VENDEE GLOBE, NEXT EDITION WILL START ON OCTOBER 21TH 2012
Vendée Globe – Les Sables d’Olonne – Philippe de Villiers, President of the Vendée Globe, has officially announced that the 2008-2009 Vendée Globe will begin at 13.02, October 21th 2012. The announcement was made during the spectacular awards ceremony held last night at Les Sables d’Olonne.

Vendée Globe – Parigi – Jean-Pierre Dick guarda già al futuro e in vista dellaVendée Globe del 2012, grazie al rinnovato appoggio di Paprec-Virbac, ha commissionato la costruzione di un nuovo IMOCA 60, il terzo della serie. La barca verrà realizzata in Nuova Zelanda su progetto di Van Peteghem Lauriot Prevost/Verdier.

Una decisione presa con grande anticipo, che potrebbe dare a Dick - ritiratosi a causa di problemi ai timoni quando era all’altezza della Nuova Zelanda dopo aver guidato la regata per diversi giorni - un quid in più in fatto di conoscenza del mezzo e affidabilità. Nessuno degli altri skipper iscritti alla Vendée Globe 2008-2009, infatti, ha già maturato una scelta in merito ad un’eventuale nuova partecipazione. Deve maturarla anche Marc Guillemot. Lo skipper di Safran, protagonista di un’ottima performace, ha infatti ottenuto il benestare dello sponsor, ma non sa se accettare l’invito o meno: scioglierà la riserva nel 2010 e se sarà al via, utilizzerà quasi certamente la stessa barca usata quest’anno.

In acqua entro un anno
Come detto, dopo otto anni trascorsi collaborando con Bruce Farr, Jean-Pierre Dick ha deciso di puntare sullo studio VPLP e su Guillaume Verdier, ideatori delle barche di Kito de Pavant e Marc Guillemot, e sulal manodopera kiwi.

La barca sarà pronta entro un anno e potrà prendere parte, nel corso del 2010, alla Route du Rhum, alla Barcelona Race, quindi, nel 2011, alla Transat Jacques. Una lista di regata importanti, che condurranno all’Everst orizzontale: la Vendée Globe 2012.

JEAN-PIERRE DICK FAIT COSTRUIR UN NUVEAU BATEAU
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Jean-Pierre Dick est déjà sur le chemin du Vendée Globe 2012. Il a annoncé que Paprec-Virbac allait construire un nouveau monocoque 60 pieds, le troisième. La construction se fera en Nouvelle-Zélande, mais cette fois sur plan VPLP/Verdier.

Si la très grande majorité des skippers réserve pour le moment sa décision de participer au prochain Vendée Globe dans 4 ans, on est sûrs à ce jour – début avril – qu’il y a déjà deux bateaux certains de tenter l’aventure de ce qui sera le 7e Vendée Globe: Safran a ainsi annoncé pendant la course le prolongement du contrat avec Marc Guillemot pour quatre ans, probablement avec le même bateau. Marc décidera en 2010 s’il en sera le skipper pour une deuxième tentative. Jean-Pierre Dick, lui, a déjà pris la décision: il sera à la barre d’un troisième Paprec-Virbac, flambant neuf, pour jouer les premiers rôles. Vendée Globe  - Port La Foret - Come annunciato nel messaggio trasmesso agli skipper impegnati nella regata virtuale, Michel Desjoyeaux, dominatore della Vendée Globe, è determinato a prendere parte alla prossima edizione della manifestazione digitale.

Lo skipper di Foncia, ad appena tre settimane dal completamento del giro del mondo, ha già iniziato a pianificare la propria partecipazione grazie a un meeting molto particolare organizzato dal giornale L’Equipe per la giornata odierna. Prima di partire per un meritato periodo di riposo in una ignota località tropicale, Desjoyeaux ha infatti incontrato Hughes Fournier, skipper di Inderweltsein, lo scafo vincitore della Vendée Globe virtuale.

Dopo aver visitato Foncia, in secca per essere sottoposto a una serie di controlli e piccole modifiche, Hughes ha dato la prima lezione di navigazione virtuale a Michel, definito “uno studente molto abile” dallo specialista della vela digitale. Prima di salutarsi, i due hanno parlato dei programmi di Desjoyeaux che, al rientro delle ferie, inizierà a prepararsi per il Grand Prix Petit Navire e la Transat Jacques Vabre. Inoltre, il Professore ha messo in calendario anche la partecipazione alla Solitaire du Figaro, il rally per solitari previsto per l’inizio di agosto,

VENDEE GLOBE, TWO WINNERS COMPARED

Foncia’s Skipper, just three weeks after completing his marathon around the world, has already started to work on the subject at a special meeting just held by L’Equipe Magazine to be published today Saturday.

