Transat Jacques Vabre – Le Havre – Mancano davvero poche ore all’inizio della Transat Jacques Vabre – la partenza verrà data alle 13 di domenica – regata transoceanica che unisce Le Havre a Puerto Limon in Costarica e da quest’anno offre due percorsi diversi per i monoscafi Open 60 e i multiscafi Multi 50. I primi, salutata Le Havre e raggiunto il Caribe, dovranno semplicemente lasciare la Repubblica Domenica a dritta, mentre i secondi allungheranno di quasi 300 miglia puntando verso Barbados: l’obiettivo è quello di avere un arrivo più o meno sincronizzato tra le differenti tipologie di imbarcazioni.

Al via ci sarà un nutrito gruppo di IMOCA 60 – al momento se ne contano 14, tutti ormeggiati lungo la stessa banchina di Le Havre – portati da talenti come Alex Thompson, Armel Le Cléac’h, Michel Desjoyeaux, Jérémie Beyou, Vincent Riou, Samantha Davies, Marc Thircelin e Roland Jourdain e ben 7 Multi 5o, affidati a velisti del calibro di Jean Le Cam, Frank-Yves Escoffier e Anne Casaneuve.

Da quest’anno gli equipaggi avranno la facoltà di nascondere la propria posizione per 24 ore (Furtive Mode), rendendosi invisibili agli occhi degli avversari: un’opportunità mutuata dalla Volvo Ocean Race, dove lo Stealth Mode è stato utilizzato più volte per proteggere le scelte tattiche più delicate.

TRANSAT JACQUES VABRE, A NEW COURSE, A NEW CHOICE, NEW CHALLENGES
[Transat Jacques Vabre Press Releae] Se a new course for the ninth edition of the Transat Jacques Vabre presents a whole new set of challenges for the 14 IMOCA Open 60 teams and the six Multi 50 crews who will start Sunday. The IMOCA Open 60 fleet leave the island of the Dominican Republic to starboard en route to the finish off Puerto Limon which sets them a theoretical course distance of 4730 miles, while the Multi 50 class sail an extra 370 miles, making a total of 5050 miles as they pass south of Barbados. The idea is that the monohulls and the multis should finish at around the same time.

This Transatlantic route appears much more of a direct, straight line route, removing the challenge of the Doldrums and the ‘corner’ of Cape Finisterre but instead the final 12-1300 miles could, under certain circumstances, could offer their own Doldrums. Leggi tutto »

ISAF Rolex World Sailors of the Year – Busan – L’ISAF ha ricevuto i report tramite i quali è stata in grado di definire i nominati in vista del prossimo importante appuntamento stagionale: il Rolex World Sailors of the Year. Ricordiamo che il periodo soggetto a valutazione era quello compreso tra l’1 settembre 2008 e il 31 agosto 2009.

I nomi dei candidati alla vittoria dell’importante riconoscimento sono, in campo femminile, la navigatrice oceanica Sam Davies, che quest’anno ha portato a termine la sua prima Vendée Globe, la velista disabile Hilary Lister, prima donna con problemi motori a circumnavigare la Gran Bretagna in solitario, e le olimpioniche Blanca Manchon e Anna Tunnicliffe. In campo maschile, invece, Pascal Bidegorry, detentore con Banque Populare V del nuovo record sulla traversata dell’Atlantico, il vincitore della Vendée Globe Michel Desjoyeaux, il talento britannico Paul Goodison, il vincitore della Volvo Ocean Race Torben Grael e l’olimpionico australiano Nathan Outteridge.

I nomi dei vincitori verranno svelati a Busan, in Corea, il 10 novembre 2009.

La Solitaire du Figaro – Dingle – Si è aperta con un fuori programma la mattinata dei solitari della Figaro. La barca stampa si è portato in mezzo alla flotta per documentare da vicino l’avanzare dei protagonisti verso il Fastnet. Un avanzare che vede alla guida del gruppo Frederic Duthil, Michel Desjoyeaux e Francois Gabart. Una leadership utile più al morale che alla classifica, visto che il gruppo segue compatto nell’arco di 5 miglia.

