AMERICA’S CUP, A COMMITEE PRO NEWPORT AND RHODE ISLAND
[Source The Providence Journal] State leaders have established an America’s Cup 2013 Planning Committee to create a pitch to lure the America’s Cup challenge back to Rhode Island.

The governor’s office along with Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed and House Speaker Gordon D. Fox, announced Friday that it has formed the committee, to be coordinated through the Economic Development Corporation.

The group, which will include a combination of yachting experts, Newport administrators and state officials, will meet for the first time next week, said EDC Executive Director Keith Stokes.

“The goal is to assess the existing marine assets and facilities we have so we can create a formal proposal for the America’s Cup races,” Stokes said in an interview Friday.

He said he hopes to have that pitch ready by the time members of the BMW Oracle Racing team, including Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, visit Rhode Island on an East Coast leg of their Victory Tour, following their capture of the 33rd Cup challenge in Valencia, Spain, this month.

After winning, Ellison cited three U.S. cities as possible locations for the next challenge in 2013: San Francisco, San Diego and Newport.

Team officials have not yet confirmed when that visit will take place, but Stokes said he has spoken to BMW Oracle representatives who have indicated their interest in receiving a proposal at that time.

Stokes said he believes the Cup will travel first to Washington, D.C., before coming to Rhode Island sometime in the near future.

In addition to the EDC director, other members of the committee are Robin Wallace, chairman of the Rhode Island State Yachting Committee; Halsey Herreshoff, president of the Herreshoff Marine Museum and America’s Cup Hall of Fame; David Elwell, commodore of the New York Yacht Club; W.H. Dyer Jones, America’s Cup regatta manager in Valencia and Auckland, New Zealand; and Michael Keyworth, of the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association. All are also members of the Rhode Island State Yachting Committee.

The planning committee also includes Brad Read, executive director of Sail Newport; Ed Lavelle, Newport city manager; Mark Brodeur, Rhode Island tourism director, as well as yet unnamed designees of Fox and Paiva Weed.
