America’s Cup, la conferenza stampa e il commento di Alinghi

[singlepic id=5121 w=300 h=204 float=left]America’s Cup – Valencia – Alinghi ha messo in campo tutte le sue energie oggi nel tentativo di difendere la 33ma America’s Cup. Il team svizzero, portacolori della Société Nautique de Genève ha controllato l’avversario per la maggior parte del primo lato del percorso a triangolo, ma non è poi riuscito a tenere testa al challenger BMW Oracle Racing e ha perso la regata per 5 minuti e 26 secondi, e la 33a America’s Cup per 2 a 0.
Ernesto Bertarelli, presidente del team e timoniere principale, si è congratulato con l’avversario dopo la regata: “I miei complimenti a BMW Oracle Racing. La loro barca era più veloce, nessun dubbio su questo”.
La regata odierna è stata rinviata per più di sei ore rispetto all’ora prestabilita (10.06), perché il comitato di regata ha atteso che il vento si stabilizzasse, come era successo lo scorso venerdì. Alle 16.10 circa, il comitato di regata ha posizionato la boa di bolina per 100°, e i due equipaggi hanno iniziato la regata alle 16.25. Il Presidente del team Ernesto Bertarelli ha portato Alinghi 5 mure a sinistra a circa metà della linea di partenza. L’equipaggio di Alinghi 5 voleva la destra del campo di regata e l’ha conquistata, poiché confidava in un salto di vento da quella direzione. Dopo circa 14 minuti di regata, Alinghi 5 ha virato mure a dritta e, grazie a un salto di vento favorevole, si è portato al comando. Per i successivi 35 minuti o poco più, entrambe le imbarcazioni hanno navigato mure a dritta, con Alinghi, con Loïck Peyron al timone, sopravvento rispetto al Challenger che continuava a restare in testa grazie al salto di vento.
Alinghi ha incrociato il challenger nei pressi della boa di bolina, ma ha poi perso la leadership proprio al passaggio della stessa boa. Lo sfidante ha quindi preso il comando con 28 secondi di vantaggio alla prima boa e poi, spinto dalla sua ala rigida, ha aumentato il distacco arrivando a più di due minuti nella seconda boa.
Alinghi è stato fondato nel 2000 da Ernesto e ha vinto la 31a America’s Cup al primo tentativo nel 2003, contro Team New Zealand per 5 a 0. In seguito Il team Svizzero ha difeso la 32a America’s Cup a Valencia nel 2007 sempre contro Team New Zealand per 5 a 2.

“La prima cosa che mi viene in mente in questo momento è qualcosa che soltanto chi ha fatto parte di Alinghi negli ultimi dieci anni può comprendere. Nel team c’è un’atmosfera unica, uno spirito unico, un rapporto unico che lega ogni persona che ha lavorato o che in qualche modo ha fatto parte del team, e per questo sono orgoglioso del nostro team e di quello che abbiamo fatto negli ultimi 10 anni”.
Il momento più significativo: “la cosa più importante non è quella di avere il trofeo d’argento tra la proprie mani, ma quella di avere un team di successo, che ha una sua identità, che vince e il cielo sa quanto abbiamo vinto. Se c’è una squadra che negli ultimi anni ha vinto, questa è Alinghi. In queste due ultime regate non abbiamo vinto. Eravamo svantaggiati, non avevamo una barca abbastanza veloce. Ma credo che con quello che avevamo, con le possibilità che avevamo, abbiamo fatto del nostro meglio e abbiamo dimostrato di non mollare mai o di dare forfait. Volevamo batterci al meglio e lo abbiamo fatto. Siamo usciti di scena a testa alta e orgogliosi di ciò che abbiamo fatto”.

