Louis Vuitton Trophy – Nizza – Vittorie, sconfitte, amarezza e scherzi del vento: il primo Round Robin del Louis Vuitton Trophy – Nice Côte d’Azur, inizia alla grande, sebbene si siano corsi solo tre match (di cui uno annullato). Smentendo le previsioni di ieri, che parlavano di vento sostenuto per le prime ore del pomeriggio, l’aria si è mantenuta intorno ai 6-10 nodi passando da nordovest a sudovest, con momenti di calo che hanno costretto il Comitato a posticipare qualche partenza, ad effettuare dei cambi di percorso e a cancellare una regata.

A Ben Ainslie e TeamOrigin l’onore di alzare il sipario sull’evento con una bella vittoria sull’equipaggio russo di Synergy, ma gli applausi vanno tutti ad Azzurra, che si è vista ‘strappare’ una meritatissima e schiacciante vittoria su BMW Oracle Racing (Match 3) per aver ‘sforato’ di 2 minuti il tempo limite previsto per lato. 

Enorme la delusione dell’equipaggio italiano, che però può ritenersi più che soddisfatto del suo esordio. Il team tricolore ha dimostrato di essere un avversario temibile e molto ben preparato.

“Certo, ci sarebbe piaciuto avere il punto – dice il tattico Tommaso Chieffi – ma in regata è così, sono cose che succedono. Francesco è stato bravissimo in partenza nonostante fossimo sfavoriti, la tattica è stata azzeccata, le manovre anche. Aspettiamo di incontrare di nuovo BMW Oracle Racing”.

Poco da raccontare, invece, sul secondo match del giorno, che ha visto Emirates Team New Zealand imporsi senza grosse difficoltà su TFS Pages Jaunes.

A terra, indifferente al cielo grigio e alla pioggia, il pubblico è arrivato numeroso al Villaggio Regate, un po’ per fare acquisti di gadget e uniformi, un po’ per incontrare i velisti in banchina e ‘toccare con mano’ l’atmosfera dell’evento.

La seconda giornata del RR1 del Louis Vuitton Trophy – Nice Côte d’Azur, continua domani, domenica 8 novembre con i seguenti match nel seguente ordine:

LOUIS VUITTON TROPHY, EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND E TEAM ORIGIN GAIN FIRST WINS
[Louis Vuitton Trophy Press Release] Half of the opening day’s scheduled matches at the Louis Vuitton Trophy Nice Côte d’Azur were completed in conditions that challenged race officials and tended to favour the leading yachts.

Emirates Team New Zealand and Team Origin share the top spot on the leaderboard after scoring triumphs in light and shifty winds. Team New Zealand defeated TFS – Pages Jaunes by 59 seconds and Team Origin won by 1 minute, 36 seconds over Russia Synergy.

The wind was light and shifty all day as an offshore breeze battled a gradient wind. It ranged in strength between 3 and 10 knots while shifting between the southwest and north/northwest.

Match 1: Team Origin d. Russia Synergy, 59 seconds
The key moment in the match came in the pre-start when Team Origin helmsman Ben Ainslie drew a penalty on Russia Synergy helmsman Karol Jablonski. Russia Synergy was penalized for not responding to a luff from Team Origin when both boats were overlapped. The on-water umpires made it a red-flag penalty because Russia Synergy got a controlling position from the incident. Russia Synergy had to perform its 270-degree penalty turn once on the racecourse, which allowed Team Origin to gain control of the match. Team Origin stretched its lead to more than 4 minutes at the third mark rounding and then had to sweat out the victory due to a 60-degree windshift near the finish.

Match 2: Emirates Team New Zealand d. TFS – Pages Jaunes, 1m:36s
A spirited pre-start resulted in a split tack start with Emirates Team New Zealand starting on starboard tack and TFS – Pages Jaunes on port tack. Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker held control of the match throughout, rarely giving his counterpart on TFS – Pages Jaunes, Bertrand Pacé, a chance to come back. Team New Zealand’s biggest lead was 1 minute, 39 seconds at the leeward gate.
