Audi MedCup, sono Quantum e Iberdrola i re di Marsiglia

[singlepic id=6291 w=300 h=200 float=left]Audi MedCup – Marsiglia – È stata una tappa complicata, quella di Marsiglia, con poco vento a inizio settimana e quasi 40 nodi d’aria negli ultimi due giorni di regate. Il comitato, pur avendole tentate tutte, è riuscito a dare il via a sei prove soltanto, caratterizzate però da un altissimo spettacolo.
Il ritorno di Quantum Racing
Nella TP52 Series, è stato dunque Quantum Racing ad aggiudicarsi il titolo: per gli americani, 22.5 punti in classifica, sono arrivate ben tre vittorie di regata, con il team di Terry Hutchinson capace anche di aggiudicarsi una difficile regata costiera. La conquista di un Trofeo mancava a Quantum Racing dalla stagione 2008, quando vinsero il mondiale di classe poco dopo la vittoria della tappa di Portimao. Niente da fare, dunque, per Matador (pt. 27), secondo classificato con 4.5 lunghezze di distacco dai vincitori.
Mezzo pieno il bicchiere argentino
Con una vittoria in prova quattro, e sempre nei primi quattro classificati, salvo che per una sfortunata regata terminata in ultima posizione, il team argentino può ritenersi decisamente soddisfatto della prova di Marsiglia, soprattutto per il netto miglioramento rispetto all’evento di Cascais. Buono, quindi, l’esordio di Vasco Vascotto nel ruolo di stratega accanto al tattico Francesco Bruni.
Schuemann è sempre lì
Terza posizione a 29.5 punti per Audi A1 Powered by All4One, che dopo la bella prestazione portoghese, a Marsiglia si è confermato essere uno dei team più in forma del Circuito. Con tre secondi posti, all’equipaggio franco-tedesco è mancata solo la vittoria a coronare la bella settimana di regate. Audi A1 Powered by All4One, secondo a Cascais e terzo qui a Marsiglia, è stato inoltre l’unico team capace di salire sul podio in entrambe le tappe.
Tradiscono i kiwi e Team Origin
Quarto posto a pari merito a 31 punti per Emirates Team New Zealand e Team Origin 1851, a dispetto di quanti pensassero a questi due team come ai favoriti per la vittoria. Se Team Origin 1851 ha ancora da lavorare sulle manovre, con tanti errori commessi dai britannici, per i kiwi la defaillance può essere riconducibile alla barca meno adatta a correre con poco vento. Il team neozelandese era comunque in netta ripresa (10-6-5-4-3-2 la serie di posizionamenti), anche se Dean Barker & Co. ci avevano abituati a prestazioni ben diverse. I kiwi interrompono dunque la serie di cinque vittorie consecutive iniziata nel 2009 proprio qui a Marsiglia.
Luna Rossa e Artemis
Nona posizione in classifica per Luna Rossa, unica barca italiana della TP52 Series, dietro a Synergy, Bribon e Cristabella, e davanti a un Artemis, ultimo, che ha davvero deluso. Miglior risultato marsigliese per Paul Cayard e compagni, un sesto posto in gara 4. Davvero troppo poco per un team che dopo il primo evento si trovava in terza posizione.
Grande Iberdrola, delude Puerto Calero
Grande settimana per il team spagnolo di Iberdrola, capace di andare a vincere la tappa con due punti di vantaggio su Madrid-Caser Seguros. In netta ripresa, con due vittorie nelle ultime due prove, il team con Paolo Cian al timone, ora sempre più fiducioso per il continuo del Circuito. Terza posizione, ottima, per Airisessential, la barca italiana con Gabriele Benussi alla tattica. Delusione per Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, solo quarto a Marsiglia e in evidente difficoltà dopo il dominio di Cascais. Il team spagnolo, con 31 punti, rimane comunque in testa al Circuito, davanti a Iberdrola (pt. 35) e Madrid-Caser Seguros (pt. 36)
Nel circuito Audi A1 Powered by All4One si avvicina ai kiwi
Dopo la tappa di Marsiglia, il team di Jochen Schuemann riesce dunque ad avvicinarsi in classifica generale ad Emirates Team New Zealand, sempre in testa al Circuito con 62.5 punti. Sono 18.5, ora i punti di svantaggio di Audi A1 Powered by All4One. Sale invece in terza posizione Quantum Racing, staccato ora di una sola lunghezza dal team franco-tedesco. Quarto posto per Matador, davanti a Team Origin 1851. Scivola invece in ottava posizione Artemis, con Luna Rossa nona.
