Extreme Sailing Series – Cascais – L’Italia protagonista dell’evento con due team iscritti Luna Rossa e Team Nice, e una tappa che si svolgerà a Trapani a settembre 2011.
L’evento in Numeri:
– nove eventi confermati per il circuito 2011, che spaziano dal Nord America, all’Europa, fino al Medio Oriente e all’Asia;
– un mix di località, dalle città simbolo agli “stadi del mare” non convenzionali, per consolidarle come destinazioni veliche e per incrementare i mercati emergenti della nautica;
– 10 team di altissimo livello in rappresentanza di otto paesi con velisti di oltre dodici diverse nazionalità;
– eventi di 5 giorni che offrono un mix unico tra regate in mare aperto e lungo costa stile “stadio”, mantenendo integro il valore dello sport e intrattenendo sia il pubblico di non velisti, sia quello degli appassionati;
– continueranno ad essere organizzati, oltre alle regate di flotta, sfide su percorsi a otto, test di velocità, match race e ancora altri format di regata. Le prove saranno sempre brevi, impegnative e appassionanti;
– esperienze esclusive per VIP a terra e in acqua: l’innovativo spot per il quinto uomo rimane un aspetto chiave dell’evento;
– un programma d’intrattenimento di otto ore (sia sull’acqua che a terra), pensato per il coinvolgimento del pubblico;
– dodici Optimist, otto 49er e almeno altre tre classi si sfideranno in eventi collaterali durante la stagione. Parteciperanno anche windsurf e kitesurf;
– prospettive a cinque anni e pianificazione strategica per il 2011.

Nel dettaglio: cambia il modo in cui la vela viene percepita
Alla vigilia del World Yacht Racing Forum di Estoril (Portogallo), le Extreme Sailing Series™ presentano un programma di grande interesse per il 2011, svelando le diverse località che ospiteranno le tappe, i team e gli skipper. Il circuito che si fregia del titolo di ‘ISAF Special Event’, diventa veramente globale nell’anno in cui celebra il suo quinto anno di vita, con un programma che prevede lo svolgimento, in oltre undici mesi, di nove eventi in tre continenti con dieci team in rappresentanza di otto nazioni. Gli obiettivi principali del circuito sono due: continuare a rappresentare per gli sponsor la miglior opportunità strategica sotto il profilo commerciale e permettere alle località che ospitano le varie tappe del circuito di beneficiare della grande occasione che la vela professionistica può offrire. Da sempre questa filosofia rappresenta il fondamento del circuito, nato nel 2006. Dal 2007, infatti, la maggior parte dei team ha cominciato a fondare le sue attività sul supporto degli sponsor. Il programma 2011 mette a disposizione una piattaforma di sponsorizzazione globale, con budget estremamente accessibili, e con tanti velisti entusiasti all’idea di partecipare.
“Il circuito ha fatto molta strada dal 2007, quando era composto solo da quattro eventi europei e cinque team – ha commentato Mark Turner, Direttore Generale della società organizzatrice, la OC ThirdPole – Continuiamo ad attrarre velisti, team con sponsorizzazioni di altissimo livello e, ancora più importante, nuove località dove lo sport può essere praticato nel nostro formato “stile stadio del mare”, formato peraltro sempre in continua evoluzione. La selezione delle località per il 2011 è stata l’obiettivo principale del nostro team commerciale fin dalla fine del 2009. Ci stiamo avvicinando al mix perfetto tra città simbolo, località prestigiose, destinazioni eccellenti per la vela e mercati nautici emergenti.
“Continuiamo a combinare l’integrità dello sport al divertimento – ha proseguito Turner, aggiungendo – Abbiamo dimostrato che la vela lungo le rive, può senza dubbio essere divertente da guardare sia per un non velista sia per un esperto di vela. Parte integrante del DNA del circuito fin dall’inizio è la presenza dello spot per il quinto uomo. Questo spazio rimane uno dei punti fermi più importanti del circuito, è un momento pensato per i clienti degli sponsor, per i media, per i cameraman delle televisioni e per i vincitori di premi che mettiamo in palio per il pubblico”.
