Volvo Ocean Race Game - Rio de Janeiro - Era la tappa più lunga di sempre, la più temuta da tutti: velisti veri e virtuali. E, almeno a giudicare, dal terremoto provocato in classifica generale del Volvo Ocean Race Game, i timori erano più che fondati.

Non essendo scartabile, infatti, la Qingdao-Rio de Janeiro (12300 miglia) ha dato un nuovo volto alla graduatoria del gruppo Zerogradinord. Leader indiscusso, grazie al terzo piazzamento consecutivo entro la centesima posizione, è Arione. Alberto, skipper di Chiavari, vanta uno score di sostanza (263-266-42-79-16), frutto di un costante studio del meteo; almeno questo è quanto si evince osservando la rotta percorsa per raggiungere il Brasile.

Salutata Qingdao, Arione si è portata verso est e, passato l’Equatore, ha addirittura anticipato la scelta di Aksel Magdahl, mettendo la prua verso est-nordest con buon anticipo rispetto al grosso della flotta. L’evvicinamento a Capo Horn è stato abbastanza tranquillo, anche se, passato il secondo Ice Gate, è tornato a spingersi nuovamente verso nordest, per poi raggiungere l’estremità sud del continente americano con una parabola ascendente.

Secondo assoluto del nostro gruppo, e terzo di tappa, è il francese Sailingcafe X5 (68-8429-10284-542-699), staccato di oltre 700 punti da Arione. Grande battaglia per la terza piazza, alla quale ambiscono in tre, radunati in una manciata di lunghezze. L’imbarcazione danese Mouthansar, con 1584 punti, è incalzata dalla statunitense Roked, quarta a 1631, e dal secondo degli italiani Aztaponz, quinto a 1635.

Si sono chiuse da tempo le iscrizioni al gruppo e la entry list degli aventi diritto a lottare per l’assegnazione dei premi messi in palio con il concorso organizzato dal nostro sito si compone di 118 skipper.

Volvo Ocean Race – Qingdao – Ericsson 4, leader sin dalla partenza della quinta tappa della Volvo Ocean Race, ha fatto il suo ingresso nel Doldrums e a godere del netto rallentamento dello scafo di Torben Grael è Telefonica Blue, partito alla volta di Qingdao con un ritardo di 19 ore rispetto al diretto avversario.

“Ho appena letto l’ultimo report e ha visto che finalmente Ericsson 4 si è fermato e ho pensato che i Doldrums sono iniziati proprio dove immaginavo fossero: a bordo cominciavano a dubitare delle mie parole” ha fatto sapere il navigatore di Telefonica Blue, Tom Addis.

Dal canto suo, l’equipaggio di Bouwe Bekking avanza con passo deciso spinto da venti tesi e  guadagna miglia su miglia nei confronti del leader: “Solitamente in casi come questi si cerca un approccio ai Doldrums ragionato, ma in questa occasione, a voler essere onesti, pensiamo prevalentemente all’opportunità di rimonta che si stà materializzando”. Opportunirtà sottolineata dalla differenza di medie tra gli scafi: Ericsson 4 e Puma avanzano a 9 nodi, mentre Telefonica Blue a 16.

A bordo di Ericsson 4, invece, l’umore non è dei migliori nonostante Puma sia tornato a perdere terreno, come spiega Joca Signorini: “Cerchiamo di tenere la barca in movimento e guardiamo cosa fanno gli altri, in attesa che anche per loro si aprano le porte dei Doldrums”.

Pare aver fermato la propria rimonta anche Ericsson 3, protagonista di un grande ritorno nel corso dei giorni passati. Da bordo dello scafo di Magnus Olsson, posizionato una decina di ore davanti a Telefonica Blue, giungono notizie poco incoraggianti. L’equipaggio, portatosi a sole 25 miglia dalla vetta, lotta con il vento inferiore ai cinque nodi, segno che le temute calme equatoriali non sono poi così lontane.

