[singlepic id=5864 w=300 h=200 float=left]Audi MedCup – Marsiglia – Se le prime regate del 2010 del Trofeo del Portogallo-Cascais si sono disputate in acque nuove per il Circuito, le rade di Marsiglia sono invece ben conosciute dai velisti dell’Audi MedCup. L’anno passato, l’evento segnò infatti l’inizio della striscia di vittorie di tappa di Emirates Team New Zealand, ad oggi ancora imbattuto. Saranno dunque in grado i Kiwi di ripetersi anche quest’anno? O I team concorrenti riusciranno finalmente a fermare il monopolio neozelandese, le cui armi in più, fin qui, sono state la costanza e la regolarità?
Emirates Team New Zealand anche per l’evento francese ha cambiato pochissimo nell’equipaggio, mentre molti altri team hanno apportato importanti modifiche. Su tutti, Matador, che ha ingaggiato il nostro Vasco Vascotto in qualità di stratega. Il velista triestino troverà a bordo l’amico Francesco Bruni, tattico del team, con cui formerà una coppia davvero unica: “A Marsiglia mi aspetto vento. E tanto. E poi mi aspetto di iniziare nel migliore dei modi questa avventura, sperando di portare subito un contributo all’equipaggio e di inserirmi al meglio. Per noi l’obiettivo sarà di dimostrare che siamo in grado di far bene nel Circuito Audi MedCup, cercando magari di toglierci un po’ di soddisfazioni vincendo qualche regata”.
L’argentino Santi Lange, doppia medaglia d’oro olimpica, che ha sempre lavorato accanto allo studio di progettazione Juan K Yacht Design, si è invece unito al team britannico di Team Origin 1851, che ha di recente assunto Grant Simmer in qualità di Team Director. Gli inglesi hanno inoltre comunicato di aver eliminato quelle alette sulla chiglia che avevno causato non poche perplessità a Cascais. Infine, l’italiana Luna Rossa vedrà per l’occasione al timone il campione mondiale ed europeo di Melges 24 Lorenzo Bressani, che tenterà di far guadagnare posizioni in classifica a team di Patrizio Bertelli, attualmente al nono posto.
La tappa di Cascais ha dunque provato sia che la flotta dei TP52 è cresciuta ancora di più, sia che le barche di vertice sono davvero molto vicine come performance, con tanti team in lotta per conquistare le prime posizioni. E persino barche vecchie come Cristabella e Bigamist 7 possono dire la loro: a Cascais, infatti, gli inglesi sono stati anche in grado di portarsi in testa alla classifica per una giornata, mentre i portoghesi hanno regalato gioie ai propri tifosi vincendo una regata.
Il tifo di casa, a Marsiglia, sarà invece tutto per il team franco-tedesco di Audi A1 Powered by All4One dello skipper Jochen Schuemann, 4 volte medaglia d’oro alle Olimpiadi, e del timoniere di match race Sebastian Col. Per loro, un’ottima seconda posizione a Cascais. Philippe Mourniac, navigatore del team, ha così dichiarato: “Il nostro obiettivo a Marsiglia non sarà diverso da quello che avevamo in Portogallo: avere un TP52 nel Circuito. L’obiettivo è raggiunto, e ora dobbiamo crescere gradualmente come gruppo. Sappiamo da Cascais che la barca è competitiva, e che se regatiamo bene possiamo portare a casa buoni risultati.”
Novità anche nella GP42 Series
Anche la GP42 Series tornerà a regatare nelle acque di Marsiglia, con i team che essere pronti per la battaglia hanno apportato modifiche alle imbarcazioni e cambiato qualche elemento a bordo. Peninsula Petroleum ha riparato la punta dell’albero rotta durante l’ultimo giorno di regate a Cascais, ma, d’accordo con il tattico Inaki Castaner, hanno deciso di non fare cambiamenti nell’equipaggio. Il team cercherà ora di conquistare risultati importanti per rifarsi dopo lo sfortunato incidente in Portogallo.
Tornerà anche il vincitore del Trofeo del Portogallo, Puerto Calero, con un nuovo boma che sostituirà quello danneggiato durante il trasferimento. Lo skipper Jose Maria Ponce ha inoltre annunciato che Federico Morales e Leonardo Armas saranno di nuovo a bordo, nei ruoli rispettivamente di trimmer di fiocco e trimmer di randa.
Cambiamento anche su Airisessential dello skipper Roberto Monti, con Gabriele Bruni sostituito per questo evento da Roberto Benamati.