Before taking off to the warm waters of the destination under the sun for a well deserved vacation, the Vendee Globe’s heroes has met last Monday with the winner of the Virtual Vendée Globe Hughes Fournier Skipper of Inderweltsein.

After visiting Foncia, Hughes gave a first virtual sailing lesson in Michel virtual who “is a quick learner” he said. Foncia is now in the shed to begin checks, repairs and some minor changes before she will be ready for the Grand Prix Petit Navire, the SNSM Record and the Transat Jacques Vabre at the end of the year. The Professor’s program for 2009 is already fully booked with also a participation in the Course du Figaro solo in August.

Vendée Globe – Les Sables d’Olonne – Giornata di arrivi quella che si è appena conclusa a Les Sables d’Olonne, dove a tagliare il traguardo sono stati tre solitari. A completare la Vendée Globe, nell’0rdine Marc Guillemot (Safran), Brian Thompson (Bahrain Team Pindar) e Dee Caffari (Aviva).

Grande è stata la soddisfazione di Guillemot che, raggiunta la linea di arrivo alla 01.21 GMT di domenica notte, ha fatto sua la terza posizione. Lo skipper di Safran, per certi versi, ha portato a termine un’impresa epica. A 1000 miglia dall’arrivo, infatti, il suo IMOCA 60 ha perso il bulbo e da quel momento Guillemot, determinato a finire la sua avventura, ha continuato a navigare contando solo sul momento raddrizzante garantito dai ballast. Il suo obiettivo era quello di contenere entro 50 ore il distacco da Samantha Davies: ricordiamo che il solitario di La Trinité sur Mer ha potuto contare su un abbuono di 82 ore – 32 per la Davies – giuria per aver partecipato alle operazioni di recupero di Yann Eliés.

Alla fine, con un tempo complessivo di 95 giorni 3 ore 19 minuti e 36 secondi, Marc Guillemot, classificatosi terzo a pari merito con il ritirato Vincent Riou – finito senz’albero mentre tentava di portare in salvo Jean Le Cam - ha anticipato Sam Davies, comunque protagonista di una grande partecipazione, di 1 ora 19 minuti e 25 secondi.

Nel tardo pomeriggio si sono invece registrati gli arrivi di Brian Thompson (Bahrain Team Pindar) e Dee Caffari (Aviva), quinto e sesta di una Vendée Globe davvero in grado di tenere fede al proprio nome.

MARC GUILLEMOT TAKES THIRD
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Marc Guillemot (Safran) crossed the Les Sables d’Olonne finish line at 01.21 GMT this morning (Sunday) to clinch a hard won third place in this epic sixth edition of the Vendée Globe solo non stop around the world race.

To complete his first Vendée Globe the skipper has had to sail for the final 1000 miles, since he was just to the NE of the Azores, with no keel. His keel dropped out of his boat on Monday 9th February and since then the skipper from La Trinité has had to sail prudently but still managed to wrest third from Sam Davies, GBR, (Roxy) who finished yesterday. Guillemot received a time compensation of 82 hours for diverting from his course to assist in the evacuation of injured Yann Eliès 800 miles south of Australia in the Southern Ocean.

Accompanied by a fleet of media and spectator boats Guillemot crossed the finish line on a chilly, dark night, ending his epic race having taken a net 95 days 3 hours 19 minutes and 36 seconds to complete the course. Vendée Globe – Les Sables d’Olonne – Tagliando il traguardo di Les Sables d’Olonne alle 00.41 GMT di oggi, Samantha Davies è stata la terza concorrente a portare a termine la sesta edizione della Vendée Globe.

Per lei non si può ancora parlare di terza posizione acquisita. La skipper di Roxy, infatti, per essere la seconda donna a salire sul podio dell’evento, dovrà aspettare ancora due giorni. Tutto dipenderà da quando Marc Guillemot riuscirà a raggiungere l’arrivo. Lo skipper di Safran, infatti, può contare su un abbuono di 82 ore per aver prestato soccorso a Yann Eliés, 50 ore in più rispetto a Sam Davies che fece rotta verso Generali senza però raggiungerlo.