Nell’avvicinarsi all’Equatore, la flotta è ormai giunta nei pressi delle Isole Marshall, arcipelago composto da 29 atolli e 5 isole maggiori. A sfiorarle sarà Green Dragon, posizionatop 100 miglia a est rispetto alla scia di Ericsson 4. Descritte come luoghi paradisisaci, le isole muovono le fantasie dei membri dei vari equipaggi. Addirittura c’è che pianifica un ritorno in viaggio di piacere: “Credo che tornerò da queste parti con la mia famiglia – ha affermato Tom Addis dal ventre di Telefonica Blue – Se mi incotrerete per le strade, però, ricordatemi che sono in ferie e non deve pensare a riprendere il mare”.

L’avvicinarsi ai Doldrums ha portato con sé la pioggia che, a tratti, è caduta in modo quasi torrenziale. Una nota positiva per i velisti che hanno potuto concedersi il lusso di una doccia e, di conseguenza, di un cambio di vestiti. Una vere e propria manna dal cielo, utile a ripulire anche gli interni dei VOR 70, dove la puzza si era fatta davvero insopportabile.

DOLDRUMS COMPRESSION GIVES HOPE TO BACK MARKERS
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] Ericsson 4 (Torben Grael), pathfinders in this 12,300 nm leg from Qingdao to Rio de Janeiro, has arrived in the Doldrums, much to the relief of the Telefónica Blue (Bouwe Bekking) who started leg five of the Volvo Ocean Race some 19 hours behind the rest of the fleet and now has a chance to close their deficit.

“The last sched has just come in and Ericsson 4 has finally parked – so, at last, the Doldrums are really there – people were starting not to believe me,” wrote Tom Addis, the navigator onboard the blue boat.

Telefónica Blue still has good breeze and is all set to make up some miles while the pressure holds. “We normally dread the light breeze that comes with this sort of transition, but, to be honest, we are all looking forward to the change in routine and the opportunities that it presents,” Addis said. The boat is still averaging 16 knots to Ericsson 4 and Puma’s nine.

Meanwhile, in the thick of clouds and light winds, Joca Signorini, the Brazilian trimmer on Ericsson 4, says the last 10 hours or so have been painful. “We are now trying to keep moving and waiting to see what happens with the others,” he said.

It will be an exciting few days now, as the backmarkers make gains on the leaders who are struggling. Ericsson 3 (Magnus Olsson), currently in third place, reports wind speed of below five knots, so this team too, has arrived at the ITCZ (Inter-tropical Convergence Zone otherwise known as the Doldrums). Per ora, seguendo il suo istinto, qualche risultato l’ha ottenuto, passando dal quinto al quarto posto ai danni di Green Dragon, penalizzato dalla scelta di un’estrema puntata ad est.

“Siamo sempre sott’acqua e sottocoperta ci si muove carponi. Per andare da A a B devi stare molto attento, altrimenti finisci gambe all’aria” ha lo skipper olandese nel corso di uno degli ultimi collegamenti radio.

Come detto, Green Dragon appare in difficoltà, amche se l’emorraggia di miglia pare essersi fermata. In molti si domandano se, al momento, gli uomini di Ian Walker stiano pagando gli esiti di una scelta errata, oppure se tutto risponda a un rischio debitamente calcolato: “E’ semplice – spiega lo skipper stesso – se funzionerà saremo degli eroi, altrimenti passeremo per quelli che presero un rischio e fallirono miseramente. A parte questo, la prossima settimana sarà molto più interessante di quanto lo sarebbe stata se ci fossimo limitati a seguire le scie degli altri”.

Sempre secondo Walker, a frenare l’impeto di Green Dragon è il peso limitato della chiglia. Appare chiaro che, rispetto agli altri team, lo scafo irlandese paghi qualcosa in termine di velocità e in una tappa dove le scelte tattiche contano poco o nulla altro non resta che resistere, o tentare di farlo.

La flotta, intanto, continua a navigare alle portanti, anche se l’angolo s’è fatto più stretto. L’acqua arriva da ogni parte e le condizioni sono davvero dure: “Sono appena smontato dal mio turno e le mie mani sembrano come quelle di uno che è appena uscito da una vasca dopo 10 ore di immersione – ha spiegato il navigatore di Telefonica Blue, Simon Fisher – Le labbra non vanno certo meglio. Mi sembra di aver mangiato un intero sacchetto di popcorn”.

