America’s Cup, Alinghi inizia ad allenarsi a Ras al Khaimah

[singlepic id=4358 w=300 h=204 float=left]America’s Cup – Ras al Khaimah – Alinghi, defender 33a America’s Cup, ha preso questa mattina il largo dall’isola di Al Hamra base dell’ America’s Cup e ha iniziato il suo primo giorno di allenamento a Ras Al Khaimah negli Emirati Arabi Uniti.

“Le condizioni sono ideali per queste barche – ha commentato Brad Butterworth – La brezza è salita esattamente come speravamo e questo ci consentirà di navigare sei giorni alla settimana. Non potevamo sperare di meglio in vista degli obiettivi che vogliamo raggiungere”.

Il maxi catamarano è arrivato negli Emirati dall’Europa il 30 Settembre dopo un viaggio di 4.400 miglia durato dodici giorni, da quel giorno in poi la barca è stata scaricata, riarmata e preparata per la sessione di quattro mesi di allenamento in vista della prima regata della 33a America’s Cup a Febbraio del 2010.

“Voglio ringraziare Ras Al Khaimah, tutti gli Emirati, sua Altezza Reale Sheikh Saud, lo Sceicco Omar e il Massaad tra tutti. Questa è una località fantastica per l’America’s Cup. I lavori sono in corso ma quello che è stato fatto fino ad ora fa capire che gli Emirati non sono secondi a nessuno. E’ un onore e un piacere essere qui e non vedo l’ora di cominciare a navigare” ha dichiarato Ernesto Bertarelli, presidente del team di Alinghi, durante la conferenza stampa di sabato all’Al Hamra Village.

Bertarelli ha poi continuato: “Alcune delle cose che ho sentito da parte di BMW Oracle Racing sembrano essere il promo di un film di Hollywood. Mi chiedo se loro possano davvero ignorare il fatto che noi, come peraltro il resto del mondo, siamo a conoscenza del fatto che il 40% del mercato del petrolio passa attraverso lo Stretto di Hormuz e che queste materie prime hanno consentito negli ultimi dieci anni la crescita esponenziale da ogni punto di vista, rispetto a quanto accade in tutto il mondo, di questa regione. Se lo Stretto o questa area avessero avuto problemi di sicurezza ce ne saremmo accorti. Così io dico: avanti BMW Oracle Racing, Larry Ellison, Russell Coutts e Tom Ehman, cercate di essere realistici e venite a regatare. Basta inventare scuse per il gusto di farlo”.

I preparativi per l’America’s Cup continuano a pieno ritmo, sia sull’isola di Al Hamra, che ospita le basi dei team, sia presso l’Al Hamra Village dove i team e i visitatori dell’America’s Cup saranno ospitati nei prossimi mesi. Le infrastrutture sono state create appositamente per l’evento, grazie a Ras Al Khaimah e al Dr. Khater Massaad, Consigliere dello Sceicco Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, successore al trono e suo vice di Ras Al Khaimah, il cui sostegno è stato incalcolabile: “ Siamo orgogliosi di ospitare un evento sportivo di fama mondiale e diamo il benvenuto ad Alinghi a braccia aperte – ha dichiarato il Dr. Massaad – speriamo solo di poter accogliere presto anche BMW Oracle Racing, il challenger, in modo da poter completare la loro base sull’isola di Al Hamra costruita appositamente per l’America’s Cup. Il governo di Ras Al Khaimah e gli Emirati Arabi Uniti garantiscono la sicurezza ad entrambi i team durante i preparativi e durante la Coppa”.

Grant Simmer, coordinatore del team dei progettisti, è stato sul posto sin dall’inizio dei lavori ed è affascinato dalla rapidità con cui procedono: “ La differenza tra quando siamo arrivati qui e adesso è fantastica. Il cambiamento da quando a Ras Al Khaimah sono cominciati i lavori è incalcolabile e guardiamo al 2010 per un’ America’s Cup di successo”.

Alinghi inizia ora il programma di allenamento che continuerà per il resto dell’anno in previsione della sfida a Febbraio 2010.

AMERICA’S CUP, ALINGHI BEGINS TRAINING IN RAS AL KHAIMAH
[Source Alinghi] Alinghi, the 33rd America’s Cup defender, cast off from the America’s Cup Island of Al Hamra this morning and set sail for its first training day in Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates.

“The conditions are ideal here for these boats – said Brad Butterworth, Alinghi team skipper – Exactly the building sea breeze that we hoped for which means we can sail as much as six days a week; it couldn’t be better for what we are trying to achieve”.

The giant catamaran Alinghi 5 arrived in the Emirates from Europe on 30 September after a 12 day, 4,400nm voyage and since then the team has relocated, reassembled the boat and prepared it for the four-month training session ahead of the first race of the 33rd America’s Cup in February 2010.

“I would like to thank Ras Al Khaimah, the United Arab Emirates, his Highness Sheikh Saud, his Highness Sheikh Omar and Dr Massaad among many others. This is a fantastic venue for the America’s Cup. It is work in progress, but what has been achieved so far is second to none. It’s an honour and a pleasure to be here and I can’t wait to get sailing – said Ernesto Bertarelli, Alinghi team president, at a press conference in Al Hamra Village on Saturday – Some of the things I see from BMW Oracle Racing read like the trailer of a Hollywood movie, do they really think we and the rest of the world ignore the fact that 40% of the world oil traffic goes through the Strait of Hormuz and as many goods are coming in to provide for what is the fastest growing region in the world over the last 10 years? If the Strait or this area had any security issues, we would know about it. So I say: Come on BMW Oracle Racing, Larry Ellison, Russell Coutts and Tom Ehman; let’s get real and let’s get sailing. Stop inventing things for the sake of it”.

Preparations for the America’s Cup continue apace, both on Al Hamra Island, home to the team bases, and within Al Hamra Village where the teams and America’s Cup visitors will be accommodated over the next few months. The infrastructure is tailor-made for the event, courtesy of Ras Al Khaimah and Dr Khater Massaad, Advisor to H.H. Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, whose support has been invaluable: “We are proud to host such a world-acclaimed sporting event and welcome Alinghi with open arms – said Dr Massaad – We just hope to be able to welcome BMW Oracle Racing, the challenger, soon in order to finalise preparations at their base on Al Hamra America’s Cup Island. The government of Ras Al Khaimah and the UAE guarantee the security of both teams in the lead up and during the Cup,” he declared.

Grant Simmer, Alinghi’s design team coordinator, has been on site during the early preparations and is delighted at the speed that work has progressed: “The difference between when we arrived here and now is amazing. The support from everyone involved in Ras Al Khaimah has been incomparable and we look forward to a successful America’s Cup Match in February 2010”.

Alinghi will now settle in to a training schedule towards the America’s Cup Match.