Prima degli inglesi – in regata ci sono ancora Brian Thompson e Dee Caffari - la solitaria britannica ha portato il suo Roxy, scafo vecchio di nove anni già vincitore delle due precedenti edizioni, lungo le 27470 miglia del percorso alla media di 12.02 nodi.

Indipendentemente dal piazzamento finale, la performance della Devies verrà ricordata tanto per gli innegabili meriti sportivi, quanto per l’effervescenza e l’allegria che ha sempre trasmesso nel corso dei collegamenti con il quartier generale della Vendée Globe.

SAM DAVIES FINISHES THIRD IN LES SABLES D’OLONNE
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Samantha Davies, GBR, (Roxy) crossed the finishing line at 00.41 GMT as the third competitor to complete this epic sixth edition of the Vendée Globe solo non stop around the world race and return to Les Sables d’Olonne.

Ironically Davies will have to wait two days and two hours (50 hours) to see whether she hang on to third place in this sixth Vendée Globe as the final result will depend on Marc Guillemot’s finishing time.

Guillemot was given a time compensation for standing by the badly injured skipper Yann Elies who was rescued from his Open 60 Generali on 20th December.

95 days 4 hours 39 mins 01 sec WITH redress: Roxy crossed the finish in the midst of a dark February night, in the small hours of St Valentine’s day, having sailed 27470 miles on the water at an average speed of 12.02 knots. Leggi tutto »

Vendée Globe – Les Sables d’Olonne – Dopo essersi riconquistato il terzo posto in corsa verso Les Sables d’Olonne, Marc Guillemot a bordo del suo Safran, ha riscontrato gravi problemi alla chiglia. Lui, come Roland Jourdain, ha colpito, circa un mese fa, un cetaceo. Proprio questo impatto, potrebbe essere la causa dei problemi che sta vivendo oggi. La chiglia ancora non si sarebbe staccata ma, fa sapere il suo shore team, la situazione non è semplice. Guillemot ha per il momento adottato misure di sicurezza un pò precarie, fissando la testa della chiglia all’albero e ad un winch, proseguendo così la sua corsa.

Lo tallona, a una manciata di miglia di distanza, Samantha Davies che a bordo del suo Roxy prosegue la gara in direzione Les Sables d’Olonne.

In quinta e sesta posizione Brian Thompson e Dee Caffari, rispettivamente a 604 e 650 miglia da Marc Guillemot.

KEEL PROBLEM ON SAFRAN
[Vendée Globe Press Release]This morning at 5h40 GMT, Thierry Brault, head of Marc Guillemot’s shore team rang the Vendée Globe Race Headquarter to inform of serious keel damage aboard Safran.

We can add that on 11th December, while Marc Guillemot was sailing at more than 20 knots towards the Kerguelen Islands, Safran had a violent collision with a sea mammal. This impact could well have led to the problem he is experiencing today. In fact, the keel on the monohull has worked loose in its box and has slid down a few centimetres.

Since he noticed this problem, Marc Guillemot has managed to secure his keel using ropes, linking the keel head to the mast and winch. The boat therefore remains watertight and stable, but this repair job is rather precarious.

Marc Guillemot has not requested any help for the moment. He is in good health and continuing on his way.

Vendée Globe – Les Sables d’Olonne – Tagliando il traguardo alle 08.41 di questa mattina, spinto da venti attorno ai 20 nodi, Armel Le Cléac’h ha conquistato il secondo posto nella Vendée Globe.

Lo skipper di Brit Air, terzo sin dall’ingresso in Atlantico e salito di un gradino in seguito al ritiro di Veolia Environnement, ha portato a termine la sua fatica in 89 giorni, 9 ore, 39 minuti e 35 secondi. Tempo che tiene già conto dell’abbuono di 11 ore accordato dalla Giuria Internazionale per aver partecipato al recupero di Jean Le Cam, finito scuffiato sul suo VM Materiaux a 200 miglia da Capo Horn.

“Arrivare all’alba e trovare così tanta gente ad aspettarmi è una cosa davvero magica. Mai mi sarei aspettato di arrivare secondo dietro al grande Michel Desjoyeaux – ha commentato Armel Le Cléac’h appena sceso a terra – Devo ancora rendermi conto di quanto sta accadendo. Mi sembra impossibile potermi riposare e se ripenso alla mia gara credo di aver avuto dalla mia la costanza, la capacità e quel pizzico di fortuna che non deve mai mancare”.

