Louis Vuitton Trophy – Auckland – Cielo coperto e vento per il momento leggero ad Auckland, dove oggi, stando al programma definito dall’organizzazione, si dovrebbero disputare ben sette match. Si partirà infatti con il settimo volo (Emirates Team New Zealand vs Synergy, Aleph vs Azzurra, Artemis vs All4One e Team Origin vs Mascalzone Latino Audi Team). A seguire, se le condizioni meteo lo permetteranno, si recupereranno i tre match rinviati ieri: Team Origin vs Artemis, Azzurra vs Mascalzone Latino Audi Team e Synergy vs All4One.

Rispetto ai giorni passati, l’inizio delle regate è stato anticipato di mezz’ora. Già alle 9.30 (alle 21.30 italiane), infatti, potrebbe essere data la prima partenza.

13.00 – Azzurra batte Team Aleph al termine di una regata che il team italiano ha dominato dal primo all’ultimo metro. Il team italiano muove così un passo avanti in classifica, attestandosi al secondo posto.

11.50 – Il segnale preparatorio del match tra Azzurra e Aleph sarà dato alle 12.05 (le 00.05 italiane).

11.30 – Tra Synergy ed Emirates Team New Zealand la spuntano i kiwi. Peccato davvero per Karol Jablonsky, straordinario interprete delle fasi di pre partenza. A favorire i kiwi un salto di vento inatteso che li ha fatti rientrare in gara dalla sinistra. Kiwi vincitori del Round Robin, quindi, con sei vittorie e una sconfitta.

9.30 – La giornata si apre con un rinvio. Il vento non si è ancora steso sulla Waitemata Bay di Auckland.

Louis Vuitton Trophy – Auckland – La Coppa, che è stata vinta un mese fa dal team americano BMW Oracle Racing, è arrivata da poche ore ad Auckland, nel nord della Nuova Zelanda.

Questa sarà una rimpatriata per la Coppa America, che ha trascorso quasi otto anni nella sala a lei dedicata nel Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, dove era arrivata dopo la vittoria di Team New Zealand nel 1995.

Lo skipper del team vincitore, Russell Coutts, amministratore delegato di BMW Oracle Racing ha detto: “E’ opportuno portare il trofeo ad Auckland questa settimana. Gran parte della comunità della Coppa America è in città per regatare nel Louis Vuitton Trophy, incluso Mascalzone Latino Audi Team, il nostro Challenger of Record. Così, nonostante non siamo riusciti a essere presenti in questa competizione, abbiamo voluto comunque dare il nostro supporto all’evento”.

“Sono qui già da alcuni giorni, per consultarmi con i team sulla prossima edizione della Coppa America. Riportare la Coppa America in Nuova Zelanda durante questa regata, stimolerà tutti a focalizzarsi su quanto accadrà in futuro”.

Il Louis Vuitton Trophy è il risultato di una collaborazione tra Louis Vuitton e la World Sailing Teams Association, creata per organizzare regate a match race a cadenza regolare e di alto livello su barche altamente performanti.

“E’ fantastico che BMW Oracle Racing, uno dei soci fondatori della World Sailing Teams Association, dimostri il suo supporto agli altri team e a Louis Vuitton riportando la ‘Auld Mug’ in Nuova Zelanda” dice Bruno Troublè, portavoce della World Sailing Teams Association.

“Supportando questo evento, BMW Oracle Racing sta anche riconoscendo un tributo a Louis Vuitton, che ha lavorato moltissimo alla crescita della Coppa America negli ultimi 27 anni, rispettandone allo stesso tempo i suoi valori, la tradizione e la storia”.

Troublè aggiunge: “Mentre si stanno elaborando i dettagli della prossima Coppa America, le regate del Louis Vuitton Trophy si stanno dimostrando un grande campo di prova per i team”.

Otto team stanno regatando ad Auckland nel Louis Vuitton Trophy. I prossimi eventi già in calendario includono manifestazioni in Sardegna, Dubai ed Hong Kong.

La Coppa America sarà disponibile al pubblico al Voyager, il Museo Marittimo della Nuova Zelanda dalle 11.00 alle 16.00 martedì, mercoledì e giovedì di questa settimana.

AMERICA’S CUP, THE CUP IS IN NEW ZEALAND
[Louis Vuitton Trophy Press Release] The Cup, which was won one month ago by the American team BMW Oracle Racing, has been residing in its new home at the Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco. It is scheduled to arrive in Auckland on Tuesday, March 16th.

