Volvo Ocean Race Legends – Alicante – Lady Pippa Blake, moglie del compianto navigatore Sir Peter Blake, il carismatico skipper neozelandese che prese parte alle prime cinque edizioni della Whitbread Round the World Race (divenuta poi Volvo Ocean Race nel 1998), vincendola nel 1989-90 a bordo di Steinlager 2, è la prima ambasciatrice della regata Volvo Ocean Race Legends in programma dal 1 al 5 novembre 2011 ad Alicante.
Lady Pippa, che è anche un’artista di livello internazionale, vive nella casa che condivise con Sir Peter a Emsworth nel Regno Unito, e ha aderito senza esitazioni alla prima reunion ufficiale delle barche e dei velisti che hanno preso parte alle prime dieci edizioni del giro del mondo.
“La Whitbread avrà sempre un posto speciale nel mio cuore – ha dichiarato – E’ un evento dove ho conosciuto tante persone che mi sono ancora amiche oggi e ricordo con piacere il divertimento di viaggiare insieme intorno al mondo. La vittoria del 1989-90 è arrivata al culmine di tanti anni di preparazione e di lavoro, un aspetto in cui Peter eccelleva”.
“La Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta sarà certamente un evento da non perdere, che riunirà amici da tutto il pianeta per raccogliere memorie e storie, per ricordare i bei tempi, i momenti felici e difficili, la gloria e la sconfitta. Sarà uno spettacolo unico poter rivedere regatare le barche che hanno fatto la storia della regata e ammirarle navigare in parata ad Alicante per accompagnare la flotta della Volvo. Sono molto orgogliosa di essere stata coinvolta in questo progetto e non vedo di vivere quella che senza dubbio sarà una settimana incredibile”.
Knut Frostad, CEO della Volvo Ocean Race e creatore dell’evento, ha dato il benvenuto a Lady Pippa con queste parole: “Peter Blake è stato un’icona, un uomo rispettato da tutti, specialmente da coloro che sono stati suoi avversari in mare. Molti dei suoi amici e di quelli che hanno navigato con lui saranno presenti il prossimo anno alla Volvo Ocean Race Legends. Siamo molto fieri di poter contare sulla presenza di Lady Pippa Blake per celebrare in maniera degna la storia di questo grande evento”.
La Volvo Legends Regatta and Reunion
– sarà la prima riunione ufficiale di tutti coloro che hanno preso parte al giro del mondo a vela dalla prima edizione del 1973-74;
– si svolgerà ad Alicante, in Spagna, dal 1 al 5 novembre 2011, nella settimana che inizierà con la In-Port Race e si concluderà con la partenza della prima tappa della Volvo Ocean Race;
– comprenderà due giorni di regata e si chiuderà con una parata delle barche che scorteranno la flotta dei VO70 fino alla linea di partenza;
– la reunion prevede anche un ricco programma di eventi sociali a terra, tra cui incontri con i protagonisti, forum, la premiazione e una cena di gala;
– tutte le barche partecipanti saranno ormeggiate in porto per la visione da parte del pubblico.
La manifestazione si prospetta come un appuntamento di grandi velisti e di barche uniche, un concorso di eleganza, un’opportunità di rivivere vecchie rivalità, in breve una grande festa da non perdere.

VOLVO OCEAN RACE, LADY PIPPA BLAKE EVENT’S AMBASSADOR
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] Lady Pippa Blake, wife of the late, great, Sir Peter Blake, the charismatic New Zealander who completed the first five Whitbread Round the World Races (which later became the Volvo Ocean Race in 1998), and who won the 1989-90 event with Steinlager 2, is to be the first Ambassador to the Volvo Ocean Race Legends reunion and regatta, which takes place on 1-5 November in Alicante next year.
Pippa, a well-known artist, who lives in the house she shared with Sir Peter by the estuary in Emsworth, UK, is delighted to be involved with this first ever official reunion of boats and people who have taken part in the first 10 races.
“The Whitbread will always hold a special place in my heart,” Pippa said. “So many friendships were made then, that still hold good today, and I remember the fun we had travelling the world together. Winning the event in 1989-90 was the culmination of years of planning, something that Peter was very good at.
“The Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta will be an event not to be missed, one where friends from all over the world will gather to reminisce, tell stories, remember the good times, the hard times, the glory and the defeat. It will be an amazing sight to see some of the boats that are etched in the history of this event, out on the water in racing trim, and parading out of Alicante at the head of the Volvo fleet. I am very proud to be involved and am looking forward very much to what is sure to be a fabulous week.”
Knut Frostad, Volvo Ocean Race CEO, whose brainchild this event is, welcomed Pippa. “Peter Blake was a sailor’s sailor, a man who was respected by everyone, particularly those against whom he raced. Many of his former crew will be at the Volvo Ocean Race Legends event next year, and we could not be more proud to have Pippa there with us, celebrating the history of this great event.”
About the Volvo Legends Regatta and Reunion
– The first ever official reunion of all who have sailed in the world’s premier ocean race since the inaugural race in 1973-74;
– To be held in Alicante, Spain from 1-5 November 2011, week between Alicante In-Port Race and the Start of Leg One of the Volvo Ocean Race;
– A full racing schedule over two days;
– Will conclude with a departure ceremony and parade of sail to escort the Volvo Ocean Race fleet to the start line for Leg One;
– A rich shoreside programme includes a regatta prizegiving, a gala dinner and a host of other social events;
– Chat shows and forums after racing;
– Legends entries open for public viewing.
The event promises to be a combination of a reunion of sailing greats, a concours d’elegance, an opportunity to renew old rivalries, and a party not to be missed.