Sino ad ora le scelte tattiche sono state praticamente ininfluenti. La brezza ha soffiato da ovest-sudovet tra i 10 e i 15 nodi, permettendo una rapida discesa del Mare Celtico. Le cose però cambieranno nelle prossime ore, con l’approssimarsi di un’alta pressione che renderà il vento debole e instabile. Tutto ciò, comunque, dovrebbe avvenire con una certa gradualità e i solitari, lasciato alle spalle Wolf Rock, dovrebbero iniziare la dificile navigazione Seven Stones con condizioni ancora favorevoli.

Lo sa bene Nicolas Lunven che da bordo di CGPI, leader della classifica generale, fa sapere: “Sono contento di aver scelto questa rotta. La flotta non è impacchettata: siamo tutti insieme ma la separazione laterale è notevole. Ho scelto di navigare a nord per poter orzare quando il vento calerà e questa mattina mi sono trovato davanti il gruppo di testa. Ho avuto l’impressione di essere più veloce e questo è un buon segno. La prossima fase sembra abbastanza complicata, non vedo l’ora di ricevere le carte meteo per capire cosa sta succedendo”.

LA SOLITAIRE DU FIGARO, BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING
[La Solitaire du Figaro Press Release] It isn’t often that the Race Office drops in on the fleet in the middle of an offshore yacht race, but that was the case this afternoon when the chartered jet carrying the whole circus of organizers and race officials of La Solitaire du Figaro were able to buzz 52 very surprised skippers mid-Irish Sea. The accompanying journalists will be able to write with the authority of first hand experience that at midday the fleet were making steady progress under spinnaker, on calm seas and with good visibility, on their way to Land’s End and their next mark of the course, Wolf Rock. The 16.00 position report shows Frédéric Duthil (BBox Bouygues Telecom), Michel Desjoyeaux (Foncia) and François Gabart (Espoir Région Bretagne) olding the top three places, but with the bulk of the fleet within 5 miles of the leaders. La Solitaire du Figaro – Dingle – Dopo tre partenze caratterizzate dal vento leggero, i solitari della Figaro hanno salutato Dingle verso le 12.00 di oggi sfruttando una brezza da sudovest sui 16-17 nodi. Ultimo traguardo di queta 40ma edizione sarà Dieppe, ma per raggiungerlo bisognerà prima percorerre 511 miglia e doppiare il Fastnet, appuntamento tra i più classici di ogni Solitaire che si rispetti.

Anche oggi la partenza si è rivelata uno dei momenti più delicati, al punto da obbligare il Comitato di Regata ad un richiamo generale. Tensione palpabile, dovuta alla delicata situazione di classifica che in meno di un’ora racchiude ben 15 timonieri. Nicolas Lunven su CGPI ha un margine di poco inferiore ai 5 minuti su Generali di Yann Eliés che prima del via ha dichiarato: “Mi sento un predatore, affamato, iper motivato. Darò tutto di qui alla fine e spero di mantenere un pizzico di lucidità per la parte conclusiva, quando sarà impossibile contare su forze fisiche residue”.

Tra chi crede ancora nella vittoria c’è anche Michel Desjoyeaux, ottavo su Foncia: “Scorrerà il sangue, con così tanti skipper vicini. Chi segue, poi, non ha nulla da perdere e potrà giocarsi il tutto per tutto. Gli unici che hanno da perdere saranno i leader”.

Intanto, per la cronaca va raccontato che a scattare veloce sulla linea è stato ancora una volta Thierry Chabagny su Suzuki Automobiles e con lui Gildas Mahé su Banque Populaire. Un vantaggio concretizzatosi nel corso delle prime tre miglia, come sempre percorse di bolina verso la boa di Radio France. Il primo a doppiarla è stato Mahé, che ha quindi vissuti da leader i primi 15  minuti di una tappa che si annuncia lunga 3 giorni e mezzo.

