Louis Vuitton Trophy – Auckland – Tommaso Chieffi è uno dei velisti di riferimento in campo a Auckland. Tattico su Azzurra lo è stato in passato di Oracle, la prima barca schierata da Larry Ellison nella sua scalata alla conquista dell’America’s Cup. Chieffi ha iniziato timonando il 12 metri S.I. Italia di cui era tattico il fratello Enrico, e ha partecipato alla campagna del Moro di Venezia. Su Azzurra ha formato subito una bella coppia con Francesco Bruni, e a Nizza, nella prima prova del Trophy, sono stati in grado di battere Emirates Team New Zealand.
“Abbiamo sempre voluto avere una barca italiana dove la lingua principale fosse la nostra – dice Chieffi – e avere lo stesso equipaggio principale stabile è un vantaggio. Una prova concreta di quello che dico è il successo di Emirates Team New Zealand“. Prosegue Tommaso: “Non ci aspettavamo di vincere come a Nizza, dove il nostro gruppo si era appena formato. Ma ci siamo riusciti e le nostre sensazioni sono state molto positive. In qualche maniera dobbiamo scendere di tono qui a Auckland perchè siamo in un nuovo campo di regata e contro avversari molto forti. Nessuno è qui per giocare e tutti vogliono vincere”.

[Source Louis Vuitton Trophy] “We needed a good practice day in decent breeze and today so it was very good. We got the rust off the crew. We had the opportunity in Valencia to train in light air but today we could try a few maneouvres in bigger breeze. Looking at the multinational teams in the Auckland event, Chieffi sees an advantage in fielding an all-Italian crew: “We always planned to have an Italian boat where the main language was Italian and having the same core group all the time must be an advantage. Emirates Team New Zealand has proven this over the years.”
“We weren’t expecting to win in Nice but we did and it was our first time together as a group. We won and it was a very good feeling. Somehow we need to tone it down here because it is a new venue, a new regatta and the competition is very fierce. Nobody is here to play. Everybody wants to win”.
Azzurra entered America’s Cup competition in Newport, RI, in 1983 and made it’s last appearance in Fremantle in 1987. With the rebirth of the Azzurra name from the Yacht Club Costa Smerelda, Chieffi says the crew is aware of its heritage.
“Azzura was a name that brought sailing into the homes of Italians. It’s a big responsibility. We felt it in Nice but we carried the day proudly. We don’t expect to win here in Auckland necessarily but we’ll be giving it a very good shot and building our experience for future events”.