In mare restano ancora 9 solitari. Marc Guillemot, terzo su Safran, è ancora a 1607 miglia dall’arrivo, distanza che gli impedirà di far valere a suo vantaggio l’abbuono di 82 ore riconosciutoli per aver assistito Yann Eliés in difficoltà in pieno Oceano Pacifico.

Poco più indietro è Samantha Davies. La skipper di Roxy spera di migliorare il record di pecorrenza al femminile fissato da Ellen Mac Arthur.

BRIT AIR LANDS SECOND IN LES SABLES D’OLONNE SUNSHINE
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Breton race rookie Armel Le Cléac’h crossed the finishing line of the Vendée Globe this morning (Saturday 7th February) at 08.41 GMT, after a net race time of 89 days 9 hours and 39 minutes 35 seconds of racing, taking into account the 11 hours redress given by the International Jury for his participation in the rescue of Jean Le Cam.

“It’s magical! Absolutely incredible seeing all these people here to meet me in the sunshine in Les Sables d’Olonne. I’m very pleased and I could feel the tears welling up, when I saw all those motor boats on the water around Brit’Air. I’m coming to terms with the fact that I’ve finished and can now rest, but finishing second is something I find hard to get my head around. Vendée Globe - Azzorre – Arrivato ieri nel porto di Delgado, Sao Miguel nelle Azzorre, Roland Jourdain ha potuto effettuare l’ispezione del danno e ha riscontrato la totale mancanza della chiglia della sua Veolia Environnement. Dopo aver navigato per 700 miglia con un danno che non poteva quantificare e aver preso all’ultimo la decisione di abbandonare la sua corsa verso Les Sables d’Olonne, Jourdain ipotizza ora di aver perso la chiglia in due momenti. Prima l’urto con il cetaceo gli ha staccato il bulbo, danneggiando però tutta l’appendice che si è rotta in due momenti successivi.

Dopo essere salito al secondo posto della classifica grazie al ritiro di Jourdain, Armel Le Cléac’h deve percorrere ancora 963 miglia prima di raggiungere il traguardo. Ora però al timone di Brit Air, Armel si sta preparando per superare un grosso ostacolo. Il meteo infatti, prevede l’arrivo di venti da nord-ovest dell’intensità di 45 nodi con raffiche fino a 60 nodi e onde di 10 metri.
Dietro di lui, a circa 1200 miglia, Samantha Davies precede Marc Guillemont di una manciata di miglia.

Vendée Globe - Les Sables d’Olonne – Dopo 84 giorni passati in mare, Roland Jourdain ha preso la decisione di terminare la sua Vendée Globe fermandosi alle Azzorre. Dopo aver perso parte della chiglia della sua Veolia Environnement giovedì scorso, ha fatto del suo meglio per stabilizzare la barca anche in condizioni difficili.

“Una volta che la decisione è stata presa, è fatta. Pensavo sarebbe stato più difficile, ma visto che le condizioni meteo stanno peggiorando – per domani sono previsti 50 nodi di vento e onde di 10 metri – sarebbe veramente irragionevole continuare con la barca in questo stato. Si tratta di una pillola amara da ingoiare, ma è giusto così.”

In questo momento Roland Jourdain sta facendo rotta verso Ponta Delgada, sull’Isola di Sao Miguel, a circa 50 miglia di distanza.

Al secondo posto è salito così Armel Le Cléac’h. Lo skipper di Brit Air anticipa di 1000 miglia Samantha Davies, terza a bordo di Roxy.

THE END FOR ROLAND JOURDAIN: “I WON’T PUSH MY LUCK”
[Vendée Globe Press Release]After 84 days of sailing, Roland Jourdain took the decision this morning to bring his Vendée Globe to an end and stop racing at the Azores.
After losing part of his keel last Thursday, the skipper of Veolia Environnement has done his utmost to ensure the stability of his boat and his own safety in some difficult sea conditions. He is currently continuing towards Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel, some 50 miles away, which he is due to reach this afternoon. Two members of his shore team will help him over the final miles.