[La Solitaire du Figaro Press Release] It came very close to running like clockwork in Dingle Bay today, for the start of the fourth and final leg of this year’s Solitaire du Figaro. The promised wind settled in briskly this morning, and even moderated to a more manageable 16 or 17 knots by the scheduled 12.00 (local time) start, though the south-westerly direction kicked up enough of a sea to give the numerous spectator boats an authentic if slightly uncomfortable nautical experience. After a general recall at the first attempt, the 52 boat fleet got away cleanly at 12.14 precisely, and are now flying down the Irish coast on their way to the next mark of the course, the Fastnet Rock. La Solitaire du Figaro – Dinlge – Dopo una prima notte spesa cercando di districarsi tra trappole e ostacoli – in alcuni casi ricorrendo al più classico dei tuffi – i solitari della Figaro si sono spinti lungo la risalita della costa bretone, seguendo la scia di Foncia a Bostik. Michele Desjoyeaux e Charles Caudrelier-Benac hanno fatto valere l’ottima conoscenza del percorso e si sono avvantaggiati sugli avversari, lanciandosi per primi verso il salto a ovest.

A tenere il loro passo, doppiando in terza posizione la boa di Cap Caval, è stato un altro eroe locale: Erwan Tabarly, skipper di Athema.

Gli inseguitori, intanto, cercano di mantenere alto il livello di guardia in vista dell’insidioso attraversamento del Canale della Manica, tappa obbligata per spingersi verso Dingle. A dimostrazione di ciò parlano i distacchi minimi tra le varie imbarcazioni: Nicolas Lunven, leader della gaduatoria generale su CGPI, è ben oltre la decima posizione, ma è staccato di poco più di un miglio dai battistrada. Davanti a lui, di un niente, il secondo assoluto Yann Eliés a bordo di Generali.

FIRST NIGHT OF THIRD LEG, LOCAL KNOWLEDGE PAYS
[La Solitaire Du Figaro Press Release] After a first night spent dodging all manner of traps and obstacles, it would seem this third leg of the 2009 edition of La Solitaire is so far living up to its billing as the most tactical yet. The calm conditions of the start gave way to a night requiring full attention on every skippers’ part, as they made their way along the Breton coast towards the final mark of the course before the finish line in Dingle, the Cap Caval bouy off Penmarc’h Point, at the south-western end of Brittany.

With plenty of islands and other rocky hazards to dodge, local knowledge was at a premium, and it was Port La Foret denizens Michel Desjoyeaux (Foncia) and Charles Caudrelier-Benac (Bostik), sailing on their own back doorsteps, who passed the mark seconds apart this morning before heading neck-and-neck into the Western Approaches. La Solitaire du Figaro – St. Gilles Croix-de-Vie – Una partenza ancora una volta tranquilla, quella che ha visto i solitari della igaro prendere il largo per la terza tappa. Poca aria, ma sguardi concentrati verso quella che i veterani hanno già letto come la frazione decisiva di questa edizione.

Da St. Gilles Croi-de-Vie a Dingle, in Irlanda, il salto è di quelli seri e le miglia sono quasi 500. Tappa difficile, sia dal punto di vista del meteo, sia da quello tattico: una lunga risalita lungo le coste della Britannia e poi l’attraversamento della Manica.

Vento leggero per il via, intanto, davanti a rive affollate di appassionati che in Francia seguono questa grande classica con un’attenzione paragonabile a quella riservata al Tour.

Due skipper, Nicolas Bérenger e Thierry Chabagny, sono stati richiamati per essere partiti in anticipo, mentre Laurent Pellecuer scattava rapidissimo proprio sul segnale di partenza. Dopo circa 45 minuti di navigazione, a passare la prima boa al comando è stato Fredric Duthil su BBox Boujges Telecom, seguito da Jeremie Beyou e da Armel Le Cléac’h.