In vetta a guidare le operazioni sono sempre Ericsson 4 e Il Mostro. Lo scafo di Ken Read si allontana e si avvicina ma, in fondo, è sempre lì. Chi si è avvicinato parecchio, invece, è Ericsson 3. L’equipaggio di Magnus Olsson è secondo, in fatto di velocità, solo a Telefonica Blu e nel giro di una notte ha preso 45 miglia ai due battistrada.

TELEFÓNICA BLUE MAKES MOVE AS GREEN DRAGON GAMBLES
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] Bouwe Bekking is determined to stick to his plan and sail to an imaginary point where he thinks will be the best place to cross the Doldrums on leg five of the Volvo Ocean Race. So far, it seems to be working, and Bekking and his team have snatched fourth place from Ian Walker’s Green Dragon, but Bekking describes Telefónica Blue’s current course as a ‘killer’.

“There is heaps of water over the deck and it is uncomfortable downstairs; the guys have to crawl around to go from A to B, as, otherwise, they get airborne,” he said earlier today.

Green Dragon has carried on gaining miles to the east of the leaders (Ericsson 4/Torben Grael and Puma/Ken Read), with now over 200 nm between them. Is this a gamble to get them through the doldrums or is it a calculated risk?

“If it works, of course we will be heroes, and if not, we will be the ones that took the gamble and failed,” said Ian Walker today. “Either way, the next week will be far more interesting than if we just followed their [the tracks of the other boats] tracks, losing miles on every position report,” he said. Volvo Ocean Race – Qingdao – Ancora mure a dritta, le cinque barche protagoniste della quinta tappa della Volvo Ocean Race proseguono la loro marcia verso sud. La flotta è ora localizzata 1200 miglia a nord della Nuova Irlanda nelle Isole Solomone, un’area dove i Doldrum sono in agguato e la brezza aumenta la propria instabilità a ogni manciata di miglia percorse.

Al comando è sempre Ericsson 4, ma Il Mostro non molla la presa. Lo scafo di Ken Read è 45 miglia a nordovest di quello di Torben Grael che, in proiezione, è avanti di circa 10 miglia rispetto all’avversario. Ericsson 3 ha scelto la strada di mezzo e pare trarne buoni frutti, mentre Ian Walker è il più estremo di tutti, 156 miglia a est di Puma. A chiudere le fila è Telefonica Blue, fermo nella scia di Ericsson 3, ma ben 267 miglia dietro la poppa di Ericsson 4.

Navigare alle portanti, per quanto monotono, porta con sé i suoi vantaggi. Non ci sono vele o attrezzatura da mettere via, sacchi da spostare e sarà così per almeno un’altra settimana. Tra gli aspetti negativi della navigazione in poppa c’è l’enorme quantitativo d’acqua che arriva a bagnare la coperta e a irritare gli occhi dei velisti: “Abbiamo tutti gli occhi irritati – ha spiegato il media crew member di Ericsson 3, Gustav Morin – e quasto nonostante si sia sempre attrezzati con elmetti e mascherine di protezione”.

A tal proposito, su Telefonica Blue si provano diverse soluzioni, coem spiega Simon Fisher: “La maggior parte dei ragazzi indossa casco e visiera. David Vera è andato oltre, proteggendosi con una maschera da lavoro, e Michael Pammenter fronteggia i frangenti con un paio di occhialini da sub. Seppur ridicolo alla vista, questo sembra essere il modo migliore per venirne fuori”.

WET, HOT AND MANKY
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] It is still a hot port-gybe reach for the five boats engaged in the charge south during leg five of the Volvo Ocean Race. The fleet is currently 1200 nm north of New Ireland in the Solomon Islands, the area where the doldrums are lurking and light and shifty breeze await.

Top boat is Ericsson 4 (Torben Grael), with Puma (Ken Read) positioned neatly on her starboard hip, 45 nm to the northwest, but only 10 nm astern. Ericsson 3 (Magnus Olsson) has chosen the middle road, while Ian Walker still has Green Dragon in the east, 156 nm further east than Puma. Bringing up the rear is Telefónica Blue (Bouwe Bekking), who is ploughs a lonely furrow almost exactly the wake of Ericsson 3, but 267 nm behind Ericsson 4.