” Once the decision was taken, that was it. I would have found it more difficult to come to this decision if the forecasts had indicated light winds, but it’s the exact opposite. For 3rd February, they are talking about 50-knot winds with a ten metre swell. I’ve been lucky to have come this far without capsizing, particularly in yesterday’s storm, so I’m not going to push my luck. I have gambled enough. It’s no use now and it would be unreasonable to continue. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, but it would be even harder, if 24 hours after passing a port, where I could have stopped, I capsized and had to abandon the boat. “

Vendée Globe - Les Sables d’Olonne – Percorrendo le 28.303 miglia del percorso alla meia di 13.2 nodi, Michel Desjoyeaux, oltre a conquistare il secondo successo personale nella Vendée Globe, ne ha migliorato il record di 3 giorni, 7 ore e 39 secondi.

Spinto da una brezza sui venti nodi, lo skipper di Foncia ha tagliato la linea di arrivo domenica 1 febbraio alle 15.11 GMT, dopo 84 giorni, 3 ore e 9 minuti di navigazione. Ad accogliere il solitario francese, tornato a Les Sables d’Olonne poche ore dopo la partenza per riparare un’avaria all’impianto elettrico e ripartito con notevole ritardo rispetto al gruppo di testa, migliaia di spettatori e centinaia di barche.

“E’ incredibile. A poche miglia dall’arrivo è uscito il sole e l’atmosfera si è fatta magica. Avevo già vissuto tutto ciò otto anni fa, ma la sensazione che si prova nell’essere qui è assolutamente incredibile – ha spiegato un commosso Desjoyeaux, che già aveva vinto la regata nel 2000-2001 su PRB – Non mi sono mai preoccupato per il fatto di essere ripartito e di dover recuperare terreno: la regata l’avevo già vinta prima di partire, grazie alle scelte fatte, al team che mi ha supportato e all’esperienza su cui posso contare”.

In mare restano ancora tutti gli altri. Veolia Environnement, vessato dai problemi al bulbo, è secondo ma ha subito il ritorno di Brit Air. Armel Le Cléac’h, potendo contare su un abbuono di 11 ore, spera di poter far sua la piazza d’onore, ma in questo gioco da solitari, la speranza vera del velista francese è quella di conquistare il secondo gradino del podio sull’acqua.

HISTORIC SECOND VENDEE GLOBE VICTORY FOR DESJOYEAUX
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Sailing more than 28,303 miles, averaging around 13.2 knots, French solo skipper Michel Desjoyeaux has shattered the Vendée Globe race record today by 3 days 7 hours and 39 seconds on his way to becoming the first skipper ever to win the solo non stop around the world race twice.

The course is effectively 1150 miles longer than in 2004 when after winning the race in 2000-1 on PRB, eclipsing the young emerging British skipper Ellen MacArthur by 1 day 28 minutes, Desjoyeaux joined the 30 strong field for this race, the biggest entry ever for a round the world race in sailing history, as one of the clear favourites.

After a successful odyssey into big racing multihulls, Desjoyeaux returned to monohulls in 2007 when he won the highly competitive Solitaire du Figaro, going on to win the Transat Vabre in late 2007 on his return to the IMOCA Open 60 class in which the Vendée Globe.

Desjoyeaux crossed the finish on Sunday 1st February at 15.11 GMT , after 84 days 03 hours 09 minutes of racing. Foncia completed the race in twenty knots of breeze under sunny skies, greeted by a massive armada of spectator boats before beking warmly welcomed by huge crowds who gathered along the waterfront and harbour area of Les Sables d’Olonne, where the race departed at 12.02 GMT November 9th 2008.

Desjoueaux said: “It’s incredible, this little ray of sunshine is making it magical. I may have done it eight years ago, but it’s still incredible. I can’t take it in. I have been two months trying to understand what’s going on, how I’m doing it and so here I’m just enjoying it then we’ll think about it afterwards. I never really worried about being behind. Vendée Globe – Oceano Atlantico – Passato Cape Finisterre, Michel Desjoyeaux è tornato a solcare le acque del Golfo di Biscaglia. Lo skipper di Foncia si prepare a vivere quella che, almeno per il momento, sarà la sua ultima giornata in mare: tutto dipenderà da quanto riuscirà a camminare. Sino a poche ore fa, infatti, l’IMOCA 60 del leader volava a 16-17 nodi mentre ora ha rallentato.

Lo shore team di Desjoyeaux, che ha visto il suo skipper per l’ultima quando tornò a Les Sables d’Olonne per risolvere un problema elettrico poche ore dopo essere partito, lo attende per festeggiarlo, al pari del pubblico, giunto in massa, approfittando del concomitante week end.