This will be a homecoming of sorts for the America’s Cup, which spent nearly eight years in the trophy room at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron following Team New Zealand’s victory in 1995.The skipper of that team, Russell Coutts, is the CEO of BMW Oracle Racing,.

“It’s appropriate that we bring the trophy to Auckland this week,” Coutts said. “Most of the America’s Cup community is in town, including Mascalzone Latino Audi Team, the team for our Challenger of Record, racing in the Louis Vuitton Trophy. So although we weren’t able to compete in this regatta, we wanted to support the event”.

“We’ve been here for a few days already, consulting with the teams about the next edition of the America’s Cup. Bringing the Cup back to New Zealand now, during this regatta, will help to get everyone excited and focussed on what happens next.”

The Louis Vuitton Trophy events are the result of a partnership between Louis Vuitton and the World Sailing Teams Association, designed to provide regular, high-level match race regattas in large and complex racing yachts.

“It’s great to have BMW Oracle Racing, one of the founding members of the World Sailing Teams Association, showing their support for the other teams by bringing the ‘Auld Mug’ back to New Zealand,” said Bruno Troublé, spokesperson for the World Sailing Teams Association.

“By supporting this event, BMW Oracle Racing is also paying tribute to Louis Vuitton, which has contributed to growing the America’s Cup so much over the last 27 years, all the while respecting its values, tradition and history.”

“While the details of the next edition of the Cup are being worked out, the Louis Vuitton Trophy regattas are a great proving ground for the teams.”

Eight teams are currently racing in Auckland for the Louis Vuitton Trophy. Further events on the calendar include regattas in La Maddalena, Italy, Dubai and Hong Kong.

The America’s Cup will be available for public viewing at Voyager, the New Zealand Maritime Museum, at the Viaduct Harbour, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week from 1100 until 1600 (1530 on Thursday). The Museum is putting on special rates of just $5 per adult, with free admission for children 14 and under.

Nulla di fatto per l’atteso match tra Mascalzone Latino Audi Team e Azzurra. Dopo il primo match, vinto a sorpresa da Aleph contro Emirates Team New Zealand, il comitato di regata ha sospeso le operazioni proprio mentre stavano per partire Team Origin e Artemis. Il vento era eccessivo per assicurare regate regolari: “Non sarebbero state regate – ha detto il Principal Race Officer, Peter Reggio – ma sopravvivenza”. Le barche, che hanno già subito molti danni, sono state riportate in porto in attesa di un calo del vento che non è mai arrivato. Solo alle 17.00 Reggio si è arreso.

Il programma del Louis Vuitton Trophy proseguirà domani con le regate del Flight 7, che vede Azzurra impegnata contro Aleph e Mascalzone Latino Audi Team contro Team Origin. A seguire si tenterà di disputare i tre match che erano in programma oggi, tra i quali l’attesissimo derby tra Mascalzone Latino Audi Team e Azzurra.

I kiwi sono ancora increduli, non solo perchè oggi hanno perso una regata, ma perché “è stata la peggior regata che abbiamo disputato da un sacco di tempo a questa parte”. Questo il laconico commento di Adam Beashell, uno degli uomini chiave del pozzetto di Emirates Team New Zealand al termine del match contro i francesi di Aleph. Lo skipper e timoniere del team, Bertrand Pacè, è uno dei migliori match racer sulla piazza, uno che conosce particolarmente bene Dean Barker, lo skipper e timoniere di Emirates Team New Zealand, in quanto è stato il suo sparring partner nella preparazione alla Coppa America del 2003 e di seguito il suo tattico.

Il match ha avuto subito un prologo positivo per i francesi, che hanno scelto di regatare a sinistra del campo di regata. Barker sceglieva invece la destra, ma al primo salto di vento veniva punito. Si trovava così al primo incrocio indietro di due lunghezze. Il secondo salto di vento era ancora a favore dei francesi, che tenevano saldamente la sinistra.

Il colpo di grazia per i kiwi è arrivato poco dopo il passaggio in boa, quando il gennaker si è strappato.

I francesi a questo punto avevano strada libera e andavano a vincere con un vantaggio di 38’’.

A seguire, scendevano in acqua Artemis di Paul Cayard (a caccia disperata di punti) e Team Origin, il super-team inglese di Ben Ainslie e Iain Percy. Durante la preparazione del match, il vento saliva fino a 25 nodi, determinando lo stop delle regate da parte del comitato di regata.