Reaching, although rather monotonous, does have its advantages. There are no sails or gear to stack when the boat tacks, and it looks as if this will be the case for at least another week. “The stack has stayed pretty much in place for the best part of a week, apart from a bit of carting it forward and aft to help the trim of the boat,” says Telefónica Blue’s Simon Fisher. Volvo Ocean Race – Qingdao – Sorride Ken Read nel vedere Il Mostro tenere il passo di Ericsson 4. Lo skipper statunitense sorride perchè sa bene che le condizioni meteo delle ultime ore sono state decisamente favorevoli alle caratteristiche del VOR 70 di Torben Grael, da sempre a suo agio quando c’è da fare strada sfruttando venti che spingono da dietro.

La coppia di testa, messa la prua verso sud-sudest, ha fatto decisamente il vuoto: Ericsson 3, terza forza di una flotta che si dipana lungo quasi 300 miglia di Oceano, è staccato di 142 miglia e vanta un buon margine su Green Dragon, quarto a 207 miglia dal binomio Grael-Read.

Nonostante il distacco dai battistrada aumenti, a bordo di Ericsson 3 si respira un clima rilassato, pur spingendo la barca al massimo delle sue performance. A dare grattacapi agli uomini di Magnus Olsson è l’instabilità della situazione meteo, caratterizzata da continue variazioni dell’intensità della brezza, come spiega il Media Crew Member, Gustav Morin: “Scegliere la giusta vela è la cosa più difficile. Il vento varia tra i 10 e i 20 nodi e l’angolo oscilla tra i 30° e i 55°”.

Per Green Dragon, le ultime 24 ore sono state particolarmente impegnative, specie perchè sono giunti al pettine i nodi generati dalla posizione troppo settentrionale: nodi costati oltre 80 miglia. Una situazione descritta da un abbacchiato Ian Walker: ”Il problema è che da due giorni a questa parte il vento è diminuito e per noi che avevamo puntato con decisione verso est le cose si sono fatte difficili. Bavigare troppo poggiati vuol dire camminare poco. L’abbiamo comunque presa con filosofia, questo è il grande gioco della vela”.

Se Ian Walker non ride, Bouwe Bekking non sa che pesci pigliare. Partito in ritardo a causa dell’urto con un basso fondale, Telefonica Blue arranca, vessato da condizioni meteo decisamente penalizzanti: “Pian piano ci stiamo avvicinando alla zona dove il vento è più teso ed è allora che speriamo di limitare le perdite”.

Ultime annotazioni di carattere pratico: man mano che si scende verso sud le temperature aumentano. Cerate e capi termici hanno lasciato spazio a spraytop e vestiario leggero. Le creme e gli occhiali da sole sono tornati di gran moda e, a bordo, i debuttanti cominciano a prendere le misure con la spartana vita di chi ha scelto di trascorrere le proprie giornate “…at the extreme”.

A FLAT OUT DRAG RACE
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] Fast, warm reaching is on offer today for the five-boat Volvo Ocean Race fleet as it races on through the Pacific Ocean on leg five, the longest leg of the course at 12,300 nm.

Ken Read is delighted that Puma is able to keep in touch with race leader Ericsson 4 (Torben Grael), who is known to excel in fast reaching conditions. Puma is only four miles behind Ericsson 4, making up four miles in the last 24-hours, and the pair is beginning to open up a substantial lead over the chasing three.

Ericsson 3 (Magnus Olsson) is a safe 142 nm astern of Ericsson 4. Although they have added 63 nm to their deficit since 13.00 GMT yesterday, it is still good enough for third place. In spite of the loss of miles to the leader, the atmosphere onboard is one of high spirits, as the team presses the boat as hard as they can. The wind has been shifty and Gustav Morin MCM reports that it has been difficult to keep good speed and make the right choice of sails. “We have between 10 – 20 knots of wind and the angle has constantly been going back and forth from 30 to 55 degrees,” he said.

