Louis Vuitton Trophy, dieci team pronti per La Maddalena

[singlepic id=5366 w=300 h=204 float=left]Louis Vuitton Trophy – La Maddalena – I più conosciuti e più importanti velisti del mondo arriveranno in Italia alla fine di maggio: teatro delle gare sarà la Sardegna, che si sta preparando per ospitare i 10 team più forti per disputare il Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena, in programma dal 22 maggio al 6 giugno.
Saranno ben tre i team italiani in gara: Mascalzone Latino Audi Team, team ospitante, Azzurra e Luna Rossa.
Tutti si daranno battaglia l’uno contro l’altro nelle meravigliose acque dell’Arcipelago maddalenino a partire dal Defender della Coppa America, BMW Oracle Racing, ed il sempre super favorito Emirates Team New Zealand.
In occasione della manifestazione si è sviluppato un formato di regata innovativo, che consentirà a tutti i team grandi opportunità di avanzare alla fase successiva, e i team che si comportano bene saranno premiati con ulteriori opportunità.
All’inizio della competizione, ogni team regaterà contro tutti gli altri una volta in un solo Round Robin. Gli otto team meglio piazzati avanzeranno alla fase successiva e le posizioni conquistate nel round robin saranno utilizzate nelle fasi successive. Un buon piazzamento nel Round Robin tornerà quindi utile più avanti.
“È molto importante che ogni team si scontri contro gli altri almeno una volta – dice Peter Luigi Reggio, il Principal Race Officer della regata – I team vogliono quest’opportunità”.
Nella fase intermedia della competizione, i team meglio piazzati saranno accoppiati contro quelli con il piazzamento peggiore – che rappresenta un vantaggio per chi ha regatato bene all’inizio – e i team vincenti avanzeranno alle semifinali e quindi alle finali.
“Se i team meglio piazzati nella prima fase (il Round Robin) perderanno nella fase intermedia, avranno a disposizione una seconda opportunità per rientrare in gara. All’opposto, se un team che aveva un brutto piazzamento inizia a vincere, continuerà a gareggiare. È un formato di regata interessante ed equo”.
I team regateranno a bordo di quattro barche uguali di Classe Coppa America fornite dall’organizzazione: ITA-90, ITA-99, USA-87 e USA-98. Le barche sono arrivate a La Maddalena e saranno messe a punto in questi giorni per la regata.
Anche il team che sta organizzando la logistica sta già lavorando a La Maddalena per preparare l’accoglienza ai 10 team, ai loro amici, alle famiglie, ai partner e agli sponsor, oltre che ai tifosi di vela che arriveranno da tutto il mondo.
La Maddalena è una piccola città (con una popolazione di circa 12mila persone) su un’isola che porta il suo stesso nome; si trova appena un miglio nautico a nord-est della Sardegna ed offre uno dei paesaggi più incantevoli del Mediterraneo per regatare.
Il villaggio della regata sarà ad un chilometro ad est rispetto al centro della città, in prossimità dell’angolo sudest dell’isola.
I 10 team che gareggeranno al Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena rappresentano otto nazioni:

– Team Origin, GBR, skipper Ben Ainslie
L’inizio del round robin è fissato il 22 maggio, mentre i team inizieranno gli allenamenti il 18 maggio.
LOUIS VUITTON TROPHY, TEN TEAMS READY FOR LA MADDALENA
[Louis Vuitton Trophy Press Release] Three Italian entries, including the host Mascalzone Latino Audi Team, Azzurra and Luna Rossa will be battling with teams such as the Defender of the America’s Cup, BMW Oracle Racing and perennial favourite Emirates Team New Zealand, for supremacy on the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
An innovative regatta format has been developed that will allow all teams the greatest opportunity to advance to the next step, while rewarding teams who do well with second chances.
Initially, each team will sail every other team once in a single round robin. The top eight teams will advance to the next stage and the round robin seeding will continue to be used in later stages. Doing well in the round robin will have its rewards.
“Having each of the teams sail each other at least once is very important,” said Peter ‘Luigi’ Reggio, the Principal Race Officer for the regatta. “The teams really want this opportunity.”
In the middle elimination rounds, top-ranked teams are matched against the lower ranked teams – that’s one of the rewards for doing well early – and the winning teams keep advancing, through to a semi final and final.
“If a top seed loses in the middle rounds, they’ll get a second chance to earn a way back in. Conversely, if a lower ranked team gets hot and starts winning, they’ll keep racing. It’s an interesting and fair format.”
The teams will race on four equalised America’s Cup Class boats supplied by the event – ITA-90, ITA-99, USA-87 and USA-98. The boats have now arrived on site and will be prepared for racing.
The logistics team is also now working in La Maddalena as the event organisers begin preparations to host the 10 teams, their friends, families, partners and sponsors, as well as sailing fans from around the world.
La Maddalena is small town (population near 12 000) on an island with the same name that sits just one nautical mile off the Northeast coast of Sardinia and offers up some of the most stunning backdrops for sailing in the Mediterranean.
The race village will be set up about one kilometre to the east of the centre of town, near the southeast corner of the island.
The 10 teams competing in the Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena represent eight countries:

Racing in the Round Robin is scheduled to start on the 22nd May, with teams training on site beginning on the 18th May.
