimately had to concede the event lead, setting the stage for a French head to head going into the final day tomorrow. Mitch Booth took the home team of Holmatro into third place: “Not spectacular racing but more a game of chess…”. iShares Cup – Amsterdam – Grande azione e momenti di tensione oggi pomeriggio ad Amsterdam, dove a darsi battaglia sulle acque del canale IJ-Heaven sono stati gli Extreme 40 iscritti all’iShares Cup 2009. Il penultimo appuntamento del circuito, infatti, si è aperto con una violenta collisione tra il leader della classifica generale Oman Sail Masirah e BT. Ad avere la peggio è stato il primo, costretto al ritiro con una falla nello scafo dalla quale ha preso ad entrare parecchia acqua.

Considerato l’errore di BT, il Comitato di Regata ha subito accordato la riparazione a Masirah, ma è ovvio che non era questo l’inizio che Oman Sail si aspetteva. Una piccola consolazione per il team proveniente dal sultanato è arrivata quasi subito per merito di Renaissance, portato da Loick Peyron al vertice della classifica di tappa con un margine di soli 2 punti su Gitana Extreme di Yann Guichard. Una situazione delineatasi dopo 8 prove disputate in regime di vento leggero.

Quella di Masirah è stata una collisione che ha seguito di poche ore quella tra l’equipaggio di Ecover, costretto a passare tutta notte in banchina per rimediare al danno, e Renaissance.

Le regate valide per il penultimo appuntamento dell’iShares Cup riprenderanno domani.

ISHARES CUP, OVERALL SERIES LEADER HOLED ON DAY 1
[iShares Cup Press Release] Plenty of action on day 1 of the iShares Cup Amsterdam – the penultimate round of the six-stage series… The trickiest racecourse on the European circuit proved testing for the nine Extreme 40s but it was Oman Sail Masirah who ended up being the biggest casualty of the day. A collision with BT put a large hole in the port hull of Masirah and she started taking on water. Pete Cumming and his crew, leading the overall iShares Cup circuit at this stage, will get redress for the races they have missed but it was not the start the Oman team would have wished for going into this penultimate round. Some consolation is that their stablemate Renaissance complete day 1 at the top of the Amsterdam leaderboard with French skipper, Yann Guichard, onboard Gitana Extreme – Groupe LCF Rothschild only two points behind… Leggi tutto »

iShares Cup – Amsterdam – Si svolgerà in Olanda verso fine mese il penultimo anno dell’iShares Cup 2009. I 9 team ancora in gara si ritroveranno ad Amsterdam tra il 25 e il 27 settembre a bordo dei loro Extreme 40: sarà un evento emozionante, sia in virtù della classifica molto corta, sia in virtù della particolare disposizione del campo di regata, ricavato in uno dei tanti canali che regalano alla capitale olandese un fascino unico.

Una particolarità descritta anche da Gilles Chiorri, Direttore della Regata: “Si tratta del percorso più corto e impegnativo dell’intera stagione: le regate saranno assolutamente uniche. Inoltre, arrivando ad Amsterdam più tardi rispetto all’anno scorso, speriamo di poter contare su condizioni di vento fresco”.

L’appuntamento si aprirà il 24 settembre con lo svolgimento della practice race. Da venerdì a domenica, invece, si farà sul serio: il programma dell’evento prevede lo svolgimento di otto regate al giorno tutte commentate da Steve Ansell e dallo specialista della classe Wouter Samama.

Con due tappe ancora da disputare nessuno si può dire sicuro del proprio risultato. Oman Sail Masirah, vincitore delle ultime tre frazioni, ha un vantaggio di sole 3 lunghezze su Gitana Extreme e di 4 su Oman Sail Renaissance, a loro volta incalzati da Groupama 40.

Lo stesso Chiorri ha aggiunto: “Qui ad Amsterdam bisognerà guardare con attenzione Loick Peyron di Renaissance e Yan Guichard di Gitana: la loro classifica li spingerà a dare il tutto per tutto e lo spettacolo non potrà che goderne”.

iSHARES CUP, TEAMS PREPARE FOR EXTREME SAILING IN THE CITY
[iShares Cup Press Release] The penultimate round of the iShares Cup 2009 will be staged on its smallest, trickiest inner-city course when the fifth event of the 2009 Extreme 40 Sailing Series kicks off next week in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 25th-27th September. The six-event European series sees the iShares Cup return to the Dutch capital for the third consecutive year, with nine teams again racing the 40ft long catamarans on Amsterdam’s narrow waterways in the IJ-haven.

