Audi MedCup – Cascais – Nel terzo giorno di regate del Trofeo del Portogallo-Cascais, Emirates Team New Zealand completa la rimonta iniziata ieri conquistando il primo posto in classifica ai danni di Team Origin 1851, grazie a un primo e un secondo posto nelle regate di oggi. Per il team di Dean Barker, 26 punti in classifica, sono già tre le vittorie. Il sorpasso sul team inglese, capace di vincere la prima regata di oggi proprio davanti ai Kiwi (per Team Origin 1851 è il primo successo in assoluto nel Circuito Audi MedCup), si è concretizzato in gara 2, con le barche impegnate a girare la prima boa di bolina: Team Origin 1851, in seconda posizione dietro a Emirates Team New Zealand, osa troppo virando sulla prua di Synergy, incappando così in una penalità che fa scivolare Ben Ainslie e compagni in coda al gruppo. A nulla valgono i tentativi di rimonta degli inglesi, che chiudono al settimo posto regalando la prima posizione ai Kiwi. Sono tre, ora, i punti di svantaggio di Team Origin 1851.

Ma mentre Emirates Team New Zealand e Team Origin 1851 si battono per il primato, il team russo di Synergy, al terzo posto del Trofeo del Portogallo-Cascais, continua a far parlar di sé grazie alle ottime prestazioni in gara. La barca con a bordo il navigatore italiano Francesco Mongelli, ha infatti conquistato oggi un ottimo terzo posto in gara 2, con l’ottavo posto nella prima prova frutto solo della sfortunata rottura dello spinnaker a metà prova, quando il team si trovava nelle prime posizioni. Quarta posizione in classifica, a 36 punti, per Artemis, con Paul Cayard al timone. Dopo il settimo posto nella prima regata, buona prova del team svedese in gara 2, chiusa al secondo posto. Una prestazione incoraggiante che permette ad Artemis di rimanere nella scia dei primi tre. All’insegna del 5, invece, la giornata di Audi A1 powered by All4One: con i due quinti posti in regata ottenuti oggi, il team di Jochen Schuemann consolida la quinta posizione, a 37 punti, al Trofeo del Portogallo-Cascais.
I big che deludono
Solo un sesto posto in classifica, invece, per Quantum Racing, fermo a 43 punti. Il team statunitense è stato certamente penalizzato negli ultimi due giorni di regate dall’assenza del proprio leader, il timoniere Terry Hutchinson. Lo skipper americano, a causa dell’incidente di ieri (è stato colpito alla testa dal boma), è stato infatti costretto a saltare anche le gare di oggi, lasciando la barra al tattico Adrian Stead. L’inglese, che non timonava in regate ufficiali dal 2005, non è riuscito oggi ad andare oltre a un ottavo e un nono posto. Inspiegabile, invece, le prestazioni qui a Cascais degli argentini di Matador. Il team, che nel 2009 si è piazzato al secondo posto nel circuito, vincendo il mondiale a Palma di Maiorca, si trova ora in nona posizione, a ben 21 lunghezze da Emirates Team New Zealand. Oggi, l’equipaggio con Francesco Bruni alla tattica, è stato squalificato in gara 1 per un incrocio con Bigamist, portando a casa solo un sesto posto in gara 2. Il team dovrà dunque cercare di riprendersi al più presto per non compromettere l’intero Circuito.
Alti e bassi per Luna Rossa
Ancora una giornata altalenante per il team italiano, che porta a casa un ottimo terzo posto in rimonta in gara 1, ma chiude solo nono nella seconda regata, complice la penalità per partenza anticipata che ha compromesso la gara. Il team di Patrizio Bertelli è ora all’ottavo posto della classifica del Trofeo del Portogallo-Cascais, con 45 punti.
Nella GP42 Series allungo di Puerto Calero
Con una vittoria e due secondi posti nelle regate di oggi, Puerto Calero si porta a 7 punti aumentando così il vantaggio in testa alla classifica. Sono quattro, ora, i punti di distacco dai secondi classificati, i connazionali di Madrid-Caser Seguros. 3,2,1 lo score della barca timonata da Paolo Cian, che ha conquistato oggi la sua prima vittoria con gli spagnoli. Terza posizione, a 14 punti, per Iberdrola (1-3-3 oggi). Il quarto posto, con 20 punti, è di Peninsula Petroleum, che precede l’italiana Airisessential, quinta a 24 punti.
Adesso la costiera
Domani, per la TP52 Series, sarà il momento della regata costiera. E fra le condizioni meteo e la bellezza della costa portoghese, è facile attendersi una regata dalle grandi emozioni. AUDI MEDCUP, CHAMPIONS IN THE LEAD
[Audi MedCup Press Release] Emirates Team New Zealand lead the Portugal Trophy, Cascais after posting a strong second and first place from the two TP52 races today.
But for an error by Team Origin which required them to take a penalty turn early in the second race, the emerging duel between the Kiwi Audi MedCup champions and the British team might be even closer.
Conditions were ideal for the third day of racing for the 11 strong TP52 fleet, 16-22 knots of breeze and two good tests proved enjoyable tests for crews through the fleet. As the breeze peaked during the both races, several gennaker sails were shredded, a tough punishment for small mistakes, and consistency was never easily achieved.
Since their faltering opening day, when they scored a sixth and 11th, languishing at the back of the pack at the finish of Race 2, Emirates Team New Zealand are back to something close to their best. Now they have won three of the last five starts and lead Team Origin by three points as the TP52 Series approaches tomorrow’s Coastal Race.
With 2008 champions Quantum Racing remaining slightly compromised in the absence again today of skipper-helm Terry Hutchinson, who was still under final observation after taking a knock on the head before yesterday, Emirates Team New Zealand have found themselves an adversary very close to their level in Team Origin who are still only on Day 3 of their TP52 racing experience.
Adrian Stead took the helm of Quantum Racing again today but, according to the Quantum Racing team, Hutchinson should be back on board for tomorrow’s coastal race.
Team Orgin won the first race and were serious contenders in the second heat of the day, until they had to take a penalty for infringing Jochen Schuemann and the crew of Audi A1 powered by All4One near the top mark. But the British team, which has a trio of gold medallists, Ben Ainslie on the helm, Iain Percy as tactician and Andrew Simpson as strategist, forming their afterguard has otherwise been consistently strong starting and nailing the vital windshifts. Percy spoke yesterday of not putting themselves in potentially expensive positions, and so they will draw important conclusions from their de-brief today.
The Russian team on Synergy, with Karol Jablonski as helm and Rod Dawson as tactician, have been impressive with their regular results – third in the second race today – keeps them two points ahead of Torbjorn Tornqvist’s Artemis which paired a second to a seventh today.
GP42 Series: Puerto Calero extends their lead
The reigning Audi MedCup champions are showing themselves as the team to beat, as the Canarias-based Puerto Calero team extended their lead in the GP42 Series on impressive scores of 2-1-2 in the three races sailed today. Their consistency has put them in a 4-point lead over their B&C-designed sistership, Madrid–Caser Seguros, who finally put a win of their own on the scoreboard for the first time today.
“It was a tough day, very windy and at times shifty,” said Puerto Calero helmsman Jose Maria Ponce, “but we sail pretty well in these conditions, and the team did a great job of making very few errors.”
Windy indeed: the brisk northwest breeze today topped 22 knots, and seas built up to 2 metres, making upwind sailing a jarring ride at times but downwind an absolute blast, with all boats surfing at high speed on the 8-mile courses. Nonetheless, the teams are aware of the chess game chase for points at this halfway point in the competition.
