America’s Cup, la parola a Grant Simmer

[singlepic id=4695 w=300 h=204 float=left]America’s Cup – Ras al Khaimah – Alinghi, il Defender dell’America’s Cup, ha completato oggi la prima fase del programma di sviluppo di Alinghi 5 a Ras Al Khaimah e nei prossimi giorni il maxi catamarano svizzero tornerà in cantiere per essere sottoposto ad alcune modifiche. La prossima fase di test occuperà il team fino al momento della spedizione della barca a Valencia, dove il programma di sviluppo continuerà in vista della prima regata dell’America’s Cup l’8 febbraio 2010.

Alinghi.com ha parlato con Grant Simmer, coordinatore dei progettisti a proposito delle modifiche e dello sviluppo del catamarano.

D: Il team, nelle ultime sei settimane, si è allenato effettuando nel contempo una serie di test, quali sono le aree su cui vi siete concentrati maggiormente e gli obiettivi?
R: Abbiamo cambiato l’albero poco dopo essere arrivati qui, sostituendo il vecchio con uno nuovo più alto. Quindi abbiamo lavorato sul range delle vele da utilizzare alle diverse intensità di vento e imparato quali sono i migliori angoli di navigazione nelle varie andature. Direi che ci siamo concentrati sull’ottimizzazione delle performance e su tutto quello che c’era da imparare sull’utilizzo delle diverse vele.

D: Le condizioni meteo a Ras Al Khaimah sono state quelle giuste per i test e lo sviluppo della barca?
R: Una delle ragioni per le quali siamo venuti qui a Ras Ala Khaimah è stata proprio quella per cui questo posto d’inverno offre delle eccellenti condizioni meteo per navigare. questo è proprio quello che abbiamo avuto modo di sperimentare. Fortunatamente in sei settimane abbiamo perso soltanto due giorni, principalmente perché c’è stato troppo vento. In definitiva le condizioni meteo sono state eccezionali e per il prosieguo non ci aspettiamo che la situazione sia diversa.

D: Puoi darci qualche anticipazione sulle modifiche che saranno fatte su Alinghi 5 nel corso dei prossimi giorni?
R: Direi che lo vedrete alla fine della settimana! Quello che posso dire è che ogni cosa in questa barca è così grande che tutte le modifiche devono essere pianificate per tempo. I nuovi componenti sono stati realizzati a Villeneuve, in Svizzera, dove abbiamo ancora un cantiere operativo (lo stesso che ha costruito la barca). I ragazzi li hanno fatto un ottimo lavoro e spedito queste parti nei tempi previsti, in modo da darci l’opportunità di installarli e di testarli nelle prossime settimane.

D: A questo punto state adattando la barca per le condizioni di Valencia a Febbraio?
R: Da quanto è arrivata la decisione su Valencia come sede di default, abbiamo adattato la barca alla maggiore variabilità prevista su Valencia nel periodo della regata. Naturalmente abbiamo ancora l’appello sulla decisione di RAK, un punto su cui abbiamo molta fiducia perché RAK è in assoluto il miglior posto per regatare con queste imbarcazioni a febbraio, un concetto questo che noi ripetiamo da molto tempo ormai.

D: Quali sono i tuoi programmi per questi giorni liberi di cui potrai godere?
R: mi sto organizzando per trascorrere il fine settimana a Dubai!

[Source Alinghi] The America’s Cup Defender Alinghi is completing its current phase of the Alinghi 5 development programme today in Ras Al Khaimah and over the next few days will wheel the giant catamaran into the boat shed for some modifications. The next phase will keep the team busy up until it ships out to Valencia to continue developing towards the February 8 2010 America’s Cup Match.

Alinghi.com speaks to design team coordinator, Grant Simmer, about the modifications and the development so far.

Q: The team has been testing and training in Ras Al Khaimah for the past six weeks, what have been the main areas of focus and the goals?
A: We changed to the new, bigger, rig soon after we came here and we have been working on our sail crossovers and learning about optimum angles; really just concentrating on learning to sail the boat and optimising the performance.

Q: Have the conditions in Ras Al Khaimah been conducive to the testing and development?
A: One of the reasons we came to Ras Al Khaimah in the first place was that the winter months offer really nice sailing conditions and that is what we have enjoyed here. Luckily we have only lost a couple of days in the six weeks that we have been here and that was mainly due to too much wind. The conditions have been great and very stable so we don’t expect much change from that.

Q: Can you hint at the modifications that will be made to Alinghi 5 over the coming days?
A: Well, you will see them at the end of the week! The thing about this boat is that everything is so massive that you have to plan months in advance to make virtually any component in the boat. We have been manufacturing these pieces in Villeneuve, Switzerland, where we still have a factory (the same one that built the boat) and the boys have done a good job and delivered the parts on time so we will spend next week installing them.

Q: Is adapting the boat for Valencia in February a consideration at this point?
A: Since the decision on Valencia, the default venue, we have been adapting the boat to the increased variability there at the time of the Match. Of course in the background we still have the appeal on the RAK decision, which we feel quite strongly about because RAK is a far better place to race these boats in February; something we have said repeatedly.

Q: Any plans for the few days off?!
A: Actually I plan to take the weekend off to go to Dubai so I’m looking forward to that!