The ultra-tight racecourse is surrounded by high buildings which create sudden gusty winds, making the Amsterdam venue one of the trickiest on the circuit. But the iShares Cup is all about bringing racing right into the heart of the city, and the Dutch crowds will pack the shore walls to take in the Extreme 40 action, whilst some local residents can even watch from their apartment windows above the sailing area. iShares Cup – Kiel – Si è conclusa con un serrato testa a testa la quarta frazione dell’iShares Cup 2009, terminata oggi a Kiel. Oman Sail Masirah, leader della classifica generale e della graduatoria di tappa sin dalla giornata di apertura, ha corso il serio rischio di vedersi soffiare la vittoria dai compagni di squadra di Renaissance che, guidati da Loick Peyron, ha raggiunto l’avversario in vetta alla classifica, ma è stato battuto in virtù dei sei successi di giornata ottenuti dal team di Pete Cumming. A completare il podio, al termine di una serie protrattasi per 18 regate, è stato Groupama di Franck Cammas, seguito da Gitana Extreme, salito al quarto posto grazie al secondo ottenuto proprio in occasione della manche finale.

Peyron, skipper della barca battuta, ha commentato: “E’ stata una giornata dura, iniziata presto per noi che abbiamo deciso di lavorare sulla messa a punto. Dopo due prove ci siamo ritrovati al comando della graduatoria. Purtroppo, nel corso della manche decisiva, hanno smesso di andare gli strumenti elettronici e non abbiamo potuto dare il massimo. Sul traguardo non sapevamo come eravamo finiti e lo stesso, a causa di un arrivo in volata, valeva per la giuria, cui è toccato far di calcolo a lungo prima di confermare la vittoria di Masirah“.

Anche oggi a Kiel le condizioni hanno favorito lo svolgimento di una stupenda giornata di vela e regate. Uno show cui hanno assitito oltre 50.000 persone.

NAIL-BITING FISNISH TO ISHARES CUP KIEL
[iShares Cup Press Release] Oman Sail Masirah could not have produced a more nail-biting finish to round 4 of the iShares Cup at Kiel, Germany. Last off the start line, their Oman Sail stablemate Renaissance, the only ones who could snatch victory, got a strong start to be third at the first race mark with Masirah 9th. At the finish line Renaissance clinched first place, whilst Masirah came in 8th putting them on an equal 149 points! “It was way closer than we would have liked and we went across the line thinking we had blown it,” said Pete Cumming. But on count back Cumming’s team on Masirah came out on top, scoring 6 wins here in Kiel compared to Loick Peyron’s 5 first places. Completing the overall podium at the iShares Cup Kiel was Franck Cammas’ Groupama whilst Yann Guichard’s crew on Gitana Extreme, although finishing 2nd in the final race, are 4th overall. The racing was highly aggressive and, at times, completely nerve-racking. 50,000 spectators fully appreciating the intense racing over the 3-day event – even in the pouring rain! iShares Cup – Kiel – Quella che si è svolta oggi pomeriggio a Kiel, dov’è in corso di svolgimento la quarta frazione dell’iShares Cup 2009, è stata una giornata che ha ribadito il grande equilibrio vigente all’interno della classe Extreme 40. Dopo ieri, infatti, le condizioni di vento leggero hanno reso complicata la vita ai tattici e le 6 prove portate a termine si sono concluse con altrettanti vincitori.

Una situazione che ha aiutato Oman Sail Masirah, leader del circuito, a confermarsi al vertice della graduatoria della frazione con 17 punti di vantaggio sugli inseguitori, dopo oggi più ammassati che mai. Gitana Extreme, Groupama e Oman Sail Renaissance sono radunate in due sole lunghezze. Servirà quindi l’ultima giornata per definire la graduatoria finale della frazione.

