Torbay – Leggero, ma più stabile, il vento di oggi ha regalato una giornata un po’ più semplice delle precedenti dello Zhik SB3 World Championship a Torquay. Dopo i due giorni di qualificazioni, le oltre cento imbarcazioni sono state divise in due batterie, la Silver e la Gold Fleet. Per la Gold, la competizione si è fatta ancor più dura. Guardando i risultati dopo le tre prove di oggi, si capisce che per molti è stato un vero e proprio massacro.
Il leader della classifica, Peter Saxton, non ha avuto la miglior giornata. Dopo una serie di 18, 20 e 43, chiude oggi con un tredicesimo generale. Piuttosto deludente se si pensa a come ha iniziato. Anche il campione del mondo 2009, Craig Burlton, ha avuto una giornata altalenante, un 21, 2 e 29, e ha lasciato ben tre posti nell’overall… non sarà affatto contento.
Grazie a un primo, terzo, primo, Red è tornato al comando e lo ha fatto in grande stile. Il Laser Sb3 di Robert Greenhalgh, infatti, anticipa Race Team Gill di Geoff Carveth di nove punti e gli australiani di Club Marine, terzi assoluti, di ben 27 punti. Considerato che lo scarto è già stato calcolato, difficile sarà per gli inseguitori tentare di riaprire la partita.
Giornata senza infamia e senza lode anche per i nostri più promettenti equipaggi italiani. Stenghele, dopo due giornate davvero positive, oggi rallenta un po’ con un 10, 9 e 32 e scende d diverse posizioni, fermandosi al decimo posto: “E’ stato un giorno difficile – racconta il tattico Chicco Fonda – Le prime due prove discrete (10-9) ma la terza molto male (32) in seguito ad una partenza non brillante. Siamo arrivati a terra comunque settimi in classifica, purtroppo abbiamo rimediato una penalizzazione (13 punti con l’arbitration system) nella prima prova, a causa di un’ingenuità alla boa di bolina, che ci ha relegato al decimo posto. Il livello è veramente stellare, per darvi un’idea, il Campione Australiano di 49er Nathan Outridge, con alla tattica nientemeno che il campione di laser Tom Slingsby, oggi e’ sempre stato lontano primi 15. Direi che siamo abbastanza arrabbiati e domani venderemo cara la pelle”.
Non brillante, ma costante, anche le giornata di Bravi Thytronic, salito in quindicesima posizione: “Abbiamo guadagnato un posto rispetto a ieri – racconta Jacopo Pasini, tattico a bordo – attualmente siamo 15esimi nella Gold, oggi non abbiamo avuto spunti bellissimi ma non abbiamo fatto neanche gravi errori che in questo momento della regata è cosa molto positiva. I parziali di oggi sono 16, 18 e 19, sicuramente possiamo fare qualcosa in più e domani faremo il possibile ma sempre con un occhio a non rischiare troppo in quanto ci sarà solo un altro scarto. Parecchia gente, anche quelli forti hanno sbagliato almeno una prova quindi vedremo domani di giocarci le nostre carte”.
Questa sera i concorrenti hanno preso parte alla festa per lo Zhik SB3 World Championship al Palace Hotel di Torquay. Sono stati consegnati i premi alla Barca del Giorno per i primi tre giorni di regata e un fortunato estratto a sorte si aggiudicherà un fiocco regalato da LaserPerformance.

LASER SB3 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, GREENHALGH’S COME BACK
[Laser SB3 World Championship Press Release] Lighter, but more stable conditions made for a smoother day on the water on Day 3 of the Zhik SB3 World Championships in Torquay, UK. Following two days of qualifying races, today the fleets split onto their Gold and Silver courses. For the Gold Fleet today, the competition got a lot harder. Reviewing the results after a further 3 races, it was a day of snakes and ladders for many.
Overnight leader Peter Saxton didn’t enjoy the best of days. After racking up a 18, 20 and 43 Saxton drops to thirteenth overall. This is a disappointing set of results after such a strong start to his Championship. 2009 Laser SB3 World Champion, Craig Burlton, had a down, up, down day adding a 21, 2 and 29 to his score card. Burlton drops three places to eight overall; he won’t be happy with that.
Jez Entwistle entering the Gold Fleet in thirteenth position this morning. Leading at the first windward mark in the first race, Perky III finished 4th in the first race of the day. Building on their first race performance, Entwistle lead again at the first windward mark of race two. This time he managed to protect his lead and extend on the downwind leg and went on to win the race. “We’ve not sailed together as a crew before, but everything is coming together nicely, Ali [Hall] is a great tactician and doing a great job of picking our lanes out of the starts. We are all really enjoying ourselves.”
Another boat that has shot up the leader board today is Team Russia, Oleg Zherebtsov’s Laser SB3 helmed by Rodion Luka. “We’ve had a very good day today and we are very happy on the boat. We have a good attitude after one black flag and one disqualification, we have everything to gain. I have a good feeling for the shifts now and in this boat, there is time to think about what you will do, so it is very tactical racing!” explained Rodion Luka after racing this evening. At the end of Day 3, Team Russia have climbed fourteen places and are now eleventh overall. I’d call that a good day at the office.
After leading Fleet A on day one of the Zhik SB3 World Championships, Robert Greenhalgh slid to sixth place yesterday. Today, the crew onboard Red were back in race winning form. Adding a 1, 3, 1 to their results, Robert now leads the fleet by nine points. “It’s been a really hard week so far, but it came together again today.” For the next two days of sailing Robert’s aim is, “To make the bad bits better and the good bits better too.” As we recognised at the beginning of this championship, consistency is king in the Laser SB3 fleet and it looks like Greenhalgh has this under control.
This evening competitors will attend the Zhik SB3 World Championships Party at the Palace Hotel, Torquay. Prizes will be awarded for “Boat of the Day” for the first three days of racing and a lucky dip draw will see one team win a jib provided by LaserPerformance.