Dopo la sfida, vinta con successo nel 2010, il circuito globale 2011, che prenderà il via in Muscat a Febbraio e si concluderà a Singapore a Dicembre 2011, sta entrando in una nuova fase di sviluppo grazie ad un programma a cinque anni. Turner spiega: “Alla fine del 2009 la iShares è stata acquisita dalla BlackRock e questo ha comportato la fine della partnership con l’evento. Eravamo convinti di organizzare un evento test in Asia, poi la stagione 2010 in Europa è stata nuovamente un successo anche senza un main partner. Si è trattato di un grande investimento per il business di OC ThirdPole, ma ci credevamo”.
“Siamo andati su questa strada avanti e ora possiamo vantare partnership con località di primaria importanza, con team forti e contare su una pianificazione finanziaria a lungo termine. I fondi sono sufficienti per continuare, nei prossimi cinque anni, a sviluppare le Extreme Sailing Series™ in tutte le aree: in acqua, a terra, nell’intrattenimento del pubblico, e in generale per i media” ha concluso Turner.
Oltre alle partnership con le località che ospiteranno le tappe e con sponsor locali in ciascun evento, Omega torna come fornitore ufficiale di orologi. Marinepool sarà il fornitore tecnico di abbigliamento e Pol Rogers quello di champagne. Ulteriori partner sia per il circuito, sia per i singoli eventi saranno annunciati con il nuovo anno.
Un circuito che fa tappa in Nord America, Europa, Medio Oriente e Asia
Le Extreme Sailing Series™ del 2011 prenderanno il via a Febbraio nel Sultanato dell’Oman, in concomitanza con l’annuale Muscat Festival. L’Act 2 si svolgerà in Cina (la località sarà annunciata in seguito). Istanbul, porta di passaggio tra Europa e Asia e Città Europea dello Sport nel 2012, ospiterà l’Act 3, poi la flotta di Extreme 40 si sposterà per la prima volta negli Stati Uniti d’America, lungo le rive di Boston in tempo per le celebrazioni del 4 Luglio.

L’Act 5 si svolgerà durante la Cowes Week che ospiterà gli Extreme40 per la quinta volta consecutiva, poi i catamarani torneranno nel porto siciliano di Trapani per il secondo anno consecutivo. La tappa francese si svolgerà sul Mediterraneo, nelle acque di Nizza, e sarà seguita da quella di Almeria, in Andalucia, Spagna, che ospiterà il penultimo evento. Il vincitore del circuito 2010 sarà invece deciso a Singapore a metà Dicembre.
Dieci team in rappresentanza di otto nazioni, con velisti provenienti da più di 12 paesi e con un bagaglio di diverse esperienze (Volvo Ocean Race, America’s Cup, medaglie d’oro olimpiche, World Match Racing Tour ecc.)
Innovazione e qualità sono ancora una volta gli elementi distintivi delle Extreme Sailing Series. Per il secondo anno torna, candidandosi per la vittoria, Groupe Edmond de Rothschild (lo skipper non è ancora stato comunicato); Due gli equipaggi italiani che partecipano per la prima volta al circuito: Luna Rossa, skipper Max Sirena vincitore dell’America’s Cup, che si è assicurata come timoniere Paul Campbell-James, vincitore del circuito dello scorso anno. A bordo anche Manuel Modena e un altro inglese Allister Richardson. Su Team Nice un equipaggio completamente italiano con il veterano dell’America’s Cup Alberto Barovier al timone e Alberto Sonino, Dede De Luca e Simone De Mari in equipaggio. Torna Oman Air Masirah con il francese Sidney Gavignet, veterano della Volvo Ocean Race, come skipper. Roman Hagara, due volte medaglia d’oro alle Olimpiadi, partecipa per la seconda volta con il suo team Red Bull Extreme Sailing.
L’inglese Ian Williams, due volte vincitore del World Match Racing Tour, farà parte del Team GAC Pindar; The Wave Muscat, vincitore del circuito 2010 ritorna a difendere il titolo, questa volta con la stella emergente, Torvar Mirsky in veste di skipper.