LOUIS VUITTON TROPHY, STRONG WIND ALTER ROUND ROBIN COMPLEXION
[Louis Vuitton Trophy Press Release] Strong and gusty sou-west winds forced a cancellation to the day’s competition but not before previously unbeaten Emirates Team New Zealand went down in defeat to France’s seventh-placed Aleph.

Milder weather is expected tomorrow and racing will resume with flight seven, the last of the round robin. With an earlier start scheduled, the remaining matches of today’s abandoned flight six will be squeezed into the schedule tomorrow, or on subsequent days.

Four teams crowding the top of the points table were slated to square off today. Britain’s Team Origin, placed second-equal, was circling in the start box against Sweden’s third-placed Artemis with just two minutes to the start when the race committee signaled a postponement. The Italian teams Azzurra and Mascalzone Latino Audi Team, each placed second-equal, were waiting in the wings for the third race of the day.

The Synergy Russian Sailing Team, winless in Auckland despite a good race record in Nice last November, was scheduled to race the German-French All4One, which is the other team in second-equal place.

After sending the race boats back to the dock, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron race committee, headed by American Principal Race Officer Peter “Luigi” Reggio, remained on station monitoring the weather conditions until 5.00 pm before cancelling for the day.

Emirates weather man Roger “Clouds” Badham had cautioned this morning that early strong winds would gust over acceptable limits later in the day and curtail racing but the first match started without incident in 19-20 knots from the sou-west with gusts to 23.

The race featured two old team mates, each with a good read on the foibles of the other. In 2003 before the America’s Cup in Auckland, Emirates Team New Zealand’s skipper Dean Barker trained with Aleph’s skipper Bertrand Pacé as the B-Boat helmsman. Later Pacé was Barker’s tactician.

At the five-minute gun Barker led deep into the start box, pursued closely by Pacé through a series of circles, before they broke away and lined up to start on starboard with the French boat to leeward and bow out. Barker, who wanted the right, got it, but was forced to tack away into an unfavorable shift.

The Frenchman led by two boat lengths at the first cross and continued to extend. “We wanted to play the shifts but we had to be patient,” Pacé said.

Emirates strategist Adam Beashel said afterwards “it was one of the worst races we’ve sailed in a long time.”

Beashel explained: “We were on the wrong side of the first two shifts of the first beat. Aleph did a great job sticking to their game plan and staying in the left and doing well out of that and putting a bit a pressure on us. Then, unfortunately in our gybe-set hoist, we had a little tear in the chute. It was touch and go whether it would hold”.

“Just a minute or two later it was a bit too big and the whole thing blew out and there was a little bit of a hiccup too with the pole and that ended up in the water.”

Observers rated it as a moderate to major hiccup. Emirates bowman Stuart Bettany went overboard too and joined the pole in the water as the firedrill on deck intensified. Extra crew rushed forward to retrieve Bettany, while others restrained the pole, which was still secured to the mast, to stop it sweeping aft and becoming the fourth snapped pole of the series.

Prevented by the tangle from hoisting a second spinnaker, the Kiwi team finished the run under jib and then began to steadily close with the French boat over the remaining two legs. “We fortunately picked up a little on the second beat on some shifts to the right of them, and we were able to put a bit of pressure back on, but they just made it pretty simple down the last run.”

Race One: Aleph def. Emirates Team New Zealand, 00:38 – The day belonged to Pacé as he took the fight to his former sparring partner. Barker fought for the right side and got it, helped no doubt because Pacé wanted the left. After multiple circling duels they broke away and came to the line on starboard, with Emirates Team New Zealand in the weather berth. The French boat was bow forward and Barker was quick to tack away. The Kiwis trailed into the mark on port, five boat lengths astern. Disaster struck as they trimmed their spinnaker to chase the French. The clew exploded out of the chute, taking metres of sail cloth with it and the Kiwis were forced to dump the halyard and jettison the sail, leaving their chase boat to pick up the debris. They lost about 100 metres, finishing the first run under jib and then clawed back distance on the remaining two legs to finish a very respectable 38 seconds astern.

