Volvo Ocean Race, l’evento farà tappa anche a Lorient

[singlepic id=5222 w=300 h=204 float=left] Volvo Ocean Race – Alicante – La Francia torna ad ospitare la Volvo Ocean Race e sarà Lorient, la località sulla costa bretone ad accogliere la regata nell’estate del 2012. Penultima sede di tappa dell’evento, che partirà dal porto spagnolo di Alicante nell’autunno 2011, Lorient succederà nell’albo storico a La Rochelle che accolse il giro del mondo nel 1997-98 e nel 2001-02, e si è assicurata un ruolo anche per la successiva edizione 2014-15.
L’annuncio segue quello di Alicante, come località dello start, di Cape Town come prima tappa e di Lisbona da cui i velisti della VOR partiranno per raggiungere proprio Lorient, a circa 700 miglia di distanza.
“Siamo felicissimi di avere una forte presenza francese nella regata – ha dichiarato il CEO Knut Frostad – Ci eravamo posti da tempo l’obiettivo di creare nuovo interesse per questo evento classico da parte dei francesi e siamo soddisfatti di aver raggiunto un accordo con la città di Lorient come sede di tappa per due edizioni consecutive”.
Nel corso degli anni la Francia ha partecipato con ben 21 team, una presenza fissa dalla prima, storica, edizione del 1973-74 fino alla sesta regata nel 1993-94 in cui La Poste si classificò al terzo posto. L’Esprit d’Equipe, con skipper Lionel Péan, fu il vincitore assoluto nel 1985-86 e ammonta alla ragguardevole cifra di 289 il numero velisti francesi che hanno iscritto il loro nome nelle dieci edizioni fin qui disputate.
“Negli ultimi 10 anni, Lorient ha trasformato quella che era la base dei sottomarini in un polo europeo per la vela con un villaggio completamente dedicato alle imprese della nautica. E’ qui che sono stati costruiti i trimarani giganti, Banque Populaire V e Groupama 3 e sempre qui è attivo un centro per la navigazione oceanica con circa 50 team, fra cui molti famosissimi solitari francesi – Ha detto nel corso della presentazione Norbert Métairie, sindaco di Lorient e presidente del consiglio Cap l’Orient – Oggi siamo particolarmente felici di aver dimostrato che Lorient è il palcoscenico perfetto per ospitare eventi internazionali, che di sicuro genereranno benefici significativi come, appunto, la Volvo Ocean Race”.
Lorient si situa nel cuore della “sailing valley” transalpina e ospita anche la Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly un sito dedicato allo sporti della vela e che porta il nome dell’amatissimo skipper francese che partecipò ben quattro volte alla Whitbread che poi sarebbe diventata la Volvo Ocean Race: nel 1973-74 con Pen Duick VI, nel 1981-82 su Euromarché, 1985-86 su Côte d’Or e nel 1993-94 su La Poste. Durante lo stopover di Lorient il cuore del villaggio sarà proprio rappresentato dalla Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly.
Groupama 3, il team dello skipper Franck Cammas, che attualmente sta correndo per il Jules Verne Trophy – il record assoluto di circumnavigazione a vela senza limiti di equipaggio e di imbarcazione – ha la sua base operativa a Lorient ed è già confermato fra i partecipanti delle prossime due edizioni.
Il prossimo porto europeo sede di tappa verrà reso noto a breve.
La Volvo Ocean Race ha debuttato nel 1973 ed è unanimemente considerata la più importante regata offshore in equipaggio. La barca, il VOR 70, è portata da velisti professionisti che navigano intorno al mondo con i venti predominanti.
VOLVO OCEAN RACE, LORIENT SECURES TWO-RACE DEAL
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] France returns to host the Volvo Ocean Race from Lorient, in Brittany on the northwest coast of France, in the summer of 2012. Lorient will be the penultimate stopover in the race, which starts from Alicante, Spain in the autumn of 2011. Like La Rochelle before it (1997-98 and 2001-02), Lorient will also host a stopover in 2014-15 edition of the race.
The announcement of Lorient follows that of start port Alicante, and Cape Town and Lisbon as host ports. Lisbon in Portugal will play host to the start of the leg to Lorient, which is around 700 nm.
“We are extremely pleased to have a strong French presence in the race – said Volvo Ocean Race CEO, Knut Frostad – It has long been our goal to reignite the passion of this classic event among the French people and we are delighted to have reached an agreement with the city of Lorient to host the event for two consecutives races”.
France has fielded 21 entries in the race, taking part in every race from 1973-74 up until the sixth race in 1993-94 in which La Poste finished third. L’Esprit d’Equipe, skippered by Lionel Péan, was the overall winner in 1985-86 and 289 French sailors have taken part in the previous 10 races.
“Over the last 10 years, Lorient has transformed its submarine base into European-wide sailing cluster hosting a business centre to yachting activities. It is where the maxi trimarans Banque Populaire V and Groupama 3 were built. It also has an offshore sailing centre of about 50 teams, including France’s most famous skippers” according to Norbert Métairie, Mayor of Lorient and President of Cap l’Orient Council.
“Today we are overwhelmingly pleased to have demonstrated that Lorient is a perfect site to host international events such as the Volvo Ocean Race, which will undoubtedly yield significant benefits” he added.
During the stopover in Lorient, the Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly, a complex dedicated to modern sailing races and bearing the name of the French skipper who sailed in The Whitbread four times (1973-74 Pen Duick VI, 1981-82 Euromarché, 1985-86 Côte d’Or and 1993-94 on La Poste), will be situated right in the centre of the race village.
Groupama 3, skippered by Franck Cammas, who is currently taking on the Jules Verne Trophy – a prize for the fastest circumnavigation of the world by any type of yacht with no restrictions on the size of the crew – has Lorient as its home base and will be France’s entry in the next two races.
The next European port will be announced shortly.
The Volvo Ocean Race traces its origins back to 1973 and is the world’s premier offshore sailing race. The Volvo Open 70 racing boat is sailed by professional athletes, who race around the world with the prevailing winds.