Dopo la vittoria del 2008 torna anche Alinghi con Tanguy Cariou, tattico con grande esperienza sugli Extreme 40, nel ruolo di skipper; Artemis Racing di Paul Cayard avrà come skipper l’americano Terry Hutchinson e infine un nuovo ingresso nel circuito 2011 sarà quello di Emirates Team New Zealand. Dean Barker, il neozelandese vincitore dell’America’s Cup sarà lo skipper, dopo aver provato per la prima volta a regatare sugli Extreme 40 durante l’ultimo evento di Almeria quest’anno.
Il format dell’evento e le nuove regole di Classe
Nel 2011, ogni Act sarà composto da cinque giorni di regate (nel 2010 erano quattro, mentre nel 2009 tre). Ogni tappa sarà organizzata secondo quelle che sono le caratteristiche peculiari delle Extreme Sailing Series™, ovvero un mix di regate in acque libere insieme a quelle più brevi e a stretto contatto con il pubblico stile “stadio”. Nello stesso tempo saranno utilizzati diversi tipi di percorsi e modalità di regata, dal match race alle regate di flotta, fino a prove di velocità pura in rettilineo. Ancora una volta saranno investite risorse ed energie per garantire l’arbitraggio in acqua, elemento essenziale per consentire al pubblico di vivere in diretta l’evento e di conoscerne il risultato in tempo reale, piuttosto che dover aspettare i risultati di eventuali proteste al termine della giornata in acqua.
Turner ha confermato: “Siamo impegnati e decisi a mantenere assolutamente integri i valori sportivi dell’evento, così come peraltro assicuriamo ormai dal 2007. Recentemente abbiamo rilevato il controllo della Classe Extreme 40 dai suoi fondatori, TornadoSport. Questo ci ha consentito di sviluppare le regole per l’evento e per le barche in maniera organica, al fine di garantire sempre di più le stesse possibilità di vittoria a tutti i partecipanti. Nello stesso tempo possiamo esercitare un controllo dei costi più efficace a beneficio di tutti i team. Abbiamo limitato il numero delle vele (e ne abbiamo ridotto i costi). Abbiamo diminuito le spese di supporto tecnico grazie all’istituzione di una squadra e di una struttura tecnica centralizzata, alla movimentazione e alla gestione delle spedizioni anche in questo caso centralizzate. Infine, sono stati ottimizzati una serie di dettagli che avranno un effetto positivo sul ritorno degli investimenti per gli sponsor dei team, assicurando parità dal punto di vista sportivo indipendentemente dai budget in campo”.
Le nuove regole di Classe saranno pubblicate questa settimana
Un budget completo per un anno di attività su nove eventi, che garantisca la competitività del team, oscillerà tra i 450.000 e i 600.000 Euro, oltre a un costo barca di 100.000 Euro (inteso come charterizzazione annuale o come ammortamento sui quattro anni).
Per rendere l’evento ancora più accattivante e coinvolgente, gli organizzatori hanno lavorato per garantire otto ore di intrattenimento in acqua nei giorni dedicati al pubblico.
Prima e in attesa dell’inizio delle regate degli Extreme 40, che rappresenteranno sempre il clou di ogni tappa, si esibiranno imbarcazioni della classe Olimpica 49er, windsurf e kitesurf. Un’ importante campagna di sensibilizzazione sulle comunità locali insieme ad attività di beneficenza, daranno la possibilità a molti bambini di scendere in acqua ogni mattina. A contorno e supporto dell’attività sportiva sarà organizzato un programma di intrattenimento a terra all’interno del villaggio regate, programma che spazierà dalle attività interattive alla musica e sarà corredato da stand enogastronomici. In alcune località saranno inoltre previsti una serie di eventi musicali denominati Extreme Sailing Series ‘Sailing Remixed™.
Un evento globale come questo lascia un’impronta significativa. L’analisi a posteriori dell’evento 2010 è quasi completa e sarà utilizzata come punto chiave per incrementare le potenzialità dell’evento, per ridurre gli sprechi, e poter lasciare sull’acqua un segno anche nel futuro. Iniziative del 2010 quali la riduzione dell’utilizzo della plastica per la confezione delle bottiglie d’acqua sono in corso di analisi e subiranno un’evoluzione nel 2011. Queste sfide non finiscono mai una volta che sono cominciate.
