Audi MedCup, ipoteca dei kiwi sul Trofeo del Portogallo

Audi MedCup – Cascais – Regata costiera senza storia, quella disputata oggi nelle acque dell’Oceano Atlantico. Con quasi 25 nodi di vento, e ben 40 miglia percorse, ancora una volta infatti Emirates Team New Zealand dimostra la propria superiorità sul resto della flotta, andando a vincere la prova odierna davanti a Matador e ad Audi A1 powered by All4One. Per i Kiwi, secondi dopo il bastone iniziale, è bastato dunque soltanto un bordo per portarsi in testa alla regata, gestendo poi il vantaggio senza grandi problemi durante il resto della prova. Emirates Team New Zealand, con 27.5 punti, può così allungare nella classifica del Trofeo del Portogallo-Cascais, portandosi, quando mancano due regate al termine, a 14 lunghezze di vantaggio sui nuovi inseguitori, i franco tedeschi di Audi A1 powered by All4One (41.5 punti).
Salgono Schuemann e Cayard, scende Ainslie
Grazie al terzo posto nella costiera, e alla pessima prestazione di TeamOrigin, che conclude la regata in nona posizione, Jochen Schuemann e compagni salgono dunque al secondo posto solitario. Una grande soddisfazione, dopo le belle prove di ieri, per il team con a bordo il nostro Paolo Bassani. Felicità anche per Artemis, con Paul Cayard al timone, che con la quarta posizione di oggi sale sul gradino più basso del podio (42 punti), lontano soltanto mezza lunghezza dal team di Jochen Schuemann. Ma la vera sorpresa di oggi, in negativo, è proprio la nona posizione degli inglesi di TeamOrigin. Il team di Ben Ainslie, in testa per la prima parte della regata, crolla letteralmente nel passaggio davanti a Cabo Raso, e posizione dopo posizione termina la regata al nono posto. I britannici, con 42.5 punti, scivolano così dal secondo al quarto posto della classifica generale. Con tre team in un solo punto, la lotta nel gruppo degli inseguitori dei Kiwi si fa sempre più serrata.
Riscatto Matador, delusione Synergy
Dopo una lotta con Audi A1 durante tutta la regata, ottimo secondo posto dunque per Matador, unico team in grado oggi di dare un po’ di filo da torcere ad Emirates Team New Zealand. Per Francesco Bruni e compagni, che hanno concluso con soltanto un minuto e 11 di svantaggio dai Kiwi, è arrivata finalmente una giornata positiva, che permette loro di risalire in classifica generale, portandosi con 52 punti dalla nona alla sesta posizione. Davanti a loro, con 49 punti, si piazza il team di Synergy, deludente oggi dopo le belle prove degli scorsi giorni. I russi, decimi nella costiera, scivolano così dal terzo al quinto posto.
Giornata no di Luna Rossa
Regata storta, oggi, per il team di Patrizio Bertelli. L’equipaggio non brilla fin dall’inizio, e dopo essere uscito in ultima posizione dal bastone, non riesce a rimontare il grande svantaggio rimediato, terminando la costiera all’undicesimo posto. Luna Rossa, con 61.5 punti, perde una posizione in classifica, scendendo al nono posto del Trofeo del Portogallo-Cascais.
Nella GP42 Series Puerto Calero a un passo dal titolo
Altra giornata positiva per il team spagnolo di Puerto Calero, che con una vittoria e un terzo posto nelle due regate di oggi, si porta a 11 punti e può così allungare sui rivali di Madrid-Caser Seguros, che oggi hanno conquistato un quarto e un secondo posto. L’equipaggio capitanato da Paolo Cian si trova ora, con 17 punti, a sei lunghezze di distacco dai leader. La seconda vittoria di giornata è andata invece a Iberdrola, in gara 1, che ha potuto così consolidare il terzo posto in classifica a 20 punti. Alti e bassi invece per AIRISESSENTIAL: la barca italiana, dopo un secondo posto in gara 1, ha chiuso infatti la seconda regata solo in quarta posizione.
Domani è il giorno della verità
Nella TP52 Series, tanta attesa dunque per le regate di domani, con due prove ancora da disputarsi. Se il primo posto di Emirates Team New Zealand, in testa con 14 punti di vantaggio sull’equipaggio di Jochen Schuemann, sembra quasi inarrivabile, la lotta per il secondo posto è più che mai aperta, con ben tre team (Audi A1, Artemis e TeamOrigin) racchiusi in un solo punto. Tre invece le regate previste per la GP42 Series, con Puerto Calero chiamato a difendere i sei punti di vantaggio in classifica. AUDI MEDCUP, EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND ONE STEP FROM THE SUCCESS
[Audi MedCup Press Release] After they took the lead around the most westerly turning mark, off Cabo Raso, they were never challenged, heading the fleet all the way down to the eastern extremity which was at the historic Belem Tower in Lisbon’s River Tajo.
Winning by one and a half minutes, the current champions extended their overall lead to a solid 14 points at the head of the regatta leaderboard as Team Origin, slipped from second place overall to fourth after they could only make a frustrating ninth place today.
The Kiwi team’s only minor hiccup was blowing out a gennaker at the Cabo Raso turn, but they very quickly regrouped and were able to dominate on the long and very spectacular full speed run downwind in the strong northerly wind which gusted over 25 knots.
It was a demanding coastal race in every respect, finishing only 100 metres off the Marina of Cascais breakwater, where the wind carried the imprint of the buildings behind and so there was some place changing and interest until the end.
Matador steered by Guilermo Parada with Francesco Bruni calling tactics made their biggest gains on this long run from the Cape and held on to second place all way round to the finish line, helping their climb back up the table to lie sixth overall.
But the frustration for Team Origin will be to investigate why they slipped progressively down the fleet. They sailed a good race from a tactical point of view and lead early in the race, chasing Emirates Team New Zealand around the westernmost turn. But by the time they passed Cascais again they has already slipped three places, passed on both sides.
A ninth place finish does not do justice to their sailing as a crew today. Team Origin’s team director Mike Sanderson admitted later ‘we just fell off the planet’ but that they felt they were slow before that turn, on the top of the upwind leg as well as on the long downwind, but they are looking at all options.
Third place across the finish line today elevates the Franco-German Audi A1 powered by All4One, skippered by Germany’s Jochen Schuemann, up to second overall but they are only half a point ahead of Sweden’s Artemis, with Team Origin another half point behind them. Emirates Team New Zealand just need a solid day, a contrast to their opening here last Wednesday, to secure their fifth Audi MedCup Circuit Regatta in a row.
GP42 Series Puerto Calero pulls further out front
The breeze-on 20-25 knot conditions today were favorable to the Canarias-based Puerto Calero team, who have pulled out to a 6-point lead over the nearest rival, Madrid-Caser Seguros after seven races sailed. Their choice of a smaller heavy-weather jib looked wrong for the first race’s 15-20 knot conditions, but certainly came into its own in the second race’s gusty 25 knot blasts coming off the Cascais shoreline.
The first race saw the Iberdrola team showing off their America’s Cup heritage, with flawless tactics and boathandling vaulting them into the lead ahead of Airisessential.
In the second race, Peninsula Petroleum shook off the dust of a poor first race to win the start at the pin end and take an early lead, but the huge puffs rolling down the course put Puerto Calero into their own with that small jib, allowing them to take a lead they never relinquished. Airisessential also got back into the fray with much-improved crew work downwind and good pace upwind, but a broach suffered just after the last gybe into the finish pushed them back to fourth, behind Madrid-Caser Seguros and Peninsula Petroleum.
