[singlepic=2687,300,204,,left]Audi MedCup 2009 – Marsiglia – Si riempiono pian piano gli approdi di Marsiglia in vista della seconda tappa dell’Audi MedCup che prenderà il via la prossima settimana. L’attenzione del pubblico è in gran parte concentrata su Matador, leader della classifica tra i TP52 in virtù del successo ottenuto ad Alicante.
Le acque francesi, però, portano alla mente ricordi dolorosi per l’equipaggio di Guillermo Parada e di Francesco Bruni, costretti a disertare l’ultima giornata di regate della scorsa edizione del Trofeo Città di Marsiglia a causa di una violenta collisione a tre avvenuta in occasione di un giro di boa della regata costiera.
Ma Alberto Roemmers, armatore di Matador, è fiducioso che tutto possa andare per il meglio dopo aver visto i suoi ragazzi vincere il Trofeo Città di Alicante proprio sul filo di lana. Come spiega Simon Fry, regolatore delle vele di prua: “Abbiamo fatto cose buone e cose meno buone, ma allo scadere siamo riusciti a trovare il bandolo della matassa e a fare nostro il successo. Dobbiamo far si che questo diventi la normalità. Sappiamo ad esempio di poter manovrare ancor meglio. Abbiamo alcuni video dei top team da studiare per migliorarci”.
“Sappiamo di poter contare su una barca molto veloce, anche se siamo un pò preoccupati di come se la può cavare con il vento sotto gli 8 nodi. Abbiamo lavorato molto sull’albero e sulla forma della randa e credo che potremmo essere più competitivi anche in quelle condizioni”.
“Del resto devi essere al top per puntare al massimo. Qui vincere non è mai facile, ci sono team fortissimi, con grande esperienza”.
MATADOR, ONE YEAR LATER
[Source Audi MedCup] With the regatta village for the Marseille Trophy now open to visitors in the centre of the Vieux Port, attention is focused on one of the first TP52s to arrive here, Audi MedCup TP52 Series leaders Matador.
The waters off the historic French city hold some painful memories for the current leaders.
They had to miss the final days of the Marseille Trophy regatta last season after they suffered damage in one of two collisions at an incredible windward mark rounding on the coastal race, which required three boats to retire with damage.
But Roemmers’ team arrive here in Marseille rested and full of confidence after having won the City of Alicante Trophy, the first regatta of the 2009 Audi MedCup Circuit TP52 Series, on the last day.
Explains Matador’s trimmer Simon Fry (GBR): “We did some things well and some not so well, at times. On the last day we pieced it all together. What we now need to do is make sure that that becomes the norm. When we got our manoeuvres right we seemed to do them very well. But other teams showed higher levels of technique in some areas. So we have some video to study and will be working hard to advance in those areas.”
“We have a little time before racing starts in Marseille. The most important thing is to have a fast boat under you and we seem to have that. Our worry was going to be in the real light stuff, under eight knots, but we have made some rig adjustments and to the way we set up the mainsail and I think we are relatively good now.”
Matador leads the TP52 Series after their fantastic last-minute win at the City of Alicante Trophy. But the Argentine flagged team has seen on the Circuit how hard it can be to keep up the winning momentum in this white hot fleet. And so, when it comes to Wednesday next week when points are up for grabs again, the Matador team’s approach will reflect their cautious optimism as Fry explains: “They say you can’t win a regatta on the first day but you can certainly lose it, so we will just be going out to get three ‘counters’.”
“Every year the standard of the TP52 become more professional. For me if you look at the difference between 2006 and now it is incredible. And Team New Zealand have a whole America’s Cup level of expertise on hand.” Fry concludes.
