BARCELONA WORLD RACE, MAPFRE MAKE UP THE MILES
[Source Barcelona World Race] This morning Mapfre take over the mantle as the fastest boat on the fleet as they pick up new breeze from a front which is curving north as it tracks east. Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez are sailing at over 15 knots in this morning’s 1000hrs update, and have gained over 20 miles on leader Virbac Paprec 3.

Jean-Pierre Dick and Loick Peyron are still under the influence of the low pressure system which powered them to over 500 miles ahead of Mapfre, but are beginning to lose the fastest breezes and their speed has dropped to an average of 12 knots over the past five hours. Where Foncia is, nobody knows, as Michel Desjoyeaux and Francois Gabart remain in stealth mode until tomorrow morning (05.00hrs UTC).

From nearly 10 miles behind Estrella Damm, Groupe Bel have jumped to nearly 10 miles in front of Alex Pella and Pepe Ribes in fourth place, while Estrella Damm‘s speed drops to just a quarter of Kito de Pavant and Sebastien Audigane’s over the past hour. However, no boat is yet escaping the light wind zones, and with the exception of the southerly Virbac Paprec 3 and Mapfre, the whole fleet has averaged 6.5 knots or less over the past 24 hours.

The bad news for all, is that the light patches look set to become the norm, as two high pressure systems consolidate into one large anticylone and spreading a windless zone across the south Atlantic.

In sixth and seventh place Renault Z.E. and Mirabaud‘s pace had picked up to 8 knots at the time of the ranking, while behind them Neutrogena and GAES Centros Auditivos were once again ensnared. Central Lechera Asturiana has retaken Hugo Boss to move into 10th, while the final boat in the fleet, Forum Maritim Catalan, is now more than 1,000 miles behind the leaders.