The two new crewmembers onboard Ericsson 3, Norwegian Arve Roaas and Sweden’s Magnus Woxen are blending well with the old crew and are enjoying racing the latest generation of Volvo Open 70. They are beginning to feel more comfortable about housekeeping rules such as knowing where to put their boots and socks while sleeping, and how to fit into a sleeping bag and climb up into a bunk, which has only 20cm headroom. Volvo Ocean Race – Qingdao – Decisa a est, la flotta della Volvo Ocean Race sembra essere intenzionata a rimandare ancora di qualche giorno la poggiata verso sud, verso lo scoring gate costituito dall’immaginaria linea che unisce Est Cape (Nuova Zelanda) con Lebu (Cile). Questo perchè, come spiega Stu Bannatyne, il navigatore di Ericsson 4: “…i VOR 70 amano il vento alle portanti. In condizioni giuste possono superare la velocità della brezza. Ora stiamo sfruttando i venti da nord per coprire quante più miglia possibile. Una volta che incontreremo i venti da nord-est inizieremo a scendere con decisione verso l’Equatore. Per il momento, quindi, pensiamo a correre veloci. Di questo passo siamo convinti di poter raggiungere lo scoring gate posto a 36° sud in anticipo di quanto avremmo fatto seguendo la rotta ideale”.

Una decisione, quella di far rotta verso est, presa con largo anticipo da Ian Walker. Lo skipper di Green Dragon, seguendo l’istinto del suo navigatore Wouter Verbraak, già impegnato a bordo di Team Russia, ha scelto una rotta ancor più estrema ed è ora 60 miglia a nord di Ericsson 3 e 120 migli a nord-ovest di Ericsson 4.

Il VOR 70 di Torben Grael è sempre al comando della flotta, ma le ultime ore sono state molto positive per Il Mostro, portatosi a 8 miglia dal leader. Per il resto, i distacchi sono rimasti più o meno invariati e poco dovrebbe cambiare nel corso dei prossimi giorni.

GRINDING DOWN THE OPPOSITION
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] The Volvo fleet is heading east and Green Dragon (Ian Walker) has taken a more easterly course than the others have. Why are they not taking the straighter route towards New Zealand?

Stu Bannatyne, watch captain onboard the leading boat, Ericsson 4 (Torben Grael) says the answer is simple really: “These Volvo Open 70s like the wind to be free so we can sail fast angles and really keep the boat moving along at wind speed or higher. To this end, we are using the northerly winds we now have to make some miles to the east before we join up with the north-east trade winds in a few days time. If it all pans out, then, by the time we are headed, we will have enough of an easterly position to head south and keep the boat sailing the fast angles that it loves. This should enable us to reach the scoring line at 36 degrees south a lot sooner than taking the direct route”.

But, why has Ian Walker decided to take Green Dragon even further to the east? Walker and his new navigator, Team Russia’s Wouter Verbraak from Holland, have held a more northerly course for most of the past 24 hours, and now they are 60 miles due north of Ericsson 3 (Magnus Olsson), and 120 miles to the north-west of the Ericsson 4. Volvo Ocean Race – Qingdao – Temperature che aumentano e vento che, dopo la sfuriata delle passate ore, concede un pò di tregua, permettendo agli equipaggi di coprire miglia in tranquillità. Sebbene la tappa sia la più lunga nella storia della regata, ai protagonisti non dispiace certo vedere la distanza che li separa dal traguardo limarsi piuttosto rapidamente; il primo grande traguardo, più psicologico che pratico, sarà quello di poter pensare a Rio de Janeiro come a un punto lontano meno di 10.000 miglia.

Da quando si sono lasciati alle spalle le coste cinesi, i cinque VOR 70 impegnati nella quinta tappa della Volvo Ocean Race hanno orzato leggermente, tenendo rotta 110°.

A guidare la sparuta flotta, con un margine in netto aumento, è sempre Ericsson 4. Lo scafo di Torben Grael, leader della classifica generale, oltre a essere il più a sud di tutti, non solo resiste con apparente semplicità agli attacchi de Il Mostro, ma addirittura si cava il lusso di un primo tentativo di fuga. Ken Read e i suoi uomini, però, sono nella scia del battistrada e paiono determinati a tenergli testa sino all’ultimo.

Ottima progressione di Ericsson 3 che, tagliato il traguardo della quarta tappa quando la quinta era già iniziata e incassati quattro punti utili tanto alla classifica quanto al morale, si è messo all’inseguimento degli avversari con 7 ore di ritardo. Il team di Magnus Olsson, distante 73 miglia da Ericsson 4, ha subito ripreso e staccato Ian Walker, quarto su Green Dragon.