Non solo regate
Marsiglia accoglierà il Circuito Audi MedCup proprio nel cuore della città, con le flotte dei TP52 e dei GP42 ormeggiate nel Porto Vecchio a pochi metri dal municipio. Una posizione che permetterà di assistere a scene inusuali, con i velisti che ogni mattina lavoreranno sulle vele direttamente sulla scalinata del municipio.
Il nuovo e ingrandito Villaggio Pubblico dell’Audi MedCup aprirà sabato 12 giugno, con le barche in bella mostra per tutti gli abitanti di Marsiglia. Un’occasione ammirare da pochi metri le barche, fianco a fianco con i velisti più famosi del mondo. Il pubblico potrà inoltre divertirsi con le attrazioni del Villaggio, dai simulatori di guida Audi Driving alle competizioni fra grinder, passando per I giochi dedicati ai più piccoli.
AUDI MEDCUP, DEJA VU IN MARSEILLE
[Audi MedCup Press Release] While the first regatta of 2010, last month’s Portugal Trophy Cascais was contested on waters which were new to the Circuit, Marseille’s Rades are now well known to the regular Circuit contenders. Last year’s TP52 regatta marked the start of Emirates Team New Zealand’s unbroken string of regatta victories. Will the Kiwi team, fresh – or perhaps not so fresh – from a come from behind match racing win in Sardinia complete the full circle and retain the Marseille Trophy, or will another team step up and break the New Zealand silverware monopoly?
Consistency has been the bedrock of the Kiwi success. While they have minimised crew changes, several contenders come to Marseille having made line-up changes. Matador welcomes Vasco Vascotto as strategist to complement the talents of tactician Francesco Bruni.
“For Marseille I expect wind”, says Vascotto “and then I expect to start this new adventure in the best way possible, hoping to enhance the performance of the team overall, and to help the crew as best I possibly can, but also of course we will have time over the season to improve. For us the target is to show that we can do well on the Circuit this season, to take some satisfaction from winning some races.”
Double Olympic medallist Santi Lange, who works closely with the office of Team Origin 1851 designers Juan K Yacht Design, has joined the British team which recently appointed Grant Simmer as team director. Team Origin are reported to have removed the keel winglets which caused a stir in Portugal.
Italy’s Luna Rossa will have past Melges 24 World and European champion Lorenzo Bressani on the helm in Marseille in their bid to improve on the Italian team’s patchy performance in Cascais (9th).
Cascais proved conclusively that the level in the TP52 fleet has risen once again but also that there is very, very little separating the top boats and that no one team can expect to rise to the top on the strength of any one perceived advantage or strength. Older boats such as Cristabella lead the regatta and Bigamist 7 won races.
Home hopes will rest with the Franco-German team on Audi A1 Powered by All4One skippered by Germany’s four times Olympic medallist Jochen Schuemann with French match racer Seb Col on the helm. They finished an excellent second overall in Cascais.
Philippe Mourniac navigator Audi A1 Powered by All4One comments: “Our target in Marseille will not be different to the one we had in Cascais. Our main objective was to have a TP52 on the Circuit. This objective is acheived. After that, we are a team which builds together gradually. We want to have as much time sailing well together as a group. But we know from Cascais that the boat is competitive and that if we sail well we can make good results. The run of results we have had in Cascais show that we have potential. But that does not necessarily mean that we will finish on the podium in Marseille. If it turns out that we finish in the middle of the fleet in Marseille, that also does not mean we have not sailed as well as we did in Cascais.”
Changes also in the GP42 Series
The GP42 Series will heat up once again in Marseille, as teams have made repairs and a few crew changes to be ready for battle. Peninsula Petroleum has repaired the top of their mast broken on the last breezy day in Cascais, and according to tactician Inaki Castañer, there are no crew changes but the team is ready to retrun some strong results after that unfortunate breakdown.
Portugal Trophy winner Puerto Calero will be back, but this time with a new boom since theirs was damaged in shipping transit. Skipper Jose Maria Ponce also reports that Federico Morales and Leonardo Armas are back on the boat as the jib and main trimmer, respectively.
Another crew change is on Airisessential, where skipper Roberto Monti reports the team’s tactician Gabriele Bruni will be replaced for this event by Roberto Benamati.
Not only racing
Marseille has long since taken the Audi MedCup Circuit to its heart. The TP52 and GP42 Series fleets line up only meters from the Mairie – the town hall – right in the centre of the Vieux Port. Indeed it is not unusual to see the crews drying and folding spinnakers on the steps of the town hall each morning!
The new, enlarged Audi MedCup Public Village will open from Saturday 12th June where the fleets will be lined up for promenaders to enjoy a very close look at the boats and meet and mingle with the sailors. Among the interactive attractions are the Audi Driving games, grinding competitions, and games and activities for younger visitors.