ISHARES CUP, SIX RACES SIX DIFFERENT WINNERS
[iShares Cup Press Release] Day 2 of the iShares Cup Kiel event – 6 races were staged, each delivering a different winner – BT, Groupama, Oman Sail Masirah, Luna, Oman Sail Renaissance and Holmatro. No one team dominated in the tricky conditions, although Pete Cumming’s crew on Oman Sail Masirah did enough to stay at the top of the leaderboard with a 17-point lead going into the final day of racing, but they are certainly not invincible and round 4 of the iShares Cup is still wide open. A grand battle developed for second place today between three of the French skippers – Yann Guichard’s team Gitana Extreme raced a great final race which put them in second place overall, whereas Groupama’s 7th place relegated the team to 3rd place overall, and Loick Peyron on Oman Sail Renaissance is waiting in the wings in 4th – only 1 point separates each of these 3 teams. iShares Cup – Kiel – “E’ stata davveron dura la fuori” è il commento di David Carr, componente dell’equipaggio di Oman Sails, non appena rientrato dal primo giorno di regate valide per la tappa tedesca della iShares Cup 2009, circuito riservato agli Extreme 40. Il vento, particolarmente rafficato, ha messo a dura prova equipaggi e imbarcazioni, provocando danni e il ribaltamaneto di Ecover, risoltosi con il ricovero in ospedale di Bruno Dubois, rimasto ferito in modo non grave alla testa, e con la rottura dell’albero. Seria anche la collisione tra Oman Sails Renaissance di Loick Peyron e Wirsol Team Germany Kiel Sailing City, usciti dal sinistro con danni piuttosto gravi.

Una situazione complessa, che non ha spaventato Oman Sails Masirah. Il leader della classifica generale ha infatti chiuso la prima giornata al comando della graduatoria. Dopo 7 prove, a seguirlo in classifica generale è Groupama Extreme di Franck Cammas. Nella scia della coppia di testa resiste Oman Sails Renaissance, entrato in cantiere subito dopo il rientro in porto dov’è stato sottoposto a lavori di riparazione che si sono protratti per tutta la notte.

ISHARES CUP, OMAN SAILS MASIRAH LEADS AFTER HARD FIRST DAY
[Source iShaares Cup] Capsize & collisions in gusty conditions on day 1 of the iShares Cup Kiel: “It was carnage out there…” said Oman Sail crew David Carr. Ecover’s capsized between races 3 and 4, resulted in a broken mast. The mast was cut away from the overturned boat, and both boat and mast were towed back to the iShares Cup pitlane. Ecover crewman Bruno Dubois received a nasty cut to the head requiring stitches. And then after a full on day of racing, in the final race, Loick Peyron’s Renaissance hit the new Wirsol Team Germany Kiel Sailing City resulting in major work overnight for both boats. It didn’t all go Oman Sail Masirah’s way today in the difficult and gusty conditions on Kiel Fjord but after 7 races on day of 1 round 4, Pete Cumming’s team are, once again, at the top of the leaderboard. iSheras Cup – Kiel – Tutto pronto a Kiel per lo svolgimento della quarta tappa dell’iShares Cup, circuito ad alte prestazioni riservato agli Extreme 40, catamarani ultra leggeri e capaci di spunti notevoli. Al via, nelle acque tedesche, ci saranno tutti e 10 i team che sino ad ora hanno incrociato almeno una volta tra le boe dell’evento, più una new entry.

“Non vedo l’ora che la battaglia abbia inizio – ha spiegato Mike Golding, timoniere di Ecover – Il campo di regata è stupendo: le regate saranno molto veloci grazie all’arrivo di una perturbazione che determinerà l’aumento della brezza”.

Condizioni che non piaceranno certo a Wirsol Team Germany Kiel, al debutto sull’Extreme 40, entrato nelle disponibilità dell’armatore solo due settimane fa. L’approccio del team teutonico è tale che ieri, nel corso di una regata di allenamento, ha speronato violentemente il cat Luna, uscito dall’incontro con le ossa rotte: “La collisione è stata davvero dura – ha spiegato Philippe Mourniac di Luna – Abbiamo dovuto alare la barca e lavorare tutta la notte per porre rimedio alle conseguenze del sinistro. Ora tutto sembra essere a posto”.

La frazione, oltre a segnare il ritorno del campionissimo Mitch Booth a bordo di Holmatro, servirà per fare chiarezza in classifica generale: Oman Sail Masirah e Gitana Extreme sono separati da un solo punto quando il circuito ha sorpassato la boa di metà stagione.

“Aiamo avanti di un punto – ha commentato Yann Guichard di Gitana Extreme – Un vantaggio che ci impedisce di fare pre tattica, specie in considerazione del fatto che qui a Kiel si annunciano condizioni davvero impegnative”.