Louis Vuitton Trophy – Auckland – Buongiorno da Auckland dove in anticipo di dodici ore rispetto all’Italia inizia una nuova settimana lavorativa. Gli equipaggi attendono di affrontarsi nel sesto volo del Round Robin, volo che comprende il derby tra Mascalzone Latino Audi Team e Azzurra, attualmente appaiati in seconda posizione con tre punti.

Le condizioni meteo sono piuttosto impegnative: sul campo di regata sono attesi venti compresi tra i venti e i venticinque nodi d’aria. Una situazione che ha obbligato il Comitato di Regata a rivedere il sistema delle penalità: verranno infatti cancellate tutte le penalità quando a doverle scontare sono barche già battute sull’acqua.

17.00 – Dopo una lunga attesa in mare, Peter “Luigi” reggio ha deciso di rinviare le regate rimanenti. Il Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland riprenderà domani a partire dalle 9.30 (21.30 italiane) con la disputa dei match del settimo volo. Slitta così con buona probabilità a mercoledì  il match tra Azzurra e Mascalzone Latino Audi Team.

12.40 – Il Comitato di Regata fa sapere che attenderà un’altra mezz’ora l’evolversi della situazione meteo: Peter “Luigi” Reggio si è comunque detto pessimista sul possibile svolgimento di altre regate. Il vento è sempre sopra i 25 nodi.

12.00 – Pochi istanti dopo essere entrati nel box di partenza, Team Origin e Artemis hanno interrotto il circling a causa del rinforzo del vento. Peter “Luigi” Reggio è stato costretto ad alzare l’Intelligenza e a posticipare l’inizio delle operazioni a tempo indeterminato.

11.03 – Team Aleph batte a sorpresa Emirates Team New Zealand. Un match chiuso dalla rottura del gennaker dei kiwi, ma che Team Aleph aveva dimostrato di meritare durante la prima bolina: dominata grazie a scelte tattiche azzeccate. I kiwi perdono così l’imbattibilità e Team Aleph lascia l’ultimo posto della classifica generale.

9.50 – Il Comitato di Regata ha comunicato un rinvio nell’inizio delle procedure di partenza a causa dell’instabilità del vento. Non ci sarà segnale di avviso prima delle 10.20.

9.20 – A partire dalle 22.00 ora italiana inizierà la diretta web in italiano: in studio Mauro Melandri e Antonio Vettese.

Louis Vuitton Trophy – Auckland – Cominciamo dalla cavalcata vittoriosa di Mascalzone Latino Audi Team. Intanto una premessa: il timoniere Gavin Brady e il tattico Morgan Larson hanno navigato in Coppa America nel 2000 su America One chiamati dal maestro Paul Cayard. Anche il timoniere di Artemis, Terry Hutchinson, era su quella barca che ha fatto tanto soffrire Luna Rossa.

Insomma, una regata che era anche una riunione di famiglia, se così si può dire. Una regata in cui Gavin ha sfoderato tutta la precisa aggressività di cui può disporre: enfant terrible, svelto nel prendere fuoco, ha un carattere duro. Ma anche una mano felice alla ruota, ed era un giorno buono. Decisiva la partenza: dopo uno scambio di cortesie nel dial up (la manovra in cui le due barche sono ferme contro vento) Mascalzone Latino Audi Team insegue l’avversario per controllarlo. Artemis tenta una strambata per liberarsi, ma il tattico Morgan Larson alza la bandiera di protesta e gli umpire gli danno ragione: strambata troppo vicina all’avversario. Correre una regata così breve con una penalità è un pesante fardello, che influenza ogni decisione. Per vincere ci sono due possibilità: una è pareggiare i conti e somministrarne una all’avversario e poi stargli davanti. L’altra è conquistare un vantaggio di almeno centocinquanta metri. Mascalzone Latino Audi Team non ha lasciato spazio agli avversari e ha chiuso la regata primo sulla linea di arrivo nonostante un pasticcio con il gennaker alla prima issata. Racconta il timoniere della barca di Vincenzo Onorato descrivendo la penalità: “Le regole sono chiare, per avere le mure a dritta devi avere le vele a dritta… e loro non le avevano. Ci hanno dato la possibilità di conquistare una penalità e noi l’abbiamo sfruttata. Dopo abbiamo manovrato per non correre rischi e siamo rimasti sulla destra del box di partenza. Il gennaker non era armato bene ed è uscito… non avevamo ancora il tangone ed eravamo un poco in ritardo”.

