Poco più di un anno fa si è regatato in questo nuovo tipo di eventi proprio ad Auckland: erano di scena le Louis Vuitton Pacific Series. Dieci dei migliori team al mondo, incluso l’attuale challenger (BMW Oracle Racing) ed il defender (Alinghi) dell’America’s Cup, hanno preso parte per oltre due settimane a regate match race disputate su due coppie di barche fornite dall’organizzazione. Queste barche altro non erano che quelle di tipo ACC (America’s Cup Class) utilizzate nell’ultima Coppa America e tutti i team hanno gareggiato a rotazione sulle quattro barche in base ad un sorteggio quotidiano.
La formula è stata poi rinnovata nel Louis Vuitton Trophy Nizza nel novembre scorso, un evento il cui risultato economico derivato dalla copertura media è stimato in oltre nove milioni di euro, generati da oltre 1.200 articoli e da 354 ore di programmazione TV su 400 canali in 163 Pesi. La prossima regata sarà il Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland dal 9 al 21 marzo 2010.
A seguito dell’ampio successo della regata disputatasi agli antipodi lo scorso anno, gli organizzatori dell’evento, la World Sailing Teams Association (WSTA) insieme alla Città di Auckland, hanno deciso di modificare le date per aumentare lo spettacolo. La regata, che si disputa appunto dal 9 al 21 marzo, sarà nello stesso luogo e in concomitanza con l’Auckland International Boatshow (10-14 marzo) nel Viaduct Basin, al centro della città di Auckland, sede delle edizioni di Coppa America nel 2000 e nel 2003.
I team della WSTA iscritti al Louis Vuitton Trophy di Auckland provengono da sette paesi. Diversamente dallo scorso anno, il team ospitante, Emirates Team New Zealand dello skipper Dean Barker, non otterrà un passaggio automatico alla finale, ma dovrà guadagnarne il diritto attraverso le selezioni dei round robin e quindi la vittoria di una delle due semifinali.
Gli altri sette team che aspirano al medesimo accesso in finale e alla vittoria dell’evento sono:

Dopo il Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland, i team della WSTA regateranno a La Maddalena, Sardegna (22 maggio–6 giugno) e poi a Dubai, UAE (13–27 novembre) prima dell’evento di Hong Kong in calendario all’inizio del 2011 (9–24 gennaio 2011).
Alla conferenza stampa che si è tenuta la scorsa settimana a Dubai, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Presidente di DIMC, oltre che Presidente e Direttore Generale di Emirates Airline, ha spiegato che il Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai si disputerà a Mina Seyahi, la sede del Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), vicino al famoso Palm Jumeirah.
“Questa è una grande occasione per Dubai. Siamo onorati di far parte di questo fantastico evento che in breve tempo è diventato un appuntamento sportivo rinomato, seguito da milioni di persone in tutto il mondo”.
Yves Carcelle, Presidente e CEO di Louis Vuitton, ha dichiarato: “Louis Vuitton è presente a Dubai da più di 10 anni. Siamo entusiasti di proseguire questo rapporto nel 2010 con un grande evento di vela, ed allo stesso tempo rafforzare la tradizione di lunga data di Dubai nelle regate”.
LOUIS VUITTON TROPHY, EIGHT TEAMS ON THE ROAD TO AUCKLAND
[Louis Vuitton Trophy Press Relase] Just over a year ago the inaugural regatta was sailed in Auckland, the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series. Ten of the best sailing teams in the world, including the current Challenger and Defender of the America’s Cup, competed over two weeks in a match race regatta in two pairs of supplied boats. The boats used were ACC yachts from the 2007 America’s Cup and all teams rotated through the four boats.
The formula was renewed at the Louis Vuitton Trophy Nice regatta in November last year, a regatta whose provisional media return resulted in a value of over nine million Euros gathered from over 1200 articles, 354 hours of TV on 400 channels in 163 countries. The next regatta will be the Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland from 9–21 March 2010.
Following the success of last year’s antipodean regatta the event organisers, the World Sailing Teams Association (WSTA), along with the city of Auckland decided to adjust the dates to enhance the public spectacle. The regatta, which runs from 9-21 March, will be staged from the same venue and at the same time as the Auckland International Boatshow (10-14 March) in Auckland’s Downtown Viaduct Basin, the venue for the America’s Cup in 2000 and 2003.
The WSTA member teams entered for the Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland regatta are from seven countries. Unlike last year, the host Emirates Team New Zealand, skippered by Dean Barker, will not get an automatic pass to the regatta finals, but will have to earn the right to be there by passing through the round robin and semi final stages with a winning record. The seven other teams hoping to also make it to the finals and ultimately prevail are:

Following the Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland regatta the WSTA’s member teams will race in La Maddalena, Sardinia (22 May – 6 June), then in Dubai, UAE (13 – 27 November) before Hong Kong in early 2011 (9 – 24 January).
At a press conference last week in Dubai, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Emirates Airline Group, explained that the Louis Vuitton Trophy Dubai would be held at Mina Seyahi, the home of the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC), located next to the world famous Palm Jumeirah.
“This is a real coup for Dubai. We are honoured to be part of this fantastic event which has rapidly emerged as a renowned spectacle of sport followed by millions around the world.”
Yves Carcelle, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton replied by saying: “Louis Vuitton has been present in Dubai for more than 10 years. We are thrilled that in 2010 we can further build on this relationship through a great sailing event, while reinforcing the age-old Dubai tradition for sailing regattas.”
