America’s Cup – Valencia – Questo pomeriggio Alinghi ha perso la prima regata della 33a America’s Cup che si svolge al meglio delle tre prove, dopo una dura battaglia nel pre partenza e una regata di 40 miglia complessive. Il Defender della Société Nautique de Genève è partito in testa all’inizio, ma non è riuscito a rimanere in questa posizione per lungo tempo.
“L’equipaggio ha fatto un ottimo lavoro. La differenza oggi era tutta nella velocità delle imbarcazioni. La soluzioni tecniche che hanno adottato su Oracle la rendono molto veloce. Sarebbe stato davvero difficile batterli in una giornata come quella odierna,” ha dichiarato Brad Butterworth, skipper e tattico del team.
La regata è iniziata alle 14.35 con un vento da sud tra 6 e 8 nodi e mare piatto, buone condizioni per i multiscafi da 90 piedi. La boa di bolina era posizionata per 180° a 20 miglia di distanza dalla linea di partenza .
Alinghi, entrando mure a sinistra nell’area di partenza, ha subito una penalità dagli arbitri per non aver dato sufficiente acqua all’avversario che navigava mure a dritta. Nonostante questo l’equipaggio di Alinghi è passato in vantaggio subito dopo, lasciando BMW Oracle Racing fuori dalla linea di partenza completamente fermo.
“Non abbiamo mai avuto la possibilità di incrociare di prua. Abbiamo cercato di farlo, ma non era possibile. Quando ci siamo resi conto della situazione siamo andati al vento e abbiamo virato, ma abbiamo comunque subito la penalità. Siamo rimasti senz’altro sorpresi, ma alla fine l’accaduto non ha avuto alcuna conseguenza sul risultato finale” ha affermato Butterworth.
Alinghi 5 con il presidente del team Ernesto Bertarelli al timone, è partito dalla boa arrivando ad un vantaggio massimo di 1 minuto e 27 secondi, circa 660 metri.
Il catamarano ha tenuto il passo al trimarano per un po’, ma alla fine è stato superato. Alla boa di bolina Alinghi aveva uno svantaggio sul trimarano di 3 minuti e 21 secondi che diventavano 15 minuti e 28 secondi al traguardo, dopo l’esecuzione della penalità per l’infrazione commessa durante pre partenza.
In attesa della prossima regata di domenica, Butterworth ha dichiarato: “Fino a quando sei in regata hai una possibilità. Ci riuniremo domani per riflettere e pensare alla prova di domenica, che sarà diversa da quella di oggi. Vedremo quali saranno le condizioni. Loro sembravano molto veloci di bolina, ed è stato difficile per noi non perdere il contatto. Non sarà facile”.
Il Deed of Gift impone per domani, sabato, una giornata di riposo per cui la prossima regata è in programma per domenica 14 febbraio, condizioni meteo permettendo.
ALINGHI LOOKS TO RACE 2 OF THE 33RD AMERICA’S CUP ON SUNDAY
[Alinghi Press Release] Alinghi lost Race 1 of the 33rd America’s Cup, a best-of-three series, today after a hard fought pre-start and a 40nm race. The Defender from the Société Nautique de Genève took an early lead onto the course, but didn’t hold on to it.
“The crew work went well. The difference was the speed of the boats. The solution they have come up with on Oracle is very fast. It’s pretty hard to beat them on a day like today,” said Brad Butterworth, team skipper and tactician.
The race started at 14:35 in a southerly wind between 6 and 8 knots and flat sea, good conditions for the 90ft load waterline multihulls. The top mark was set at a bearing of 180 degrees, due south, 20nm to windward.
Alinghi, the port-tack yacht entering the start box, was penalised in the pre-start by the on-water umpires for failing to keep clear. But the Alinghi crew took the lead off the start line after BMW Oracle Racing got into “irons”, a predicament where the boat looses steerage.
“We never had a chance to cross them, so it was just one of those things. We tried to get across them but couldn’t. When we realised that was the case we came up and tacked over and got a penalty. That was a bit surprising, but it didn’t have an impact on the race in the end,” said Butterworth.
Alinghi 5, with team president Ernesto Bertarelli at the helm, circled around the pin end and onto the race course for an early 1m27s lead, or approximately 660m. The catamaran held pace with the trimaran early, but eventually was overtaken. Alinghi was behind by 3m21s at the windward mark and 15m28s at the finish after performing a penalty turn for the pre-start infraction.
Looking forward to Sunday, Butterworth said: “As long as you’ve got a life you’ve got a chance. We will regroup and think about race two. Sunday’s race will be a different sort of race. We’ll see what conditions lend themselves. They looked pretty awesome upwind, and it was hard for us to hold them back. We’ll have our work cut out.”
Tomorrow is an off day as per the Deed of Gift, the America’s Cup governing document, so racing will resume on Sunday 14 February weather permitting.