Azzurra invece non riesce nell’impresa di battere Emirates Team New Zealand e accomodarsi a pari punti in testa alla classifica. Ci era riuscita a Nizza, per due volte di seguito nella finale in una umida mattina di bonaccia e nebbia di fronte al lungomare, non riesce a Auckland. Anzi, la barca italiana è sempre stata molto lontana dagli avversari, che l’hanno dominata in partenza e lungo il percorso. La scelta fondamentale è stata quella iniziale: da che parte del campo cercare il vento migliore. Volevano tutti la sinistra, kiwi e azzurri. Ma l’ha ottenuta Dean Barker usando tutta la energie di cui può disporre. La regata, in pratica, si è chiusa lì, nei pochi minuti della partenza e non si è mai riaperta. La situazione in classifica per Azzurra cambia radicalmente, perché deve lasciare il secondo posto e si ritrova a tre punti assieme ad altri ormai pericolosi avversari. Dice Gabriele Bruni, fratello del timoniere Francesco che naviga con il ruolo di stratega, ovvero l’uomo che sale sull’albero in cerca del vento: “La chiamata era per il pin end (ovvero il lato sinistro della linea di partenza, ndr) ma l’hanno conquistato loro. Abbiamo iniziato a navigare a destra del campo in una situazione in cui era sempre più difficile tornare. Speravamo in una rotazione del vento che non è mai arrivata”. Replica Francesco: “Una giornata negativa, non sono riuscito a dare a Tommaso la sinistra che mi chiedeva in partenza, poi, lungo la bolina, abbiamo sperato che il vento tornasse un po’ ma non è mai successo. Adesso dobbiamo guardare avanti”.

Le altre regate del giorno vedono prevalere senza troppe difficoltà Team Origin nei confronti dei russi di Synergy e All4One ai danni di Aleph.

Mancano due soli giorni alla conclusione del Round Robin e comincia a diventare importante conquistare punti, anche se non determinante per il passaggio alla fase eliminatoria successiva. I neozelandesi sono imbattuti e dietro di loro ci sono quattro barche con tre punti. Nel programma del sesto volo l’incontro diretto tra Azzurra e Mascalzone Latino Audi Team, determinante per la classifica. Tra gli equipaggi dei due team c’è grande amicizia… ma i doveri di classifica faranno la loro parte in mare.

Le regate
Emirates Team New Zealand batte Azzurra per 42”
Per Azzurra battere Emirates Team New Zealand era l’opportunità per portarsi a pari punti in testa alla classifica del Trophy. Occasione importante, raggiungibile visto che a Nizza gli italiani erano riusciti a battere i kiwi nella finale in due regate consecutive. Alla partenza i kiwi scelgono di partire in boa, chiamata anche a bordo della barca italiana, e proseguono navigando sulla sinistra del campo in attesa di un consistente salto di vento. Azzurra insiste a destra, tra le due barche si produce una separazione di 1000 metri e quando le due barche incrociano quasi al termine della bolina ha otto lunghezze di ritardo. Dean Barker e il suo equipaggio offrono ad Azzurra una occasione importante quando rompono il tangone all’inizio della prima poppa e sono costretti a navigare con il gennaker murato sulla prua della barca. Azzurra con il tangone è leggermente più veloce ma il vantaggio dei neozelandesi è confortevole e agli italiani non resta che inseguire fino all’arrivo che tagliano con 42 secondi di ritardo. Dopo l’arrivo il gennaker di Azzurra finisce in acqua durante la manovra di ammainata.

Mascalzone Latino Audi Team batte Artemis per 1’ 03”
Le manovre del prepartenza vedono Artemis, timonata da Terry Hutchinsons, penalizzata per una strambata troppo vicina. Cayard se la prende e afferma: “Non era un errore” e Brady la vede diversamente: “Le regole sono precise e noi abbiamo gli Umpire che ci osservano, Cayard non può dire che la sua barca era mure a dritta perché le vele ancora non erano da quella parte”. Artemis parte a sinistra controllando la prima bolina e ha condotto con una lunghezza di vantaggio fino alla prima boa di bolina. Dopo l’issata, le due barche erano vicinissime, il gennaker di Mascalzone Latino Audi Team si libera dal moschettone e la barca italiana perde cinque lunghezze. Brady insegue e dopo una seconda bolina molto bella esce dalla boa a ridosso dell’avversario. Le due barche navigano appaiate tardando l’issata e Mascalzone Latino Audi Team conquista l’interno. Alla successiva strambata è in testa e taglia l’arrivo per primo. Artemis è dietro di pochi secondi ma deve completare la penalità girando attorno alla boa.