“Tutti ci chiedono quale sia la chiave del nostro successo – ha affermato Pete Cumming di Masirah – In effetti in acqua ci sono velisti molto più esperti di noi. Credo quindi che il tanto lavoro svolto abbia dato, e stia dando, i suoi frutti”.

ISHARES CUP, SKIPPERS READY FOR ROUND 4

iShares Cup – Cowes – Uno spettacolo che i cronisti hanno definito simile alla Formula 1 e che il pubblico, presente in grande numero, ha dimostrato di gradire sin dalle battute iniziali di una Cowes Week che per la classe Extreme 40, impegnata nella terza frazione dell’iShares Cup 2009, si è rivelata ricca di emozioni e di regate.

Nonostante la supremazia dimostrata da Masirah, nuovo leader del circuito ai danni dell’assente BMW Oracle Racing grazie alla seconda vittoria di tappa consecutiva, lo scontro tra i contendenti non ha conosciuto un solo momento di pausa e i protagonisti, tutti per altro molto vicini in classifica generale, hanno infiammato il campo di regata con incroci e manovre al limite del regolamento nel corso di una tre giorni caratterizata da condizioni meteo adeguate all’importanza della manifestazione.

A chiudere alle spalle dell’Extreme 40 di Pete Cumming sono stati gli uomini di Yann Guichard su Gitana Extreme, bravi a contenere il ritorno di Loick Peyron e del suo Renaissance, giunto al match decisivo con uno svantaggio minimo rispetto al diretto avversario, ma nonostante questo incapace di impensierirlo davvero.

iSHARES CUP, MASIRAH CLINCH UK ROUND AT SENSATIONAL ISHARES CUP
[iShares Cup Press Release] An ecstatic Oman Sail Masirah have won the UK round of the iShares Cup at Cowes Week and now take the overall lead in the iShares Cup 2009 series at the halfway stage of the six-round European circuit. It was a battle to the end for Yann Guichard and Loick Peyron with Gitana Extreme – Groupe LCF Rothschild clinching the final double points race to take 2nd place on the UK podium.

Celebrities from the world of music, Formula 1 and TV joined the iShares Cup to ride shotgun on an Extreme 40. TV presenter and extreme adventurer, Ben Fogle, captured the mood perfectly: “This is the Formula 1 of sailing – I can’t remember the last time I saw so many people along the shoreline watching – I loved it!” Thousands of spectators have watched this ‘grandstand’ event over the last 3 days that has without doubt been the opening headline act of Cowes Week. iShares Cup – Cowes – Rimediando solo piazzamenti oscillanti tra la prima e la seconda posizione, Masirah, uno dei due Extreme 40 rappresentanti i colori di Oman Sail, ha esteso la propria leadership nella terza tappa dell’iShares Cup 2009 e mira deciso alla testa della classifica generale, lacista indifesa da BMW Oracle Racing, assente all’appuntamento che si sta svolgendo nelle acque britanniche di Cowes. A tentare di tenere testa all’equipaggio di Pete Cumming, assolutamente perfetto nel corso di una giornata caratterzzata da condizioni impegnative, è stato Gitana Extreme di Yann Guichard, comunque molto staccato in classifica e più attento a osservare le mosse di Renaissance di Loick Peyron, terzo a due soli punti dalla seconda piazza.

Le manche disputate oggi hanno messo a dura prova scafi ed equipaggi: Team iShares, che solo 24 ore fa era secondo, si è ritirato in seguito a una collisione, costata alla barca di Shirley Robertson danni allo scafo e la rottura del bompresso. Problemi anche per Holmatro, penalizzato dalla rottura della drizza randa e per BT, che ha riportato la rottura dello strallo di prua.

Le ultime speranze di rimonta Gitana Extreme e Renaissance se le giocheranno domani, giornata conclusiva della Cowes Week.

iSHARES CUP, CROWD PLEASING EXTREME 40S STEAL THE SHOW

iShares Cup – Cowes – Primo giorno di regate a Cowes nell’ambito della terza tappa dell’iShares Cup 2009 e prima giornata di emozioni per gli appassionati della classe Extreme 40. L’assenza del leader BMW Oracle Racing, che ha tutti i velisti impegnati a San Diego negli allenamenti a bordo del suo maxi trimarano, ha lasciato via libera a Masirah, uno dei due scafi armati dall’Oman Sail.

