Audi MedCup, Marsiglia e il Mistral danno il benvenuto alle flotte

Audi MedCup 2009 – Marsiglia – Tutto è finalmente pronto per il Trofeo di Marsiglia, seconda tappa del Circuito Audi MedCup 2009. Ad ospitare l’evento, che si terrà dal 9 al 14 giugno, è la bellissima città francese, che già l’anno scorso aveva regalato ai velisti e al pubblico spettacolari regate caratterizzate da un Mistral sempre molto forte. E già dalle prime ore del mattino, nella splendida cornice del Port Vieux, con la sua Promenade e il Municipio, il Villaggio Audi MedCup ha cominciato ad animarsi, mettendo in mostra tutte le attrazioni dedicate al pubblico.

Tutti coloro che non potranno essere presenti di persona all’evento, potranno comunque vivere virtualmente il circuito Audi MedCup 2009, grazie al sito costantemente aggiornato con informazioni, breaking news e interviste, mentre per seguire le gare, il Virtual Eye proietterà tutti gli appassionati direttamente sul campo di regata.

Per quanto riguarda la TP52 Series, che prenderà il via domani con la Practice Race (mercoledì, invece, la prima regata ufficiale), sono 11 i team iscritti al Trofeo di Marsiglia. Rispetto alla precedente tappa, mancano infatti Marazzi Sailing ed El Desafio, che ha ceduto la propria barca a Cristabella, assente ad Alicante. Grande attesa dunque per le regate, che già ad Alicante avevano fatto registrare un livello tecnico altissimo e molto simile fra tutti i team. Non è un caso, infatti, se il Trofeo Città di Alicante si era deciso solo all’ultimo bordo dell’ultima regata, con ben 4 squadre in lizza per la vittoria finale: Matador, Artemis, Emirates Team New Zealand e Quantum Racing.

A spuntarla nelle acque spagnole, è stato il team argentino di Matador, con il nostro Francesco Bruni alla tattica, le cui scelte si sono rivelate determinanti per la vittoria finale. Tanta attesa in questi giorni per vedere di nuovo all’opera anche Emirates Team New Zealand, che ad Alicante aveva alternato grandi prove a prestazioni decisamente meno esaltanti, che l’hanno portato a consegnare a Matador la leadership del Trofeo proprio nell’ultima gara, accontentandosi del terzo posto. Dietro anche ad Artemis, con Russel Coutts alla tattica.

Per quanto riguarda i team italiani, Vasco Vascotto a bordo di Pisco Sour è chiamato a confermare quanto di buono aveva fatto vedere in Spagna, cercando di migliorare ulteriormente i risultati ottenuti ad Alicante, con due terzi posti conquistati in regata e un sesto posto finale davvero incoraggiante. “Marsiglia è un campo tra i più maschi del Mediterraneo – ha dichiarato Vascotto – quando entra il maestrale gli equipaggi devono lavorare molto di muscoli. Siamo concentrati al punto giusto, ci attende una settimana intensa e vitale per la classifica. La concomitanza con altre regata ci ha costretti a dei cambi in corsa: è arrivato Bruno Zirilli come navigatore, è rientrato Cesare Bozzetti nel ruolo di trimmer e Piero Romeo alle maniglie”. Tanta attesa anche per vedere all’opera Audi TP52 Powered by Q8, pronto alla riscossa dopo la tappa di Alicante.

Nella GP42 Series, confermate le sei barche iscritte anche alla prima tappa. A Marsiglia, i team italiani di Airis e Roma 2 del timoniere Paolo Cian, fresco vincitore della tappa coreana del circuito mondiale di match race, sono pronti a contendersi la vittoria del Trofeo, cercando di non ripetere gli errori commessi in Spagna, quando per un pasticcio tattico nell’ultima prova hanno consegnato la vittoria a Islas Canarias Puerto Calero. Che anche in Francia cercherà di dare il meglio di sé per difendere il primo posto in classifica: “Siamo impazienti di salire a bordo – ha dichiarato Jose Ponce, timoniere di Islas Canarias – visto che non abbiamo avuto molto tempo per navigare. Qui troveremo più vento che ad Alicante, ma la nostra barca dovrebbe reagire bene anche con più aria. Dobbiamo solo riuscire a trovare il giusto tuning”. La GP42 Series inizierà mercoledì con la Practice Race, mentre la prima regata ufficiale è prevista per giovedì.

[Audi MedCup Press Release] The Rade Sud dealt great conditions when the Audi MedCup Circuit raced here in 2008. An encore in 2009 would be welcome. Marseille’s Rade Sud is one of the most challenging race areas on the Audi MedCup Circuit.

Tightly bordered to the west by the Iles Frioul – the Ile Pomègues and the Ile Ralonneau – and the mainland to the east, the natural amphitheatre is watched by a whole collection of historic landmarks, not least the iconic Notre Dame de La Garde church which defines the Marseille skyline.

Even the Chateau d’If, on a small somewhat randomly placed islet on the fringe of the race arena, a former penal colony where the Count of Monte Cristo was set, has an influence on the breeze and racers’ strategies.

It’s an intoxicating setting for the second Audi MedCup Circuit regatta of the 2009 season, the second time that the Circuit has been hosted by the sailing savvy highly cosmopolitan city.

But in sailing terms Marseille is synonymous with the famous blustery Mistral winds. Last year’s Marseille Trophy regatta was visited by the Mistral, strong breezes to produce some of the most exciting conditions of the season, one contributing reason that the Circuit is back, hopefully for more.

“The one thing about the race area here is that there is no simple formula for this week. We could see a little bit of everything, maybe with some Mistral on Friday. Honestly it will not be simple at all, they are not classic conditions at all.” Confirms Dimitri Deruelle, 1992 French Olympian in the 470 class and currently 470 and 49er coach who is offering local input to the Emirates Team New Zealand challenge in Marseille.

Tuesday’s TP52 Practise Race for the eleven TP52 Series is preceded today by a muscular 23 knots of breeze out on the Rade Sud.
Alberto Roemmers’ Matador (ARG) team, who top the Audi MedCup Circuit leaderboard after winning the City of Alicante Trophy last month, know how fragile their one point lead is, as do those crews who are in hot pursuit.
British crew Cristabella, who missed Alicante, return to the fray after just one day sailing with a full crew on their new boat, the former El Desafio.

Only two points separate the top three TP52’s. Torbjorn Tornqvist’s Artemis (SWE) lies second by one point and Emirates Team New Zealand are third on the table.

Racing begins for the TP52 Series again on Wednesday with three planned windward-leewards. The coastal race is scheduled for Friday with racing concluding on Sunday.

The GP42 Series is equally delicately poised after Daniel Calero’s team stole victory in the dying minutes of the final race in Alicante with Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP) leading by a single point too. All six boats which contested the City of Alicante Trophy resume their rivalries on Wednesday with the GP42 Series’ Practice Race, before GP42 Series points are up for grabs again on Thursday. The GP42’s do not race a Coastal Race.
