Melges 24 World Championship – San Francisco – Si svolgerà poche settimane dopo la conclusione della 34ma America’s Cup il Campionato Mondiale Melges 24 2013. Un link d’obbligo quello tra la Vecchia Brocca e la classe monotipo più diffusa al mondo, visto che l’evento si disputerà nelle ventose acque della baia di San Francisco, scelta come sede della prossima Coppa America da Oracle Racing.

Ad organizzare la manifestazione non sarà il Golden Gate Yacht Club, ma il San Francisco Yacht Club, come annunciato oggi dal Commodoro, Robert Heller: “Non vediamo l’ora di ospitare gli specialisti della classe Melges 24 nel corso di un anno che vedrà la nostra città diventare capitale assoluta della vela”.

Una scelta condivisa anche dal titolare della Melges Performance Sailboats, Harry Melges: “Il Melges 24 si sposa perfettamente con le condizioni tipiche della baia di San Francisco, uno dei posti migliori al mondo per svolgere regate di alto livello. Un Mondiale da queste parti è sempre un evento da non perdere”.

“L’ultima visita che la classe Melges 24 ha fatto a San Francisco è stata in occasione del Mondiale del 2003 – ha concluso Riccardo Simoneschi, presidente della Classe Internazionale – Sono davvero molto soddisfatto all’idea che un decennio dopo si torni in quella che considero la Mecca della vela. La combinazione  tra condizioni meteo e l’ospitalità unica del San Francisco Yacht Club faranno della manifestazione un evento da non perdere”.


MELGES 24 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, 2013 EDITION WILL BE IN SAN FRANCISCO
[Melges 24 International Class Press Releas] The International Melges 24 Class Association and The San Francisco Yacht Club are pleased to announce that the 2013 Melges 24 World Championship will be hosted by the San Francisco Yacht Club. The event will take place from September 28 through October 5 2013, one week after the America’s Cup Finals.

“We look forward to hosting Melges 24 racers from around the globe in what promises to be a year filled with spectacular racing on San Francisco Bay,” said San Francisco Yacht Club Commodore Robert Heller.

“The Melges 24 was made for the conditions of San Francisco Bay, which represents one of the greatest places in the World to sail,” remarked Harry Melges, CEO of Melges Performance Sailboats, “a World Championship here is a not to be missed event.”

“I look forward to personally welcoming our friends from around the world to a marquee World Championship in San Francisco in 2013,” added Christopher Farkas, San Francisco Melges 24 Fleet Captain.

The San Francisco Yacht Club, the oldest yacht club west of the Mississippi, has for over a decade been the leading organizer of Melges 24 regattas on San Francisco Bay, hosting the Fleet’s 2010 US Gold Cup, the 2011 Pacific Coast Championship and the North American Championship in 2012, as well as the annual finale of the Melges California Cup Series.

“Our last visit to San Francisco for a Melges 24 World Championship was in 2003 and I am delighted that a decade on we will once again return to this Mecca of performance sailing for a World Championship. The combination of great sailing waters, top class race management and the San Francisco Yacht Club’s legendary hospitality are a major draw and we look forward to a record breaking attendance.” commented International Melges 24 Class Association Chairman Riccardo Simoneschi.