[La Solitaire du Figaro Press Release] The third leg of the 40th Anniversary edition of La Solitaire du Figaro got under way as scheduled at 13.00 this afternoon, a complex 485 mile passage between St. Gilles Croix-de-Vie in France’s Vendée region across to Dingle on the west coast of Ireland. Once again it was a gentle start, with 5 or 6 knots of westerly breeze under cloudless blue skies and on the flattest of seas. The mood among the 52 skippers is much more intense however, with the Figaro veterans relishing the prospect of a classic leg full of twists and turns, and those ranked further down the fleet in attacking mood, seeking every opportunity to take big risks and reap bigger rewards. La Solitaire du Figaro – Lorient – 55 iscritti, 3 stranieri, 15 debuttanti sono i numeri della 40ma edizione della Solitaire du Figaro. Un evento che gli appasionati non vorranno certo perdere, visto che al via saranno presenti ben 6 skipper che in passato si sono cavati la soddisfazione della vittoria, come spiega Jacques Caraes, direttore della regata: “Per il suo quarantesimo compleanno, la ‘beautiful dame’ si presenterà in forma smagliante con una entry list a dir poco leggendaria. E non parlo solo dei 6 vincitori del passato, ma anche di altri skipper che hanno le carte in regola per ben figurare, come Gildas Morvan e Yann Eliés”.

Tra i big al via ci saranno il vincitore della Vendée Globe Michel Desjoyeaux (Foncia), per lui tre successi nella Solitaire, Armel Le Cléac’h (Brit Air), Jeremy Beyou, Nicolas Troussel (Credit Mutuel de Bretagne), Eric Drouglazet (Luisina) e Charles Caudrelier Benac (Bostik).

Articolata lungo un percorso che muovendo da Lorient porterà i solitari a Dieppe passando per La Coruna, Saint Gille Croix de Vie e Dingle, la prossima Solitaire, regata per uomini duri fatta di privazioni e fatica, non vedrà al via skipper italiani. Pietro D’Alì, infatti, premiato in passato come miglior debuttante e unico straniero ad aver vinto una tappa della regata, ha dovuto dare forfait nonostante avesse la barca pronta in cantiere. La causa? La mancanza di sponsor, come spiegato dallo stesso D’Alì in un’intervista rilasciata qualche settimana fa a Zerogradinord.it.

Vendée Globe  - Port La Foret - Come annunciato nel messaggio trasmesso agli skipper impegnati nella regata virtuale, Michel Desjoyeaux, dominatore della Vendée Globe, è determinato a prendere parte alla prossima edizione della manifestazione digitale.

Lo skipper di Foncia, ad appena tre settimane dal completamento del giro del mondo, ha già iniziato a pianificare la propria partecipazione grazie a un meeting molto particolare organizzato dal giornale L’Equipe per la giornata odierna. Prima di partire per un meritato periodo di riposo in una ignota località tropicale, Desjoyeaux ha infatti incontrato Hughes Fournier, skipper di Inderweltsein, lo scafo vincitore della Vendée Globe virtuale.

Dopo aver visitato Foncia, in secca per essere sottoposto a una serie di controlli e piccole modifiche, Hughes ha dato la prima lezione di navigazione virtuale a Michel, definito “uno studente molto abile” dallo specialista della vela digitale. Prima di salutarsi, i due hanno parlato dei programmi di Desjoyeaux che, al rientro delle ferie, inizierà a prepararsi per il Grand Prix Petit Navire e la Transat Jacques Vabre. Inoltre, il Professore ha messo in calendario anche la partecipazione alla Solitaire du Figaro, il rally per solitari previsto per l’inizio di agosto,

VENDEE GLOBE, TWO WINNERS COMPARED
[Source Sebastien Destremau] As announced in his message to Virtual Regatta’s players, Michel Desjoyeaux fully intends to participate in the next Virtual Vendée Globe.
Foncia’s Skipper, just three weeks after completing his marathon around the world, has already started to work on the subject at a special meeting just held by L’Equipe Magazine to be published today Saturday.

