[singlepic id=182 w=320 h=213 float=left]Extreme Sailing Series – Londra – L’Extreme Sailing Series è destinata ancora a crescere, dal momento che OC Events, la società che ha ideato questo circuito prestigioso e vincente, giunto ora alla sua quarta edizione, ha confermato che l’evento si svolgerà anche nel 2011 su scala mondiale. La crescita è parte della nuova visione a cinque anni per questo circuito di vela professionistica, che ha cambiato il modo in cui la vela viene percepita diventando uno dei più importanti patrimoni di questo sport.
OC, inoltre, ha concluso proprio questa settimana l’acquisizione della Classe Extreme 40, compresi il progetto e i diritti di costruzione, dalla TornadoSports. TornadoSports, presieduta da Herbert Dercksen, aveva lanciato nel 2005 questo nuovo format di regate, in collaborazione con Mitch Booth e Daniel Koene, varando il primo catamarano Extreme 40, progettato da Yves Loday e oggi costruito da Marstrom in Svezia. In seguito all’acquisizione, OC gestirà la Classe, il supporto tecnico ai team e la vendita delle barche. Come già annunciato, l’ Extreme Sailing Series si è impegnata a fare dell’Extreme 40 il protagonista assoluto delle regate internazionali almeno fino al gennaio 2013. Nello stesso tempo l’Extreme Sailing Series coinvolgerà i team che già partecipano all’evento in merito alle scelte sulle possibili modifiche che avranno luogo nel corso della stagione 2011, sia per quanto riguarda le barche sia per le regole di regata.
Quello delle Extreme Sailing Series, è uno dei soli quattro circuiti al mondo a cui è stato assegnato lo status di Evento Speciale dall’ISAF (la Federazione Internazionale di Vela). Il circuito delle Extreme Sailing Series, è rinomato per la sua peculiarità a dar vita a regate di altissimo livello e per essere l’unico in grado di attrarre i migliori velisti del mondo provenienti da diverse discipline (America’s Cup, Olimpiadi, e regate oceaniche).
Le regate si svolgono su diversi percorsi e il pubblico viene coinvolto nell’azione grazie ad un formato molto spettacolare. Negli ultimi 12 mesi, gli eventi hanno visto lo svolgimento di regate di flotta convenzionali (con percorsi bolina-poppa), regate costiere, regate brevi di soli 15 minuti con sfide serrate stile “arena”, gare di velocità uno contro uno, e da quest’anno, come d’obbligo, le regate di match race.
L’impostazione di base del circuito è sempre stata quella di contribuire a realizzare il massimo ritorno d’investimenti possibile per gli sponsor dei team. Questa filosofia continua ad essere applicata sia con il controllo dei costi (i budget rimangono nell’ordine di investimenti di decine di migliaia di Euro per ogni mercato), sia allargando il circuito a località sempre diverse per aumentare la visibilità globale dell’evento.
Nel 2011 il circuito delle Extreme Sailing Series, sarà composto da una serie di otto eventi internazionali che interesseranno Europa, Stati Uniti, Medio ed Estremo Oriente. Negli ultimi sei mesi, OC Events ha ricevuto più di sessanta richieste da parte di città interessate ad ospitare una tappa del circuito. Per il circuito del 2011 sono state selezionate al momento diciotto possibili località. Anche per il 2012 la scelta delle potenziali città ospitanti è già a buon punto.
Trapani (Italia) e Andalucia (Spagna), che già nel 2010 hanno ospitato due tappe, sono state confermate con un accordo pluriennale. OC Events annuncerà le altre località tra ottobre e novembre.
Un “tipico” evento del 2011 consisterà in cinque giorni di regata, a differenza dei tre dello scorso anno. Durante i primi due giorni saranno disputate regate in acque aperte a largo dove le località lo permetteranno, prima che l’azione si sposti all’interno dello “stadio” ovvero il porto negli ultimi tre giorni del programma “Stiamo cercando di migliorare e di allargare il circuito delle Extreme Sailing Series da ogni punto di vista” ha dichiarato Mark Turner, Presidente di Oc ThirdPole, società di eventi outdoor di recentissima formazione, la cui controllata OC Events è, a sua volta, organizzatrice del circuito.
“Il circuito delle Extreme Sailing Series crescerà ancora sia grazie a competizioni con format innovativi, a località con caratteristiche diverse tra loro ma comunque sempre simbolo di eccellenza – location al centro delle città o che affacciano sull’oceano, così come su fiumi e laghi – sia grazie a un’organizzazione delle regate di altissimo e giudici in acqua. Lo sviluppo di esclusive esperienze di B2B per VIP, che hanno rappresentato una peculiarità del circuito fin dal principio, saranno ulteriormente implementate. Particolare cura sarà dedicata all’intrattenimento per gli spettatori sia in acqua sia a terra, che includerà i nostri concerti Sailing Rocks.