Per il pubblico e i tifosi che non potranno essere presenti è previsto il commento dal vivo con l’audio trasmesso dalle barche, mentre è in fase di studio la possibilità di trasmettere, almeno in alcune località, le regate in diretta televisiva.
Nella seconda parte dell’anno, a complemento di una ampia gamma di canali di comunicazione utilizzati per l’evento, sarà lanciata una nuova applicazione per iPhone. Continuerà la produzione e l’upload di video sia su YouTube sia sui siti o sui canali dei team, specialmente di quelle clip brevi e spettacolari per le quali le Extreme Sailing Series sono famose. La piattaforma di programmazione globale televisiva continuerà ad essere implementata anche in formato HD.

In Detail: Changing the way sailing is seen
On the eve of the World Yacht Racing Forum in Estoril (Portugal), the Extreme Sailing Series™ unveiled a great package of interesting and varied host venues, and top level professional sailing teams and skippers for 2011. The award-winning and ‘ISAF Special Event’ circuit is going truly global as it enters its fifth year, with 9 events spanning 3 continents, over 11 months and 10 teams representing 8 nations. A core objective of the event remains to be the most commercially sound way for brands and host venues to benefit from the great offer that professional sailing can present. This philosophy has been at the heart of the product since its inception in 2006, with the vast majority of teams since 2007 being sponsorship funded. The 2011 package provides a global sponsorship platform, at a very accessible budget level, and with a queue of sailors keen to compete.
“The circuit has come a long way since 2007 when we had just 4 European events and 5 teams,” commented Mark Turner, Executive Chairman of organisers OC ThirdPole. “We continue to attract new top sponsored teams, sailors and, importantly, major new venues where we can showcase the sport with our game-changing ‘stadium’ format. The choice of venues for 2011 has been our core commercial team focus since the end of 2009. We are getting closer to the perfect mix of established iconic cities, premium venues, great sailing destinations and emerging (sailing) markets.
“We continue to maintain the mix of sporting integrity and entertainment. We have shown inshore sailing can actually be fun to watch for the non-sailor as well as the sailor! Part of the DNA of the circuit since the beginning, our 5th man spot remains one of the sport’s greatest assets – be it for sponsors clients, media, TV cameramen, or prizewinners drawn from the general public,” he concluded.
The 2011 global circuit, which kicks off in Muscat in February 2011 and concludes in Singapore in December, is entering a new phase of development as part of a five year vision, after a challenging but successful 2010. Turner explains, “iShares was acquired by BlackRock at the end of 2009, which meant an end to the founding partnership of the event. We committed to running a test event in Asia and what was another successful European season in 2010 without a main partner. That was a big investment for our OC ThirdPole business, but one we believed in,” said Turner.
“Going forward we now have some meaningful host venue partnerships, strong teams, and a long term business plan with funding in place which will allow us to continue to develop the Extreme Sailing Series™ across all areas over the next five years – on the water, the shore-side public entertainment package and the media platforms,” he promised.
In addition to the host venue partnerships, and local sponsors for each event, Omega returns as Official Timekeeper, Marinepool join as Official Technical Clothing Supplier, and Pol Roger as the Official Champagne Supplier for the series. Further partners at both series and local level to be announced in the New Year.
A circuit spanning North America, Europe, Arabia and Asia
The 2011 Extreme Sailing Series™ kicks off in the Sultanate of Oman in February, as part of the annual Muscat Festival, before heading to China for Act 2 (location to be announced separately). The gateway between Europe and Asia, and European City of Sport for 2012, Istanbul, will host the third Act before the Extreme 40 fleet travels to the United States of America for the first time, to Boston’s waterfront in time for the July 4th celebrations.
Cowes Week welcomes the Extreme 40s for the fifth consecutive year for Act 5, ahead of a return to the Sicilian port of Trapani, for the second consecutive year. The French round will be staged on Mediterranean waters in Nice before Almería, in Andalucia, Spain hosts the penultimate event and the 2011 circuit will be decided in Singapore in mid-December.

