[singlepic id=3988 w=204 h=300 float=left]RORC Caribbean 600 – Antigua – DSK Pioneer Investments – Onboard report – 00.54 UTC – 17°05.8377 N, 62°31.0509 W – Sono ormai passate otto ore dalla partenza del RORC Caribbean 600 e DSK Pioneer Investments scivola veloce a una manciata di miglia dall’imponente sagoma di Nevis. Nemmeno il buio, sostituitosi con lento procedere ai caldi colori di un tramonto indimenticabile, puo’ nascondere il massiccio profilo di quest’isola che, localizzata a nordovest di Antigua, rappresenta la seconda boa di un percorso unico nel suo genere.
Prima di lasciarci Nevis alle spalle, e di guardare avanti verso Saba prima e St Martin poi, abbiamo navigato lungo la costa sud di Antigua e doppiato la boa di Barbuda una mezz’ora dopo Beau Geste, balzato al comando sino dagli attimi seguenti il via. Quello della boa North Sails e’ stato un passaggio illuminato dal sole pomeridiano e accarezzato da una brezza da sudest sui 10-12 nodi che, con l’avanzare del giorno, ha oscillato tra i 110° e i 150°, obbligando il nostro equipaggio a numerosi cambi di vele.
Un’attivita’ quasi incessante, che ha inciso sul normale alternarsi dei turni, interrotti anche per motivi “d’interesse culturale”, come l’avvistamento di tre balene, comparse meno di mezzo miglio davanti a noi e svanite nelle cristalline acque del Mar dei Caraibi nel solco creato dalla nostra scia.
Ora che l’oscurita’ ci ha nascosto le luci di Beau Geste, rendendo impossibile tenere traccia dei suoi movimenti, l’attenzione si divide tra il far camminare la barca al massimo e il controllo del Tripp 75 Bella Pita che, sin dal via, si e’ dimostrato avversario particolarmente ostico.
Le ultime carte meteo annunciano una nuova rotazione verso sudest della brezza e un leggero rinforzo che dovrebbe agevolare il nostro avanzare verso la fine di questa avventura sino al tardo pomeriggio di domani. Se le previsioni saranno rispettate, la lunga discesa da St. Martin a Guadaloupe si trasformera’ in una bolina di quasi 150 miglia che in termini prestazionali dovrebbe premiare le barche piu’ lunghe al galleggiamento.

RORC CARIBBEAN 600, CARIBBEAN EMOTIONS
[RORC Caribbean 600, Press Release] As the sunsets over the Caribbean, the competitors in the RORC Caribbean 600 are preparing for their first night at sea. At 1700 local time, the leading boats had rounded the North Sails mark off Barbuda and were power reaching west towards the sunset under spinnaker. It doesn’t get a lot better than that!
Setting an incredible pace are John Burnie and his crew on ORMA 60, Region Guadeloupe. “ We are around the North Sails mark power reaching to Nevis, the speedo has barely dropped below 22 knots since we left Barbuda”. Explained navigator, Nick Lykiardopulo.
In IRC Class Super Zero, Karl Kwok’s Beau Geste is setting the pace, well clear of the North Sails mark and heading to Nevis at a cracking pace. Richard Oland’s Southern Cross 52, Vela Veloce is second in class, on handicap but on the water the Canadian boat is having a close battle with Danilo Salsi’s Swan 90, DSK Pioneer Investments. The two yachts were literally bow-to-bow at the North Sails mark. Third on handicap is James Grundy’s Tripp 75, Bella Pita.
In IRC Class Zero, Sir Geoffrey Mulcahy’s Swan 56, Noonmark VI is the early class leader. Behind them, Ondeck’s Farr 65, Spirit of Minerva is second in class but winning the private battle with two other Farr 65s. Spirit of Isis, crewed by Lloyds Yacht Club are in third and the Blesma crew are not far behind.
IRC Class One has a clear leader, after a cracking start Marc Glimcher’s J-122, Catapult is in command. Just ten miles from the North Sails mark they are well ahead of the other Class One boats and at this very early stage are third on handicap for the entire fleet.
As the crews get ready for the nightwatch, there will be no need to reach for the wet weather gear, the air temperature is still in the high twenties, they will be hoping that the wind keeps up as well.