Perde invece altro terreno Telefonica Blue, ora localizzato a più di 200 miglia da Ericsson 4. Il VOR 70 di Bouwe Bekking, costretto a tornare in porto prima del via per verificare l’entità dei danni derivati dall’urto con un basso fondale, è infatti alle prese con venti meno favorevoli di quelli che nelle ultime ore hanno fatto letteralmente volare gli scafi che lo precedono.

Volvo Ocean Race – Qingdao – Flotta ridotta per la partenza della quinta tappa della Volvo Ocean Race, non solo perchè Ericsson 3 ancora non ha terminato la quarta tappa ed è a più di 20 miglia da Qingdao, ma anche perchè Telefonica Blue si è vista costretta a sospendere la propria corsa e rientrare in porto dopo essere finita a scogli. Sembra infatti che, mentre Bouwe Bekking portava la barca ad una velocità di sei-sette nodi, la stessa si sia incagliata; un membro dell’equipaggio si è subito tuffato ma non ha potuto valutare con chiarezza il danno.
Così a cinque minuti dal via, l’equipaggio di Telefonica Blue – attualmente secondo in classifica generale e vincitore delle ultime due tappe – ha ammainato la randa e messo la prua in direzione Qingdao. Una volta arrivati in porto la barca è stata immediatamente tirata fuori dall’acqua per la valutazione dei danni.

“La cosa che mi preoccupa di più – ha dichiarato lo skipper Bouwe Bekking, dopo un breve sguardo alla chiglia – è una fessura subito sopra il bulbo. Tutta la vernice è scomparsa, ciò significa che qualcosa si è mosso. Ora dobbiamo solo valutare più approfonditamente il danno e fare tutto nel modo corretto. La tappa che ci aspetta non è delle più semplici e voglio che la barca sia sicura al 100% per il mio equipaggio”.

Intanto sul campo di regata è stato dato lo start e Green Dragon si è portato subito in prima linea. Alla prima boa però Il Mostro, con un uomo in testa d’albero alla ricerca del vento migliore, conquista il controllo anticipando l’equipaggio di Ian Walker di 53 secondi, terzo a sette secondi da quest’ultimo, Ericsson 4. 

PUMA LEADS AS TELEFÓNICA BLUE SUSPENDS RACING AT START OF LEG FIVE
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] In a dramatic opening to leg five of the Volvo Ocean Race, minutes before the start gun fired, Telefónica Blue (Bouwe Bekking/NED) dropped her sails and returned to port, leaving a fleet reduced to three boats to contest the start in Qingdao.

Green Dragon (Ian Walker/GBR) was first over the line in a slow-motion start in-front of her home town crowd, only to relinquish to the lead to Puma (Ken Read/USA) as the reduced fleet began their epic journey of 12,300 nautical miles around the infamous Cape Horn and into Rio de Janeiro in Brasil.

Minutes before the five-minute warning signal, the crew of Telefónica Blue (Bouwe Bekking/NED), currently second in the overall standings and winner of the last two offshore legs, dropped their mainsail and skipper Bouwe Bekking turned his boat back towards Qingdao. Cinque squadre sono pronte a lasciare il Porto di Qingdao alle 13.00 di domani (05.00 GMT), consapevoli di dover affrontare una marcia lunga 12.300 miglia che durerà almeno un mese e che riserverà non poche insidie. La flotta infatti prima di avvicinarsi alle condizioni tropicali di Rio de Janeiro, dovrà passare Capo Est in Nuova Zelanda e sfilare tra i ghiacci a nord di Capo Horn. 

Quattro team – Ericsson 4, Telefonica Blue, Il Mostro e Green Dragon - sono da ormai tre settimane nel porto di Qingdao e, dopo aver effettuato tutte le riparazioni del caso, attendono solo un ultimo equipaggio, Ericsson 3. Quest’ultimo infatti è attualmente in corsa verso la città cinese a circa 180 miglia di distanza, con la speranza negli animi di riuscire ad arrivare in tempo per la partenza della quinta tappa.