Allo scopo di incrementare ulteriormente la diffusione del circuito sulle reti televisive mondiali – ha continuato Turner – abbiamo pianificato un aumento della produzione e della distribuzione dei nostri contenuti editoriali per le serie TV che hanno avuto maggiore successo a livello internazionale, così come per i contenuti online. Abbiamo pensato di portare in regata altre classi, come i moth e i windsurf, durante le fasi di warm-up, sia per pura esibizione che per regatare.
In considerazione dell’alto numero di richieste pervenute e del fatto che il limite di partecipanti per il 2011 è fissato a dodici barche, oggi è stato pubblicato un preliminare del Bando di Regata insieme a una procedura di pre-iscrizione. Qualora venisse raggiunto il limite di dodici iscritti, i team che già partecipano al circuito e che hanno collaborato alla sua crescita, avranno un diritto di priorità nell’iscrizione.
Il Bando di Regata ufficiale sarà pubblicato il 31 ottobre al termine dell’ultimo evento 2010 in programma, quello di Almeria in Spagna. Sempre in quel momento saranno aperte le iscrizioni.

EXTREME SAILING SERIES, CONFIRMED 2011 SEASON
[Extreme Sailing Series Press Release] The Extreme Sailing Series is set to expand as OC Events, creator of the award-winning circuit now in its 4th season, confirm a worldwide 2011 series. The expansion is part of a new five-year vision for the professional sailing circuit that has changed the way sailing is seen, becoming one of the hottest properties in the sport.
OC has also concluded this week the acquisition of the Extreme 40 Class, including the design and build rights from TornadoSport. TornadoSport, headed up by CEO Herbert Dercksen, created the game-changing concept in 2005 along with Mitch Booth and Daniel Koene when they launched the Extreme 40 catamaran that was designed by Yves Loday and built today by Marstrom Composites in Sweden. The acquisition will include management of the Class, technical support for the teams, and boat sales. As previously announced, the Extreme Sailing Serie is committed to the Extreme 40 as the main act until at least January 2013, and will seek the input of current teams with regards to possible evolutions of the boat and rules for the 2011 season.
The Extreme Sailing Series™, one of just four circuits with ISAF’s (International Sailing Federation) Special Event Status, is renowned for delivering top class professional racing that uniquely attracts the world’s best sailors from a range of disciplines (America’s Cup, Olympics and ocean racing skippers), racing in many different formats, with a public focused act staged in a ‘stadium’ format. Over the past 12 months, the events have included conventional long course ‘windward/leeward’ fleet racing, coastal courses, the short course 15-minute close-combat ‘stadium’ races, one against one speed duels, and now since February this year, as a regular feature, match racing.
The circuit has been focused on commercially run teams since its inception, and will continue to develop the return on investment for the team sponsors – by both controlling costs (budgets remain in the tens of thousands per market), and visiting more markets to extend the global reach of the event.
The 2011 Extreme Sailing Series will see an eight event global circuit across Europe, the USA, the Far East and the GCC region. After being approached by more than 60 host venues from around the world in the past six months, there is a current shortlist of 18 for the 2011 circuit, with 2012 discussions also well progressed. The 2010 host venues of Trapani (Italy) and Andalucia (Spain) are already confirmed as part of their multi-year contracts, and OC Events will announce the other venues during October and November.
A ‘typical’ 2011 event will consist of five days of racing, as opposed to three last year. The first two days being ’open water’ courses, where the venue permits, before the action heats up in the close-quarters ‘stadium’ racing over the final three days. “We are looking to expand and improve the Extreme Sailing Series™ on all fronts,” said Mark Turner, Chairman of the newly merged OC ThirdPole outdoor events group that owns the circuit organiser, OC Events. “With multi-format competition at top class venues of different types – city centres, ocean facing, rivers and lakes, top class race management and on-water umpiring, development of the outstanding B2B VIP experience that has been at the heart of the event since the beginning, and a bigger than ever entertainment package for spectators on the water and on shore including our Sailing Rocks gigs, the Extreme Sailing Series will be going up a level. We have plans in place to expand the TV production and distribution, growing both the news service and the successful worldwide TV series, as well as the online content. We plan to expand the presence of other classes as warm-up acts, to both race and show-off, like the Moth dinghies and windsurfers this year.”
With strong demand, and a 12-boat limit in place for 2011, a Preliminary Notice of Race is published today with a pre-entry procedure. Whilst there is an encouraging amount of new team potential, existing teams that have helped grow the circuit will be given priority should the limit be reached. Other evolutions in the rules are expected to ensure that the team budgets remain under tight control, in the value-for-money commercially funded circuit.
The Notice of Race will be published in full by 31 October following the final 2010 event in Almeria, Spain, at which point the full entry procedure will open.
“We have invested heavily in this event since 2007 with good reason. It offers an exceptional return on investment to all stakeholders, in particular, for the ever-improving quality brands that we already have as team sponsors. We shall be announcing some excellent new partnerships at venue, event and team level in the coming months,” confirmed Turner.