Before taking off to the warm waters of the destination under the sun for a well deserved vacation, the Vendee Globe’s heroes has met last Monday with the winner of the Virtual Vendée Globe Hughes Fournier Skipper of Inderweltsein.

After visiting Foncia, Hughes gave a first virtual sailing lesson in Michel virtual who “is a quick learner” he said. Foncia is now in the shed to begin checks, repairs and some minor changes before she will be ready for the Grand Prix Petit Navire, the SNSM Record and the Transat Jacques Vabre at the end of the year. The Professor’s program for 2009 is already fully booked with also a participation in the Course du Figaro solo in August.

Vendée Globe - Les Sables d’Olonne – Percorrendo le 28.303 miglia del percorso alla meia di 13.2 nodi, Michel Desjoyeaux, oltre a conquistare il secondo successo personale nella Vendée Globe, ne ha migliorato il record di 3 giorni, 7 ore e 39 secondi.

Spinto da una brezza sui venti nodi, lo skipper di Foncia ha tagliato la linea di arrivo domenica 1 febbraio alle 15.11 GMT, dopo 84 giorni, 3 ore e 9 minuti di navigazione. Ad accogliere il solitario francese, tornato a Les Sables d’Olonne poche ore dopo la partenza per riparare un’avaria all’impianto elettrico e ripartito con notevole ritardo rispetto al gruppo di testa, migliaia di spettatori e centinaia di barche.

“E’ incredibile. A poche miglia dall’arrivo è uscito il sole e l’atmosfera si è fatta magica. Avevo già vissuto tutto ciò otto anni fa, ma la sensazione che si prova nell’essere qui è assolutamente incredibile – ha spiegato un commosso Desjoyeaux, che già aveva vinto la regata nel 2000-2001 su PRB – Non mi sono mai preoccupato per il fatto di essere ripartito e di dover recuperare terreno: la regata l’avevo già vinta prima di partire, grazie alle scelte fatte, al team che mi ha supportato e all’esperienza su cui posso contare”.

In mare restano ancora tutti gli altri. Veolia Environnement, vessato dai problemi al bulbo, è secondo ma ha subito il ritorno di Brit Air. Armel Le Cléac’h, potendo contare su un abbuono di 11 ore, spera di poter far sua la piazza d’onore, ma in questo gioco da solitari, la speranza vera del velista francese è quella di conquistare il secondo gradino del podio sull’acqua.

HISTORIC SECOND VENDEE GLOBE VICTORY FOR DESJOYEAUX
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Sailing more than 28,303 miles, averaging around 13.2 knots, French solo skipper Michel Desjoyeaux has shattered the Vendée Globe race record today by 3 days 7 hours and 39 seconds on his way to becoming the first skipper ever to win the solo non stop around the world race twice.

The course is effectively 1150 miles longer than in 2004 when after winning the race in 2000-1 on PRB, eclipsing the young emerging British skipper Ellen MacArthur by 1 day 28 minutes, Desjoyeaux joined the 30 strong field for this race, the biggest entry ever for a round the world race in sailing history, as one of the clear favourites.

After a successful odyssey into big racing multihulls, Desjoyeaux returned to monohulls in 2007 when he won the highly competitive Solitaire du Figaro, going on to win the Transat Vabre in late 2007 on his return to the IMOCA Open 60 class in which the Vendée Globe.

Desjoyeaux crossed the finish on Sunday 1st February at 15.11 GMT , after 84 days 03 hours 09 minutes of racing. Foncia completed the race in twenty knots of breeze under sunny skies, greeted by a massive armada of spectator boats before beking warmly welcomed by huge crowds who gathered along the waterfront and harbour area of Les Sables d’Olonne, where the race departed at 12.02 GMT November 9th 2008.

