America’s Cup, Alinghi commenta la giornata odierna

America’s Cup – Valencia – La regata 1 della 33a America’s Cup è stata rinviata oggi a causa di venti leggeri e instabili sul mar Mediterraneo.
Alinghi era impaziente di regatare con il suo catamarano di 90 piedi Alinghi 5 dopo sette mesi di test e sperimentazione, ma dovrà aspettare fino a mercoledì per avere la prossima occasione.
“Il vento era molto leggero – ha detto il navigatore Juan Vila – Abbiamo avuto qualche raffica fino a 6 nodi, che però non è durata a lungo. La direzione inoltre era molto variabile, per lo più da Ovest, ma non abbastanza per una sfida imparziale. Le previsioni per il prosieguo della giornata non sembravano essere confortanti, quindi penso che la decisione di non regatare oggi sia stata giusta”.
Il team meteo di Alinghi aveva previsto per oggi vento intorno ai 10 nodi, ma il passaggio del fronte freddo ha sconvolto le previsioni.
“Davanti al fronte freddo c’era un leggero vento di gradiente da Sud con molte nuvole e anche rovesci – ha detto Jack Katzfey, meteorologo del team – Le montagne di Valencia hanno frenato il vento e bloccato ogni possibilità di uno sviluppo del flusso d’aria. Il vento sarebbe dovuto diminuire, ma non quanto poi in realtà è successo”.
L’annullamento della prova odierna è stato comunicato ufficialmente alle 13.50, quando i velisti di Alinghi erano in acqua da ormai sette ore. Gli ormeggi erano stati mollati questa mattina alle 6.30 nell’oscurità della notte con luci di via temporanee fissate sugli scafi a prua e a poppa per il traino dalla base nel Port America’s Cup fino alla linea di partenza.
Quella di oggi sarebbe stata per Alinghi la 13a regata dell’America’s Cup dal 2003. Si è invece tramutata nell’ottavo rinvio sperimentato dal defender portacolori della Société Nautique de Genève.
“Sapevamo che in queste condizioni sarebbe potuto succedere quello che puoi è accaduto. Non possamo pensare di avere ogni giorno le condizioni ideali per regatare – ha detto Villa, aggiungendo poi – Oggi sfortunatamente è andata così, ma sono quasi sicuro che troveremo un altro giorno per regatare nelle migliori condizioni possibili. La cosa più importante è che dopo il colpo di cannone, la regata si svolga in maniera corretta per tutti e due i partecipanti”.
La regata 1 della 33a America’s Cup è in programma per Mercoledì prossimo, meteo permettendo.
AMERICA’S CUP, ALINGHI COMMENTS TODAY’S POSTPONNEMENT
[Alinghi Press Release] Today’s scheduled Race 1 of the 33rd America’s Cup Match was postponed due to light and unstable winds on the Mediterranean Sea.
The Alinghi team was looking forward to racing the 90ft catamaran Alinghi 5 after seven months of testing and trialling, but now they’ll have to wait until Wednesday for the next opportunity.
“It was very light – said navigator Juan Vila – We had some puffs up to 6 knots but they didn’t last long. The direction also was random, mostly from the west but not enough for a fair race. The forecast didn’t look promising once the wind got variable, so I think it was a good decision not to race today”.
Alinghi´s weather team predicted winds around 10 knots today, but showers from a passing cold front disrupted the forecast.
“Ahead of the cold front was a weak southerly gradient with lots of clouds and some showers – said Jack Katzfey, team meteorologist – The mountains in Valencia disrupted the winds and killed any chance of a flow developing. It was supposed to get lighter, but it got a lot lighter”.
The day was officially called at 13.50, after the Alinghi sailors had been on the water for more than seven hours. They departed the team base in the Port America’s Cup this morning at 06.30 engulfed in darkness, with temporary running lights affixed on the hulls and aft cross beam for the tow to the start line.
Today would’ve marked the 13th race in an America’s Cup Match for Alinghi dating back to 2003. Instead, it was the eighth postponement experienced by the Defender from the Société Nautique de Genève.
“We knew the conditions would be like this here. We can’t count on every day being perfect to have a race – Vila said – Today, unfortunately, wasn’t, but I’m pretty sure we’ll find another day to have a fair race. It’s important that when the starting gun goes off it’s a fair race for everyone”.
Race 1 of the 33rd America’s Cup is scheduled for Wednesday, weather permitting.