Alle sue spalle, Rolnd Jourdain teme di avere ormai perso il secondo posto. Veolia Environnement è in rotta verso Sao Miguel nelle Azzorre, dove spera di arrivare prima del calar delle tenebre per potersi accertare del danno subito alla deriva della sua barca. A incalzarlo è Armel Le Cléac’h. Lo skipper di Brit Air, appena scappato dalla stretta dell’alta pressione tipica delle Azzorre, ha da recuperare oltre 400 miglia, ma sa di poter contare su un abbuono di 11 ore.

Vicini sia sull’acqua che nelle performance sono Sam Davies e Marc Guillemot, quarta e quinto in classifica generale a oltre 2500 miglia dalla vetta. Separati da una manciata di miglia, i due continuano la loro risalita verso Les Sables d’Olonne. Lo skipper di Safran ancora non ha perso le speranze di poter salire podio. Per il salvataggio di Yann Eliés, infatti, gli sono state riconosciute 82 ore di abbuono.

A TIME TO SAVOUR
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Keeping thoughts of what seems an inevitable and comprehensive victory at bay Michel Desjoyeaux has had no let up during a breezy Friday night which has seen Foncia still posting high average speeds passing Cape Finisterre. Desjoyeaux was making 16-17 knots during the middle part of yesterday evening and has slowed little through the night.

Today will be the final day at sea for Desjoyeaux before he reaches the coast of Vendée and the leader has pledged to have a quiet day as he concentrates on the final miles. Meanwhile his shore team are also going through the last hours of the race, savouring those precious moments. From the boat builders to the technical support team and all those helping him psychologically from a distance, the back room team have played a vital role in helping Desjoyeaux to victory.

The most obvious reminder was when 200 miles into the race, Jean-Paul Roux, the team manager at Mer Agitée, Desjoyeaux’s company which runs his projects, received a call from the skipper announcing that he was returning to Les Sables d’Olonne with an electrical problem following a leak in his ballast tank. Vend̩e Globe РOceano Atlantico РQuello che era nato come un dubbio ora diventa una certezza: Roland Jourdain ha perso parte del bulbo della sua Veolia Environnement.

Per il momento la barca viene tenuta dritta dai ballast di poppa e prua, ma il francese fa sapere che, a causa delle condizioni del mare, è impossibilitato ad immergersi per constatare l’entità del danno. La sua rotta non è cambiata, prosegue per Les Sables d’Olonne a circa 888,5 miglia da Michel Desjoyeaux e spera che le condizioni metereologiche non volgano al peggio. In tal caso, Jourdain farà prua verso le Azzorre, distanti circa 600 miglia.

Veolia Environnement è in forte ritardo nei confronti di Foncia, ormai lanciato verso una meritata affermazione, anche se disavventure come quella capitata a Roland Jourdain sono sempre in agguato. Per Jourdain comincia a materializzarsi l’incubo Armel Le Cléac’h. Lo skipper di Brit Air è lontano meno di 400 miglia dall’avversario e ha per giunta un abbuono di 11 ore da calcolare dopo l’arrivo. VEOLIA ENVIRONNEMENT HAS LOST HER KEEL BULB
[Vendée Globe Press Release] It has been confirmed by Roland Jourdain’s team that Veolia Environnement has lost her keel bulb.

The boat is being kept as stable as possible with the ballast in the bow and in the middle of with, the centre of effort of the sailplan kept as low as possible. It is still unknown exactly where the damage begins, as it may be the joint between the bulb and keel or higher on the keel blade.

For the moment it is out of the question to heel the boat over to see as this would risk causing the IMOCA Open 60 to capsize. It is also impossible for Jourdain to risk diving because of the sea state.

The first reaction was to continue to Les Sables d’Olonne, but it is understood that the skipper will not take any undue risk. For the moment he does not need to change course as the Azores are 600 miles ahead on his route. Vendée Globe – Oceano Atlantico – Alle 04.00 UTC di oggi, Roland Jourdain ha contattato il suo shore team per segnalare un’avaria alla chiglia del suo IMOCA 60. Al momento la barca è stabile e continua la navigazione verso le Azzorre, lontane circa 640 miglia.