Desjoueaux said: “It’s incredible, this little ray of sunshine is making it magical. I may have done it eight years ago, but it’s still incredible. I can’t take it in. I have been two months trying to understand what’s going on, how I’m doing it and so here I’m just enjoying it then we’ll think about it afterwards. I never really worried about being behind. Vendée Globe – Oceano Atlantico – Passato Cape Finisterre, Michel Desjoyeaux è tornato a solcare le acque del Golfo di Biscaglia. Lo skipper di Foncia si prepare a vivere quella che, almeno per il momento, sarà la sua ultima giornata in mare: tutto dipenderà da quanto riuscirà a camminare. Sino a poche ore fa, infatti, l’IMOCA 60 del leader volava a 16-17 nodi mentre ora ha rallentato.

Lo shore team di Desjoyeaux, che ha visto il suo skipper per l’ultima quando tornò a Les Sables d’Olonne per risolvere un problema elettrico poche ore dopo essere partito, lo attende per festeggiarlo, al pari del pubblico, giunto in massa, approfittando del concomitante week end.

Alle sue spalle, Rolnd Jourdain teme di avere ormai perso il secondo posto. Veolia Environnement è in rotta verso Sao Miguel nelle Azzorre, dove spera di arrivare prima del calar delle tenebre per potersi accertare del danno subito alla deriva della sua barca. A incalzarlo è Armel Le Cléac’h. Lo skipper di Brit Air, appena scappato dalla stretta dell’alta pressione tipica delle Azzorre, ha da recuperare oltre 400 miglia, ma sa di poter contare su un abbuono di 11 ore.

Vicini sia sull’acqua che nelle performance sono Sam Davies e Marc Guillemot, quarta e quinto in classifica generale a oltre 2500 miglia dalla vetta. Separati da una manciata di miglia, i due continuano la loro risalita verso Les Sables d’Olonne. Lo skipper di Safran ancora non ha perso le speranze di poter salire podio. Per il salvataggio di Yann Eliés, infatti, gli sono state riconosciute 82 ore di abbuono.

A TIME TO SAVOUR
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Keeping thoughts of what seems an inevitable and comprehensive victory at bay Michel Desjoyeaux has had no let up during a breezy Friday night which has seen Foncia still posting high average speeds passing Cape Finisterre. Desjoyeaux was making 16-17 knots during the middle part of yesterday evening and has slowed little through the night.

Today will be the final day at sea for Desjoyeaux before he reaches the coast of Vendée and the leader has pledged to have a quiet day as he concentrates on the final miles. Meanwhile his shore team are also going through the last hours of the race, savouring those precious moments. From the boat builders to the technical support team and all those helping him psychologically from a distance, the back room team have played a vital role in helping Desjoyeaux to victory.

The most obvious reminder was when 200 miles into the race, Jean-Paul Roux, the team manager at Mer Agitée, Desjoyeaux’s company which runs his projects, received a call from the skipper announcing that he was returning to Les Sables d’Olonne with an electrical problem following a leak in his ballast tank. Per il momento la barca viene tenuta dritta dai ballast di poppa e prua, ma il francese fa sapere che, a causa delle condizioni del mare, è impossibilitato ad immergersi per constatare l’entità del danno. La sua rotta non è cambiata, prosegue per Les Sables d’Olonne a circa 888,5 miglia da Michel Desjoyeaux e spera che le condizioni metereologiche non volgano al peggio. In tal caso, Jourdain farà prua verso le Azzorre, distanti circa 600 miglia.

Veolia Environnement è in forte ritardo nei confronti di Foncia, ormai lanciato verso una meritata affermazione, anche se disavventure come quella capitata a Roland Jourdain sono sempre in agguato. Per Jourdain comincia a materializzarsi l’incubo Armel Le Cléac’h. Lo skipper di Brit Air è lontano meno di 400 miglia dall’avversario e ha per giunta un abbuono di 11 ore da calcolare dopo l’arrivo. VEOLIA ENVIRONNEMENT HAS LOST HER KEEL BULB
[Vendée Globe Press Release] It has been confirmed by Roland Jourdain’s team that Veolia Environnement has lost her keel bulb.