LOUIS VUITTON TROPHY, HUNGRY PACK FIGHTS FOR TOP PLACE
[Louis Vuitton Trophy Press Release] With just two days of racing remaining before the end of the round robin, a hungry pack of four teams is in equal second place, each with three points and fighting to catch the thus-far unbeatable Kiwis. They are All4One, representing Germany and France, Azzurra and Mascalzone Latino Audi Team from Italy and the British-based Team Origin.

Conditions were ideal for racing with almost flat water and a southerly breeze that ranged from 12 to 20 knots with some big shifts and puffs. Peter Reggio’s race committee from the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron got off four races with time to spare even after pauses for boat repairs and commercial shipping.

Emirates got an extra share of the limelight today when it hosted All Black rugby football star Dan Carter as 18th man, and when it broke a spinnaker pole during a hoist, the third fracture in the regatta in as many days. The Kiwis shrugged it off, losing only a few seconds in their match against Azzurra and setting their spinnaker without a pole.

Carter put in a lot of extra time comparing rugby to sailing action for the media microphones and signing autographs for the crowd that gathered in the Louis Vuitton Village in Market Square when he came ashore. His verdict? He was impressed by the teamwork and amazed at the intensity of the sounds of a Cup boat complaining under full load.

Speaking of the penalty against Artemis, Gavin Brady, the Kiwi skipper of Mascalzone Latino Audi Team. “It (the penalty) was out there for the taking and it’s nice that it landed on our plate!”

Brady said that about 35 seconds was needed on the short courses of the Louis Vuitton Trophy for a team to exonerate itself with a penalty turn. The other boat had only to stay close to guarantee a win. After the start and while they were racing it was vital not to be lured into a penalty situation that would cancel the first.

“You’ve got to get on the right hand side of them and get starboard and it’s hard for the umpires to give you a penalty,” he said. “It was simple for us after that. We just had to watch for all the traps. I could see Terry and Paul looking back. They made it pretty clear when they were both looking back at me like hawks.”

Race One: All4One def. Aleph, 01:06 – The breeze was 14 knots from the south, sou-west as the all-French team of Aleph met the German/French All4One. After an intense pre-start in which Bertrand Pacé at the wheel of Aleph attempted to get a hook on his opponent, it was the combined team steered by Frenchman Sébastien Col that grabbed control of the right as the boats split at the start. On the first cross All4One led narrowly and Aleph had to duck but that was as close as she got. Bolstered by the local knowledge of her Kiwi tactician John Cutler, All4One extended her control. “Our start strategy was to stay to the right of our opponent but the first thing we wanted was to be going full speed when the gun went,” Cutler said. “We started on port which was the lifted tack. That took a bit of pressure off us. We just had to wait for the next shift to come our way. When we crossed, Sébastien did a very nice job on a slam dunk on Bertrand Pacé and we were again on a very nice shift. The leader had the option to sail on the wind shifts and the trailing boat really didn’t have a lot of choice.” With yesterday’s Umpire decision, penalising them one point, Aleph shares the bottom of the table with zero points.

Race Two: Emirates Team New Zealand def. Azzurra, 00:42 – This was the opportunity for Italy’s Azzurra team skippered by Francesco Bruni to level the points lead with Emirates Team New Zealand if they won. Dean Barker’s host team offered the Italians a slender opportunity when they broke their spinnaker pole at the first weather mark but it was still a one-sided match. Riding as 18th man on Emirates Team New Zealand, New Zealand rugby star player Dan Carter got a close up view of Barker’s surgical tactics before the start. Barker wanted the left and fought for it. The Kiwis got under the transom of the Italian boat to control them before the gun, then headed out to the left at speed while Bruni could only tack away and go right. They were 1,000 metres apart on the short harbour course before the Italians came back to trail by eight boat lengths at the first mark. The Kiwis showed a crack in their impeccable crew work as the spinnaker pole end dropped overboard at the hoist and broke as it wrapped around the shrouds. But the chute went up as planned and they sailed both runs with the spinnaker clipped to the bow. The finish delta was 42 seconds and the Azzurra team drowned their spinnaker, if not their disappointment, when they trawled it overboard while dropping after the finish.