Appuntamento a Barcellona
Dopo la consegna dei premi nel villaggio pubblico, le due Series hanno salutato la città di Marsiglia, dandosi appuntamento in Spagna per il Trofeo Conde de Godó Città di Barcellona, in programma nella città catalana dal 20 al 25 luglio.

AUDI MEDCUP, FADE TO GREEN…
[Audi MedCup Press Release] Quantum Racing’s victory in the TP52 Series fleet is their first event win overall since becoming 2008 TP52 World Champions in Puerto Calero, and their first Audi MedCup Circuit regatta triumph since they sealed the 2008 overall title winning the Portugal Trophy in September 2008.
The 2007 and 2008 GP42 Circuit title winners Iberdrola leave Marseille buoyed up for the rest of the season by their first ever Audi MedCup regatta win.
It was the Mistral which prevailed on the final day of scheduled racing. Out on Marseille’s Rade race areas the notorious winds whipped spumes of spray and kicked up a nasty swell. With gusts close to 40 knots it always seemed unlikely that the Marseille Trophy fleet would leave the dock in the Vieux Port. For all that, the Quantum Racing team were never far from their boat and always poised to go and do whatever needed to be done.
Skipper-helm Terry Hutchinson acknowledged the good work of his team, not least in the behind the scenes industry from their boat-builder, from Quantum Sails themselves and the designers Botin Carkeek, which have all contributed to the 2008 champions upping their game on last year. Winning two races and, for the second year in a row, the coastal race, formed the solid foundations for the Quantum Racing victory composed over just six races sailed.
Their win halts the Emirates Team New Zealand run at five successive regattas which they set off here in Marseille last year. The American crew finished 4.5 points clear of second placed Matador.
Keys to the Quantum Racing success have been consistently good starting, strong tactics and improved boat speed, whilst the reigning champions Emirates Team New Zealand will rue a high scoring opening day when they amassed 21 of their 31 points, finishing fourth overall, their worst finish ever on the Audi MedCup Circuit. But on the overall standings for the 2010 Audi MedCup Circuit, the Kiwis’ 20 points lead which they came to France with has only been eroded by 1.5 points.
When it comes to consistency the Franco-German team on Audi A1 Powered by All4One have been the class act of the season so far. Second in Cascais, the team headed by Jochen Schuemann and Sebastien Col, took third place here and lie second overall on the 2010 Audi MedCup Circuit standings.
First MedCup win for Iberdrola
With no racing today, Iberdrola two point lead ensured they won the Marseille Trophy in the GP42 Series, also promoting themselves up to second overall on the GP42 Series overall standings behind Islas Canarias Puerto Calero. The bright-green machine led by skipper Laureano Wizner has shown to be fast in light air, so those conditions in the first day of racing enable her double wins in Races 1 and 2.
Day Two’s big breeze and big seas suited Madrid-Caser Seguros, whose strong finishes of 2-1–1 then were still not quite enough to get this team, led by skipper Jose Maria van der Ploeg and helmsman Paolo Cian, to the top of the leaderboard.
The total number of races sailed in Marseille amounts to only five, the silver liming for Peninsula Petroleum, whose broken masthead crane could not be repaired after its break in Race 3. This will leave more races in the future available for this team, led by Gibraltar-based owner/helmsman John Bassadone and tactician Iñaki Castaner, to play catch-up to the fleet for the remainder of the series.
The Conde de Godó City of Barcelona Trophy is the next regatta of the Audi MedCup Circuit 20-25 July in the Catalan capital.