“Non sono più io a decidere il futuro della Coppa. Aspetterò di vedere cosa ci riserverà il futuro e poi prenderò una decisione”.
Rolf Vrolijk, progettista capo:
“Tutto il team è dispiaciuto naturalmente. Abbiamo lavorato per raggiungere un obiettivo negli ultimi 10 anni e alla fine vuoi vincere. Tutto quello che fai lo fai per questo motivo. Tutti hanno lavorato al meglio. Sono convinto che abbiamo fatto il meglio che potevamo fare nel tempo che abbiamo avuto a disposizione. Siamo abbastanza contenti delle nostre prestazioni di oggi. Probabilmente se avessimo avuto più tempo, avremmo potuto sicuramente fare di meglio, ma sopravviveremo tutti lo stesso!”.
Brad Butterworth, skipper e tattico del team
“Sicuramente non è piacevole che tutto sia finito in sole due regate, ma di questo bisogna ringraziare Oracle. Quello con cui si sono presentati non era una barca ma un aeroplano. Hanno meritato il risultato finale. Erano molto veloci e hanno regatato bene. Complimenti a tutti loro”.
Sugli ultimi 10 anni: “Sono stati anni eccezionali. Certamente stasera siamo dispiaciuti perché abbiamo perso, ma abbiamo regatato insieme dal 2001 e ora siamo nel 2010. Abbiamo un record eccezionale. Le persone con cui ho lavorato sono fantastiche. Sarà uno dei miei ricordi migliori per sempre”.

AMERICA’S CUP, ALINGHI PRESS CONFERENCE AND COMMENTS
[Alinghi Press Release] Alinghi put forth a tremendous effort today in its attempt to defend the 33rd America’s Cup. The Swiss team from the Société Nautique de Genève led for most of the first leg of the triangular course, but couldn’t hold off the Challenger BMW Oracle Racing. Alinghi lost the race by 5m26s and the America’s Cup Match, 2-0.
Team president and principal helmsman Ernesto Bertarelli congratulated his competitor after the race: “Congratulations to the BMW Oracle team. The boat was faster, there’s no question about that”.
Today’s race was postponed for more than six hours from the scheduled start time of 10:06 as, similar to Friday, the race committee waited for the wind to settle. Around 16.10 the race committee set a windward mark bearing 100 degrees, just south of due east, and the two crews started at 16.25. Bertarelli guided Alinghi 5 onto the race course on port tack about mid-line, despite receiving a penalty. The crew wanted the right side of the course, hoping for the favourable wind shift. Almost 14 minutes into the race Alinghi 5 tacked to starboard and into a right-hand wind shift that lifted the 90ft load waterline catamaran into the lead. For the next 35 minutes or so both boats held starboard tack with Alinghi, now steered by Loïck Peyron, to windward of the challenger and holding the lead in the wind shift.
Alinghi crossed the challenger near the windward mark, but lost the lead when it tacked to port to approach the mark. The challenger led by 28 seconds at the first mark and then, propelled by its wing, increased that lead by more than 2 minutes at the second mark.
Alinghi was created in 2000 by Ernesto Bertarelli and won the 31st America’s Cup at its first try in 2003, defeating Team New Zealand 5-0 to become the first European team to win the Cup. The Swiss team successfully defended the 32nd America’s Cup in Valencia in 2007 defeating Team New Zealand again 5-2.

Most significant moment: “The best part is not actually having the silver trophy, the best thing is having a team which is successful, which has a spirit, which wins…goodness knows we won. If there’s any team over the last 10 years that has won, it’s Alinghi. Now, these last two races we did not win. We were disadvantaged. We didn’t have a boat quite fast enough. But I think with what we were given, with the odds we had, we did our best and we showed we were not going to lie down and give up and forfeit. We just wanted to fight as hard as we could and that’s what we did. We exit with our head high and proud of our achievement so far”.

“The whole team here is of course disappointed. We have worked for this for 10 years and at the end you want to win. That’s why you do this. Everybody did a really good job. I think we did the best we could in the time we had. We’re quite happy the boat today showed some performance against the other boat. Maybe with more time we would have done better, but I think we will all survive again!”.

“We were a bit disappointed the whole thing is over in two races, but you have to hand it to Oracle. What they wound up with is like a plane, not a boat. So they deserve to beat us. They went very fast and sailed well. Give all credit to them”.
On the pre-start penalty: “We had a little problem; the start line was difficult to get to at our end. There were a lot of boats near the port end and we had to gybe around and were late to the starboard end. And that was full of boats too. We were a couple of seconds late and got a penalty, but that wasn’t going to decide the race”.
On the last 10 years: “It’s always been good. Tonight’s a bit of a disappointment because we lost, but we’ve been sailing together since 2001 and here it is 2010. We’ve had a fantastic record. I’ve always enjoyed this team. The people we’ve had are fantastic. It’ll be some of the best memories forever”.