A metà della notte, mentre navigava con velatura ridotta, Jourdain ha sentito un forte rumore provenire da  sotto lo scafo (probabilmente generato dalla collisione con un cetaceo). Fermata la barca, lo skipper francese l’ha ispezionata a lungo senza riscontrare alcuna anomalia. Messe a segno le vele,  l’IMOCA 60 è ripartito, ma quasi subito ha assunto un assetto anomalo.

Jourdain ha immediatamente dedotto di aver riportato un danno alla chiglia, anche se non è ancora possibile stabilire se questo sia dipeso dalla perdita del bulbo o da un’avaria alla lama di deriva. 

VEOLIA ENVIRONNEMENT HAS KEEL PROBLEM
[Vendée Globe Press Release] At  around 04.00 GMT this morning, Roland Jourdain called his shore team to tell them that he has a problem with his keel. For the moment, the boat is stable and continuing on her way towards the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, some 640 miles to his North East.

Towards the end of the night while sailing under mainsail and genoa, Jourdain heard a suspicious noise on board Veolia Environnement and went to find out where it came from. He stopped his boat to inspect it, but did not find anything unusual. It was only after trimming the sails on again that the boat took on an abnormal heel.

Jourdain concluded almost immediately that there is damage to his keel. For the moment, he does not know whether he has lost the bulb or whether the keel blade has been damaged.

Today’s problem is possibly a consequence of his collision with a sea mammal on 8th January as the boat has had no subsequent impact with any type of floating objects.

VENDEE GLOBE, ELEVENTH WEEK’S HIGHLIGHTS
Vendée Globe - Atlantic Ocean - The highlights of the eleventh Vendée Globe’s week. Michel Desjoyeaux is close to the victory. Foncia leads by more than 769 miles over Veolia Environnement. The others are very far from the head of the race: Armel Le Cléac’h, third, is more than 1000 miles from Desjoyeaux.

Vendée Globe - Oceano Atlantico - Non camminava così veloce da tanto tempo Michel Desjoyeaux. Annusata l’aria di casa, lo skipper di Foncia è tornato a schiacciare il piede sul pedale e ha fatto segnare i 17.5 nodi di media nel corso degli ultimi rilevamenti. Roland Jourdain, eclissatosi sin dal momento dell’ingresso in Oceano Atlantico, è ora un puntino nella scia di Desjoyeaux e attende di applaudirne il successo. Quando al battistrada mancano poco più di 1200 miglia all’arrivo, Veolia Environnement è staccato di 769 miglia dal battistrada ed è ormai rassegnato.

Sempre terzo Armel Le Cléac’h, impegnato su Brit Air nel trascorrere i giorni che lo separano dall’arrivo a Les Sable d’Olonne, dove, con ogni probabilità, farà sua la terza piazza.

Brian Thompson, che sin dalla partenza aveva dichiarato di gradire le condizioni tipiche dell’Atlantico, sta viaggiando a una media di 14.3 nodi ed è a sole 180 miglia da Marc Guillemot (Safran), tornato in quinta posizione dopo che Samantha Davies (Roxy), ora bloccata nei Doldrums, ha ingranato la marcia superiore.

Intanto in Vandea si comincia ad organizzare la festa per l’arrivo dei solitari, attesi alla spicciolata all’inizio della prossima settimana. Ristoratori e albergatori attendono il tutto esaurito e dietro le quinte si lavora ad un evento all’altezza della situazione. Dalle parti di Port Olona già si sono appostati i van delle televisioni e i giorbali dedicano ampio spazio alla manifestazione, da sempre considerata come la più dura nel suo genere.

VENDEE GLOBE, ON FIRE AND WARMING UP FOR THE PARTY
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Michel Desjoyeaux is on fire this evening, 17.5 knots is the quickest we have seen from him for a long time and he is set to keep up that pace in the building breeze.
He is at 769 miles ahead of Roland Jourdain and, although Veolia Environnement has picked up speed again, he is still losing miles. It could be 800 by tomorrow.

Brian Thompson, who since weeks pre-start, always said he relished the miles up the Atlantic, is doing a great job, making 14.3 knots average between the rankings – four hours to 18.30GMT – and 14.5 in the 1h speed gun. He is now 214 miles ahead of Dee and 260 miles behind Sam Davies who has slowed in the Doldrums to just over 6 knots.

Meanwhile in a chilly Vendée there is an air of anticipation, even if it is difficult to believe that in just a few days from now the harbour in Les Sables d’Olonne will be thronged with visitors, and that the whole town will be coming alive as the winner of the Vendée Globe crosses the finishing line.
