[singlepic id=3882 w=320 h=213 float=left]World Match Racing Tour – Bornholm – Il Team Azzurra dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda è appena arrivato in Danimarca, dove parteciperà al Danish Open 2010, settima tappa dell’ISAF World Match Racing Tour in programma dall’8 al 12 settembre. Dopo la non brillante performance della settimana scorsa al St. Moritz Match Race, in cui il Team Azzurra non è riuscito a entrare nei quarti di finale, Francesco Bruni e il suo fidato equipaggio – Matteo Auguadro, Tom Burnham e Pierluigi De Felice – sono pronti a rifarsi nelle acque danesi dove sfideranno, una volta ancora, i titani del match racing.
“La settimana scorsa a St. Moritz eravamo un po’ fuori forma a causa della nostra lunga assenza dalle regate di match racing. Abbiamo sentito un po’ di ruggine soprattutto nelle partenze, ma abbiamo rivisto con attenzione i nostri errori e speriamo di aver spazzato via ogni indecisione. Il livello dei partecipanti in questo Tour è incredibile, non c’è di meglio al mondo e non è certo un’impresa facile spadroneggiare in questa flotta. Comunque speriamo di rifarci in questa nuova sede del World Match Racing Tour, sarà un evento sicuramente molto combattuto: i velisti danesi, infatti, sono molto forti nel match racing e vorranno conquistare gli onori di casa”.
Nel 2010 il Danish Open ha cambiato sede da Aarhus all’isola di Bornholm, nel Mar Baltico. I concorrenti regateranno a bordo di DS 37 One-Design Match-Racer, considerata come la barca perfetta per il match racing, disegnata specificamente per questa disciplina da un team di progettazione danese nel 1991.
Il Danish Open è uno degli ultimi due eventi rimasti prima della tappa finale dell’ISAF World Match Racing Tour (Monsoon Cup), quindi questa settimana la competizione sarà sicuramente molto intensa. Parteciperanno al Danish Open tutti i migliori team nella classifica dell’ISAF World Match Racing Tour 2010, tra cui l’attuale leader del Tour Mathieu Richard, il campione mondiale in carica di match racing Adam Minoprio e il triplice campione olimpico Ben Ainslie. Completano la lista dei ‘Tour Card Holders’ Peter Gilmour, quattro volte campione mondiale di match racing, Bertrand Pacé, Torvar Mirsky, Francesco Bruni e Bjorn Hansen.
Il gruppo delle cosiddette ‘Wildcard Entries’ (ossia gli skipper che non partecipano a tutte le tappe del Tour) include: il velista locale Mads Ebler, il ventenne William Tiller, Susanne Ward e Michael Buckley.

WORLD MATCH RACING TOUR, OLD SCORES TO SETTLE AT THE DANISH OPEN
[World Match Racing Tour Press Release] The ISAF World Match Racing Tour heads to Denmark this week, with a new venue, Bornholm, an island on the Baltic Sea. Denmark has been a happy hunting ground for Danish match racing in the past eight years with no less than six victories recorded by Denmark’s leading sailors. This year, the likes of Mathieu Richard and Adam Minoprio will head a pack of teams keen to redress the balance.
With the Danish Open being one of just two remaining events for teams to qualify for the Championship deciding Monsoon Cup, the 2010 Danish Open has all the hallmarks to be one of the most competitive and fiercely fought match racing contests of the year so far. Last year, the action was peppered with penalties and upsets, with the fierce race between Peter Gilmour and Jes Gram Hansen in the semi-final epitomising the heated nature of match racing.
Gilmour, reflected: “The rivalries, the contentious decisions and moves in the heat of the moment, the bragging rights, up close action… they’re what make match racing unique and the Danish Open so memorable! I’ve got scores to settle this year and I’ll be looking to crank up our output in Bornholm to push Gilmour up the Tour rankings.”
In 2010, the Danish Open will shift location from the city of Aarhus to the ‘Bright Green Island’ of Bornholm where a melting pot of talent will compete for the honours from the 8 to 12 September. Six of the top seven teams in the 2010 ISAF World Match Racing Tour Championship are on the entry list, including current Tour leader, Mathieu Richard, defending World Match Racing Champion Adam Minoprio and Ben Ainslie – the triple Olympic gold medallist and skipper of Britain’s America’s Cup Challenger team. Four-time World Match Racing Champion Peter Gilmour, former World Champion Bertrand Pacé, Torvar Mirsky, Francesco Bruni, Björn Hansen complete the group of Tour Card Holders set to compete.
An exciting crop of Wildcard entries is headed up by local match racer, Mads Ebler, the young 20-year old William Tiller, Susanne Ward and Michael Buckley.
The ISAF World Match Racing Tour is renowned for being the career pathway of the world’s best match racers, many of whom have and will go on to compete in the America’s Cup. The Danish Open comes off the back of the St. Moritz Match Race and is the 7th Stage in the epic 9 event Tour which includes races in France, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, Sweden, Korea and Bermuda, culminating in November/December 2010 with the high-profile Monsoon Cup in Malaysia.