Diversity and quality are once again hallmarks of the Extreme Sailing Series line upTwo-times runner-up Groupe Edmond de Rothschild returns (skipper as yet unknown); new entry Luna Rossa has snapped up last year’s winning skipper Paul Campbell-James as helm, with the boat skippered by America’s Cup winning sailor, Max Sirena. Oman Air Masirah, returns, skippered by French Volvo Ocean Race veteran Sidney Gavignet; double Olympic Gold Medallist Roman Hagara enters for the second season with his Red Bull Extreme Sailing team.
Britain’s Ian Williams, two times winner of the World Match Racing Tour joins Team GAC Pindar; another new Italian entry, Team Nice, led by Alberto Barovier and 2010 winners, The Wave, Muscat return to defend their title, this time skippered by emerging star Torvar Mirsky.
Alinghi returns to the fleet after winning in 2008, skippered by experienced Extreme 40 tactician Tanguy Cariou; Paul Cayard’s Artemis Racing is skippered by American Terry Hutchinson and finally, new to the 2011 circuit will be Emirates Team New Zealand, skippered by Kiwi America’s Cup winner, Dean Barker, who experienced Extreme 40 racing for the first time at the final event in Almería this year.
Event Format and new Class Rules
In 2011, each Act will generally consist of five days of racing as opposed to four days in 2010, and three in 2009. Each Act will be true to the core aspirations of the Extreme Sailing Series™ ethos – mixing ‘open-water’ racing with ‘stadium’ short-course racing in front of the public, including all the various disciplines and courses used already from fleet racing to match racing, straight line duels and speed trials. A large investment will be made again in the on-water umpiring – essential for ensuring the fans know the results as they watch, rather than wait for post-event protests.
Turner confirmed, “We are committed to maintaining the highest sporting integrity, as we have done since 2007. Recently taking control of the Extreme 40 Class from the creators, TornadoSport, has allowed us to also develop the rules of both event and boats in unison, to ensure a more equal chance to win, and also drive down many of the costs for the teams. We’ve limited sails (and dropped the price), decreased support costs with a central Tech Zone and team, and are managing all shipping logistics centrally as well as a host of other detail changes that all affect both return on investment for team sponsors, and ensure sporting equality regardless of budget size.”
The new Class rules are published this week. A typical full budget for a competitive year long campaign will range between 450k and 650k Euros, plus a boat at c.100k Euros per year (charter or depreciated purchased cost over 4 years).
Developing further the public events side, the organiser has committed to providing an eight-hour mix of entertainment on ‘public’ days. On the water a number of support acts, like the Olympic 49er class, windsurfing and kiteboarding, will build up to the main Extreme 40 headline act. A strong local community and charity campaign in each venue will see children given the chance to get on the water each morning. Wrapped around the on-water competition will be a comprehensive on-shore entertainment programme within the race village from interactive entertainment to music, alongside bars and food outlets. Music acts will also take centre stage under the Extreme Sailing Series ‘Sailing Remixed™’ banner at a number of the venues.
A global event such as this has a significant ‘footprint’. The environmental audit of the 2010 event is nearing completion, and will be used as the benchmark to improve all aspects of the event’s energy, waste and water footprint going forward. Initiatives from 2010, such as minimizing bottled water, are being analysed and evolved for 2011. This particular challenge has no finish line, but the race has begun.
And for the fans off-site, live commentary and audio from the boats will be streamed online, with possibility of live TV in some venues still under consideration. A new iPhone ‘app’ will also be launched during Q2, complementing a wide range of communication channels used by the event. Video online will continue to feature strongly, via YouTube and syndicated channels – especially for the short action clips the event is best known for. The current global TV programming platform will continue to be developed, but now also in HD format.
In 2010 Extreme Sailing Series has attracted coverage in over 120 countries in 13 languages including on CNN (Intl), UK Terrestrial station Channel 4, Bloomberg (Intl), Sky Sports (UK, NZ), Fox Sport (Australia), Sport+ (France) and ESPN (Brazil), with over 60hours of airtime for each programme in the five part series.