Race Three: Team Origin def. Synergy Russian Sailing team, 01:18 – Karol Jablonski, Polish skipper of the Russian boat, has a reputation as a tenacious and sometimes unconventional starter, as Ben Ainslie and the British Team Origin crew were reminded today. Jablonski had the favoured starboard tack entry and after losing a preliminary pre-start skirmish he was able to grab control and start where he wanted on the left and force Ainslie away. The expected left shift never really materialized and the British boat led when they first closed tacks. Jablonski kept in touch around the first two legs and the Russians only trailed by four boat lengths at the end of the first run. Problems getting the spinnaker down cost them heavily and the British boat had a 400 metre margin at the finish.

Race Four: Artemis def. Mascalzone Latino Audi, 01:03 – The pre-start struggle saw Paul Cayard’s Artemis, steered by Terry Hutchinson, penalized for gybing too close. Cayard was blunt. “It was not, in my opinion, a foul!” Brady, steering Mascalzone Latino Audi, saw it differently. “In this game the rules are pretty strict and we’ve got umpires watching us. He couldn’t quite get his boat onto starboard. He was desperately trying to but the rules of sailing say the sail has to be set and he couldn’t get his sail through (in time).” Artemis led off the line to control the first beat and was leading by less than a boat length at the top mark until a very untidy situation on Mascalzone Latino Audi when the spinnaker flew loose from the tack. Brady’s boat lost five boat lengths but pulled it back on the subsequent legs to overtake Artemis on the last run, surviving an Artemis protest as they sailed through the Swedish boat’s lee. They came to the line together with Mascalzone Latino Audi one length clear ahead. The finish delta after the Artemis penalty turn stretched out to 1:03.

Louis Vuitton Trophy – Auckland – Domenica di maratona e Louis Vuitton Trophy ad Auckland. La città si è messa in moto molto presto e i cittadini hanno preso di assalto il lungomare, teatro della partenza della gara podistica. Per quanto riguarda il Louis Vuitton Trophy, invece, va sottolineata la puntuale uscita degli equipaggi che a partire dalle 10.00 dovrebbero affrontarsi nel primo match della quinta giornata: All4One e Team Aleph. A seguire il duello del giorno, tra Azzurra ed Emirates Team New Zealand.

15.30 – Match combattutissimo tra Mascalzone Latino Audi Team e Artemis. Nonostante la sicurezza di una penalità inflitta all’avversario durante le fasi di pre-partenza, l’equipaggio di Gavin Brady è andato a riprendere Artemis che si era portato al comando e dopo aver battagliato durante il secondo lato di poppa ha vinto la regata tagliando per primo la linea di arrivo. Grazie a questo successo Mascalzone Latino ha tre punti e raggiunge Azzurra, All4One e Team Origin.

14.00 – Team Origin domina il match contro i russi di Synergy. Per l’equipaggio di Karol Jablonsky, mai entrato in regata, arriva la quinta sconfitta consecutiva, mentre per i britannici arriva un punto che li porta alla pari con Azzurra e All4One.

12.30 – Emirates Team New Zealand coglie il quinto punto del suo Louis Vuitton Trophy. I padroni di casa hanno egemonizzato Azzurra, dominando la regata dal primo all’ultimo metro. Partiti sulla sinistra i kiwi hanno agganciato il salto giusto quasi subito e hanno accumulato un vantaggio importante, tale da permettere a Dean Barker e compagni di “sopravvivere” alla rottura del tangone avvenuta durante il primo lato di poppa.

11.25 – Il preparatorio del match tra Azzurra e Emirates Team New Zealand è previsto per le 11.40. A bordo di una delle barche sono in corso alcuni lavori di riparazione.

10.45 – All4One batte Team Aleph al termine di una regata che non ha avuto storia: presa la testa del match nel corso della prima bolina, Jochen Schuemann e John Cutler hanno esteso la propria leadership, metro dopo metro. Aleph resta a zero e All4One si porta a quota tre, raggiungendo Azzurra.

10.12 – E’ iniziato il primo match odierno: split start tra All4One, che va a destra, e Team Aleph, che va a sinistra.

Louis Vuitton Trophy – Auckland – Ricordiamo a tutti gli appasionati che, a partire dalle 21.30 di questa sera, Mauro Melandri e Antonio Vettese commenteranno in diretta da Auckland le regate valide per la settima giornata del Louis Vuitton Trophy.
