AMERICA’S CUP, ATTENTION TO DETAIL
America’s Cup - Valencia – We publish three pictures of the USA that have attracted our attention on two details.

In the first image, taken with aperture 5.6 and exposure time equal to 1/1000, the water detaching from the hulls of the trimaran looks unnatural, as if the hulls were painted with a substance intended to limit the Skin Friction. Against the reintroduction of this rule – number 53 – BMW Oracle Racing has focused a part of the request of redress made by the Challenger of Record few days ago.

In the second and third you notice what looked like being a slot in the forward part of the two outer hulls of the trimaran. The fissure appears in the center of an area of the hull apparently worked. The image on the right it is possible to identify a greater presence of water right next to this alleged slot.

Some ideas on this?

    1. The water surface area of USA has changed. Either a type of paint or film
to reduce skin fiction with the water. Below is the link of what USA used in
Perth. If USA is using something like this it will be way more advanced due
to NASA’s advancement in technology since Perth:
    http://www.nasa.gov/centers/langley/news/factsheets/Riblets.html

    2. Looks like they are relocating the LWL marks as the silver ones are gone
& there is a break in the paint or film. How USA floats in the Med would be
different & they have put the mast step back to it’s old spot or even
further back which would change how USA floats for LWL. Also I would expect
they have sensors located at these points. Notice the inspection hatch on
the center hull under the LE.

    3. At the LWL points the rest of the water build up & run off at this point
could be that they are not finished with the LWL marks & have not faired the
sensor band. I doubt that USA has any outlets that release a skin friction
solution that is chemical as it’s against USA law.
