America’s Cup – Valencia – Oggi per la terza volta si cercherà di dare inizio alla 33a America’s Cup, con la partecipazione di Alinghi 5 come defender della Société Nautique de Genève. Il primo tentativo lunedì scorso è fallito a causa delle condizioni di vento instabile associato un fronte freddo mentre mercoledì 10 febbraio il rinvio è stato causato da onde alte con picchi anche di 2 metri.
Come previsto dal Deed of Gift, il regolamento che risale al diciannovesimo secolo e che disciplina l’America’s Cup, la regata di oggi sarà un bastone di 20 miglia di bolina e 20 di poppa.
Il Deed of Gift e il Bando di Regata prevedono che “ci sia un giorno di intervallo tra la conclusione di una regata e l’inizio della successiva”.

Brad Butterworth, skipper e tattico del team: “Speriamo ci siano buone condizioni oggi in mare. Penso che il vento andrà a diminuire nel corso della giornata. Se trovremo il momento giusto per la partenza, potremo disputare una buona regata in condizioni ideali per entrambe le barche. Questi continui rinvii sono frustranti per tutti, non vediamo l’ora di essere in mare e regatare per capire realmente quanto queste barche siano veloci. Oggi potrebbe essere il giorno giusto”.

Alinghi è composta da 130 persone in rappresentanza di 20 nazionalità diverse che lavorano in 7 differenti reparti: velisti, progettisti, meteo, stampa, marketing, amministrazione e tecnici di terra.
L’area di regata si estende per circa 450 miglia2 o 1.165 Km2.
Per costruire Alinghi 5 sono state necessarie 100,000 ore di manodopera.
Il gennaker di 1100m2 è uno dei tre più grandi al mondo.
L’albero di Alinghi 5 è alto come 17 piani di un palazzo. A bordo di Alinghi ci sono 534 metri di manovre fisse in fibra di carbonio (sartie, strallo di prua e volanti).
Accadeva oggi nella Storia dell’America’s Cup…
1970 – Gretel II è stato il challenger a Sydney, in Australia, in rappresentanza del Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, durante la terza e ultima sfida del magnate dei media australiano Sir Frank Packer. Gretel II ha introdotto numerose innovazioni, tra cui la chiglia che è separata dal timone, a sua volta manovrato da una doppia ruota così da consentire al timoniere una visione migliore e ad avere il suo peso in una posizione migliore a bolina. Altre novità sono rappresentate da il posizionamento dell’albero, profilato con crocette pieghevoli sottovento, molto arretrato che consente l’utilizzo di un genoa di dimensioni maggiori, aumentando così la sua capacità di navigare di bolina.
Gretel II è stato il primo challenger a provare “l’assalto alla Coppa”, scelto con una selezione tra sfidanti di diverse nazionalità, sconfiggendo France del Barone Bich. Gretel II, dal nome della moglie di Packer (così come il suo primo challenger Gretel nel 1962) è stato sconfitto da Intrepid 4-0. Questa è stata la seconda vittoria di Intrepid per l’America’s Cup, che è diventato così il secondo yacht a vincere due volte nella storia della Coppa. Gretel II è stato restaurato nel 2009 in Nuova Zelanda e attualmente sta ancora regatando presso il porto di Sydney.
2009 – Alinghi batte BMW Oracle Racing nella sfida finale della Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, 2-0. E’ stata l’ultima volta che Alinghi e BMW Oracle Racing si sono incontrati in un match race prima della 33a America’s Cup.

AMERICA’S CUP, ALINGHI MORNING LINE
[Alinghi Press Release] Today marks the third attempt to commence the 33rd America’s Cup, a Deed of Gift match between Alinghi 5 as the Defender from the Société Nautique de Genève and USA representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club. The first attempt on Monday was abandoned due to unstable wind conditions associated with a passing cold front, and Wednesday’s second attempt was postponed shore side due to waves measuring up to 2m.
As per the Deed of Gift, the 19th century document governing the America’s Cup, today’s race shall be 20nm to windward and return.

Brad Butterworth, team skipper and tactician: “Hopefully there will be good conditions out there. I think it’s lightening off. The big breeze is going away. I think if we go to a good spot we’ll get good conditions and we’ll be able to have a good race that’ll suit both boats It’s a bit frustrating for all of us being postponed, I want to get out there and race and see how fast these boats are. Today looks like a good day”.

On this day in America’s Cup history
1970 – Challenger Gretel II is launched in Sydney, Australia, to be the representative of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, the third and last challenge of Australian media magnate Sir Frank Packer. Gretel II introduced several innovations including dual wheels to give the helmsman a better view and to have his weight better positioned to windward, as well as collapsible spreaders to enable the genoa to be sheeted closer to the mast, enhancing her ability to sail to windward. Gretel II was the first challenger to be selected in a Challenger Selection Series defeating Baron Bich’s France to proceed to the match. Gretel II, named after Packer’s wife (as well as his first challenger Gretel in 1962) was defeated by Intrepid 4-0. It was Intrepid‘s second America’s Cup win, becoming only the second yacht to do so in the history of the Cup. Gretel II was restored in 2009 in New Zealand and is now racing once again on Sydney Harbour.
2009 – Alinghi defeats BMW Oracle Racing in the Challenger Final of the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, 2-0, the last time Alinghi and BMW Oracle Racing met in a match race before the 33rd America’s Cup.