The boat is being kept as stable as possible with the ballast in the bow and in the middle of with, the centre of effort of the sailplan kept as low as possible. It is still unknown exactly where the damage begins, as it may be the joint between the bulb and keel or higher on the keel blade.

For the moment it is out of the question to heel the boat over to see as this would risk causing the IMOCA Open 60 to capsize. It is also impossible for Jourdain to risk diving because of the sea state.

The first reaction was to continue to Les Sables d’Olonne, but it is understood that the skipper will not take any undue risk. For the moment he does not need to change course as the Azores are 600 miles ahead on his route. Vendée Globe - Atlantic Ocean - The highlights of the eleventh Vendée Globe’s week. Michel Desjoyeaux is close to the victory. Foncia leads by more than 769 miles over Veolia Environnement. The others are very far from the head of the race: Armel Le Cléac’h, third, is more than 1000 miles from Desjoyeaux.

Vendée Globe - Oceano Atlantico - Non camminava così veloce da tanto tempo Michel Desjoyeaux. Annusata l’aria di casa, lo skipper di Foncia è tornato a schiacciare il piede sul pedale e ha fatto segnare i 17.5 nodi di media nel corso degli ultimi rilevamenti. Roland Jourdain, eclissatosi sin dal momento dell’ingresso in Oceano Atlantico, è ora un puntino nella scia di Desjoyeaux e attende di applaudirne il successo. Quando al battistrada mancano poco più di 1200 miglia all’arrivo, Veolia Environnement è staccato di 769 miglia dal battistrada ed è ormai rassegnato.

Sempre terzo Armel Le Cléac’h, impegnato su Brit Air nel trascorrere i giorni che lo separano dall’arrivo a Les Sable d’Olonne, dove, con ogni probabilità, farà sua la terza piazza.

Brian Thompson, che sin dalla partenza aveva dichiarato di gradire le condizioni tipiche dell’Atlantico, sta viaggiando a una media di 14.3 nodi ed è a sole 180 miglia da Marc Guillemot (Safran), tornato in quinta posizione dopo che Samantha Davies (Roxy), ora bloccata nei Doldrums, ha ingranato la marcia superiore.

Intanto in Vandea si comincia ad organizzare la festa per l’arrivo dei solitari, attesi alla spicciolata all’inizio della prossima settimana. Ristoratori e albergatori attendono il tutto esaurito e dietro le quinte si lavora ad un evento all’altezza della situazione. Dalle parti di Port Olona già si sono appostati i van delle televisioni e i giorbali dedicano ampio spazio alla manifestazione, da sempre considerata come la più dura nel suo genere.

VENDEE GLOBE, ON FIRE AND WARMING UP FOR THE PARTY
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Michel Desjoyeaux is on fire this evening, 17.5 knots is the quickest we have seen from him for a long time and he is set to keep up that pace in the building breeze.
He is at 769 miles ahead of Roland Jourdain and, although Veolia Environnement has picked up speed again, he is still losing miles. It could be 800 by tomorrow.

Brian Thompson, who since weeks pre-start, always said he relished the miles up the Atlantic, is doing a great job, making 14.3 knots average between the rankings – four hours to 18.30GMT – and 14.5 in the 1h speed gun. He is now 214 miles ahead of Dee and 260 miles behind Sam Davies who has slowed in the Doldrums to just over 6 knots.