L’equipaggio di Pete Cumming, seconda forza della classifica generale a un solo punto dagli statunitensi, dimostrando di gradire le impegnative condizioni tipiche del Solent, ha vinto 5 delle 6 manche disputate e guida la classifica provvisoria con buon margine su Team iShares, guidato dalla campionissima britannica Shirley Robertson, profonda conoscitrice del campo di regata.

In terza posizione, davanti a Renaissance di Loick Peyron, da poco passato nelle fila di Alinghi, si è attestato Gitana Extreme di Yann Guichard, abile nel non concedere troppo spazio a Masirah, avversario diretto nella lotta per la leadership assoluta.

iSHARES CUP, COWES WEEK DAY 1 BELONG TO OMAN SAIL MASIRAH
[iShares Cup Press Release] Day 1 of the iShares Cup at Cowes Week firmly belongs to Pete Cumming and the crew of Oman Sail Masirah – winning 5 out of the 6 races held today. Olympic Double Gold Medalist Shirley Robertson and her crew on Team iShares excelled at their ‘home’ event, benefiting from their local knowledge scoring their best result to date in the iShares Cup 2009 series and go into the second day of competition in second place on the leaderboard. French team Gitana Extreme – Groupe LCF Rothschild rallied in the second half to put them third overall just ahead of Loick Peyron on Oman Sail’s Renaissance. iShares Cup – Hyeres – La seconda tappa dell’iShare Cup, disputata nel corso del week end a Hyeres, è passata in archivio con la tradizionale regata dal doppio punteggio. A Masirah bastava arrivare sopra la settima posizione per assicurarsi la vittoria overall, cui ambivano anche BMW Oracle Racing e Renaissance, il secondo scafo dall’Oman Sail.

L’equipaggio di James Spithill ha tentato il tutto per tutto ed ha messo a segno un’ottima prestazione, vincendo la manche finale. Primo sulla linea, il team statunitense ha recuperato del terreno su Masirah, finito terzo sotto la guida di Pete Cumming, ma non abbastanza per impensierirlo. Solo ottavo è giunto Renaissance di Loick Peyron, che ha corso il serio rischio di essere sopravanzato da Gitana-Extreme e Groupama, fermatisi a una manciata di punti dal podio.

In classifica generale, grazie a due secondi posti BMW Oracle Racing guida con un solo punto di vantaggio su Gitana Extreme e Masirah. La prossima tappa dell’iShares Cup, circuito riservato agli Extreme 40, è in programma a Cowes tra l’1 e il 3 agosto prossimi.

iShares Cup – Hyeres – Una collisione con Ecover, costata ingenti danni al timone di Renaissance, ha obbligato il Comitato di Regata della iShares Cup Hyeres-TPM, seconda tappa del circuito riservato agli Extreme 40, a concedere la riparazione al multiscafo di Loick Peyron che, sulla base dei punti raccolti ieri, è ora secondo in classifica generale alle spalle di Masirah, abile nel confermare la leadership conquistata ieri.

A subire le conseguenze di questa decisione sono stati James Spithill e il suo BMW Oracle Racing, oggi apparso in gran forma al punto da conquistare due primi di giornata, e Gitana Extreme, scivolati di una piazza e ora attestati in terza e quarta posizione.

Negli occhi di tutti restano comunque le immagini di una giornata davvero spettacolare, caratterizzata da condizioni meteo impegnative che hanno spinto gli Extreme 40 a velocità impressionanti.

iSHARES CUP, REDERESS FOR PEYRON RESHUFFLES THE LEADERBOARD
[iShares Press Release] Oman Sail’s Renaissance were forced to sit out racing today after damage to their rudder in race 1 sustained in a collision with Ecover – they have now been awarded average points based on the 7 races they completed so far at Round 2 of the iShares Cup Hyères-TPM. This has now put them back on the leaderboard in second place going into the final day.

As a result, BMW Oracle Racing and Gitana Extreme – Groupe LCF Rothschild who were both on top form, finishing in 2nd and 3rd behind Oman Sail’s Masirah before the redress was announced, have now dropped a place on the leaderboard.

Mind you, James Spithill and his crew onboard BMW Oracle Racing will be much happier with their performance today – taking victory in the penultimate and final race of day 2 at the iShares Cup Hyères-TPM.

It was a spectacular finish to the second day – racing downwind under the massive gennaker in a big breeze is a precarious proposition – the bows dig in putting the 40-ft catamaran as risk of a pitch-pole. Today all the teams kept their Extreme 40s upright – if the breeze had been any stronger that might not have been the case…