Meanwhile in a chilly Vendée there is an air of anticipation, even if it is difficult to believe that in just a few days from now the harbour in Les Sables d’Olonne will be thronged with visitors, and that the whole town will be coming alive as the winner of the Vendée Globe crosses the finishing line. Vendée Globe - Oceano Atlantico - Tocca a Roland Jourdain aggirare l’anticiclone delle Azzorre e mentre Veolia Environement rallenta, avanzando a una media di 3.2 nodi, Foncia continua la solitaria avanzata verso Les Sables d’Olonne. Michel Desjoyeaux, localizzato a poco più di 1500 miglia dall’arrivo, ha un margine di circa 600 miglia sul più vicino degli inseguitori e guarda avanti con la consapevolezza di doversi solo guardare da sé stesso. Inutile forzare il passo, specie dopo aver dato dimostrazione di netta superiorità nel corso della risalita dell’Oceano Atlantico.

Il più lento della flotta, invece, è Steve White: per lui, impegnato su Toe In The Water, 1.2 nodi di media. Velocità molto inferiore rispetto a quella fatta segnare da Arkena Verandas che lo anticipa in classifica.

Sempre in tema di performance, il più veloce della flotta è Brian Thompson. Entrato negli Alisei, Bahrain Team Pindar vola a 13,6 nodi, mentre 143 miglia dietro, Dee Caffari su Aviva si deve accontentare di 13,2 nodi.

VENDEE GLOBE, SLOWED AND TRAPPED THE LOW POINTS IN THE HIGHS
[Vendée Globe Press Release] It is Roland Jourdain’s turn to endure the slow going round the Azores High pressure system and as Michel Desjoyeaux’s lead grows ever closer to 600 miles, so Veolia Environnement is making just 3.2 knots this evening.

Steve White is slower, making just 1.2 knots. Jourdain at least has the luxury of a passage round the high, White was caught in the middle, like a victim in a Venus Flytrap, losing miles to Akenas Verandas which, though not exactly setting the heather on fire, is still more than twice as fast.

Brian Thompson is fastest of the fleet this evening in the trade winds making 13.6 knots, whilst 143 miles behind, Dee Caffari on Aviva is making 13.2 knots. Foncia is doing 13.3 and has only 1537 miles to the finish.

Vendée Globe - Oceano Atlantico - Rich Wilson è uno che i numeri li ha nel sangue. Lo skipper di Great American III è infatti un matematico che più di tutto ama la sfida cerebrale tipica della Vendée Globe. Per sua stessa ammissione, il passatempo preferito è lo studio delle carte meteo, che analizza con approccio scientifico, senza lasciare mai nulla al caso.

Un approccio che utilizza anche quando gli viene chiesto un commento sull’età. Wilson, che a conti fatti è lo skipper più anziano in gara, risponde: “L’età? Non è niente di più di un numero”. E a giudicare dal suo cammino parrebbe proprio vero. Ieri, infatti, Great American III è stato il decimo a doppiare Capo Horn – 13.30 GMT – al termine di un approccio lento e faticoso.

Nonostante questo, Rich Wilson è parso tranquillo e misurato, concentrato già sui passi successivi di un’avventura che si dipana nella scia di Foncia, ormai imprendibile leader di una Vendée Globe dai due volti: avvincente ed entusiasmante sino alla Terra del Fuoco, monotona e scontata durante la risalita dell’Atlantico. Ma si sa: chi s’accontenta, gode!

VENDEE GLOBE, GREAT MOMORIES FROM THE GREAT AMERICAN III
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Rich Wilson is highly adept at crunching numbers, a highly skilled mathematician who loves the cerebral challenge of this Vendée Globe, working the weather models to his vest advantage just as much as he has risen to the physical challenge.

But for the race’s oldest skipper, age has never been anything more than a number on his race so far. And today when he rounded Cape Horn, tired after a demanding approach, he was typically low key and measured, simply looking forward to the important northwards turn up the Atlantic at the Island los Estados, some 150 miles NE of Cape Horn.

Wilson passed the rocky landmark at around 13.30 GMT today, in moderating conditions although he had typically angry, violent seas as he passed over the sharp rise in the ocean floor at the continental shelf.
